  1. They eat snakes. Is that reason enough? Rob
  2. Don't know. Got another idea if they eventually do allow us to "remove" herons from Lake Taneycomo. We call it Water Turkey and sell it as a delicasy to upper class folk on the East or West coast. That or offer it as an alternative to felines in Chinese neighborhoods/restaurants. Rob
  3. Yes, but how do we know which guest to ban if one posts explicit material? There isn't any direct incriminating evidence. Rob
  4. I use long, thin floats that lay on their sides, but stand up when a fish picks the bait up. It helps alot when panfish get finnicky after a coldfront. never thought about tryin the concept for trout. Main thing, I will second the fact that IT DOES WORK. Rob
  5. If I am correct, this is what I'm getting- Amphipods: Scuds Isopods: ?Sowbugs? Gammarus: ?#14 Genus of clear-bodied scuds? What to fish with in LT: #14-#16 "thing" with lots of legs and a hard, shiny back. Sound right to everyone else? Rob
  6. They might have great wing feathers for biots n such. The crest feathers could be used for tying streamers. They might even have hackle, herl, or soft hackles. That or just use the whole bird for a monster brown. Rob
  7. If you want something, try Paul's Bait & Tackle on Chippewa. They have almost everything that you could possibly imagine, from Fly Materials to Muskie Baits to Snagging Equipment to Live Bait. They may not have the best prices, but they will most likely have it. Rob
  8. GF: It wouldnt get boring, they keep recruiting new models. The only thing better is if you got paid by the hour and not by # of fish you caught. Just think, a bad day gets you just as much $$$$ as your best day could. Only fish that they might put a bounty on are the Bighead and Silver carp because of damage to fisheries and injuries to boaters. The only fish that these species havent seem to hurt are the catfish. I fish on the Kaskaskia River, and the catfish just keep getting bigger. Rob
  9. Whats it supposed to imitate? Or does that not really matter if the fish are hitting it? Rob
  10. It's for your own good (and your family's, if you have one). Rob
  11. Where do you fish in the Niangua? I tried early morning along the Bennett Springs access with no luck. I then went back to the park and caught 30 "stupid" fish. I'm just curious about location and techniques for the browns. Rob
  12. $35. This doesn't include a $7 trout stamp. Rob
  13. GF: Just add lemon. Lots of lemon. Quillback: Saw the same story. Hey, if people can make a living fishing, all power too them. Wonder how pikeminnow taste? Rob
  14. Maybe I should go there; try to improve my large fish fighting abilities. I've broken off on some really big fish this year. Rob
  15. Ever get to fish the Upper Lake? They don't let people fish it because it cost too much to insure with its steep banks to the water. Enormous flatheads in it, though. Rob
  16. The two fly rig is legal in all zones of Bennett, I just have problems using it in deeper water, like Zone 1. The legality of the matter comes from a Conservation officer. Rob Whoops, no flies legal in Zone 3. My mistake. Rob
  17. I got a hit from one that might have gone 15", but it got off before I got it in. Real shame, they fight so well in the faster water. Rob
  18. Was down there for a few hours last weekend. Had about 15 hits on the humpy, only landed 3 of them. Zebra midges accounted for the other 3 fish I caught. EXTREMELY low strike-to-land %age this trip. Probably below 10%. Rob
  19. The only birds that I have ever seen eat a pre-dead something is a buzzard (no native vultures, there actually is a difference) and a bald eagle. If you have ever seen the "Majestic Eagle" plucking at dead carp in dried-up borrow-pits, then you know that they are just a glorified buzzard. The baby woodies were wearing collars that were fitted loose and with elastic, so that they had room to grow in them. Still can't find the article on it. Oh yeah, it's legal to hunt mergansers during regular duck season, at least on this side of the Mississip'. I've been after a hooded merganser for a couple years now. Gotten close, but no mounter yet. GF: The reason that we can't hunt herons is because PETA doesn't want us "murdering another friend of the forest." They have more say in the government than I will ever admit. That and it's a shame and a waste to kill something that you won't (or can't) eat. Maybe we could ship the herons to Mexico; they might eat herons down there. Market it as "the big blue chicken" (el grande pollo azul!) . Just my two cents. Rob
  20. !!! Where do I go to catch a fish with those kind of colors?! I tried the current river, but didnt land anything close to that color ways. Trying to pick a favorite, but I'm torn between the second from the top (full fish) and the 4th from the top (slashing fish). Rob
  21. A pellet gun has enough pop to down a heron. You just have to shoot it in the head. It's also quiet, so if no one sees you do it, no harm done, just more ducks and fish out there for us sportsmen. BTW, a nested pair of herons took 8 baby wood ducks with radio collars a few years ago. The IDNR found the 8 collars "whitewashed" in the nest. Rob
  22. Quills? As in feathers? Dressed marabou floats well, but I'm at a loss other than that. Rob
  23. There is no trophy water at Bennett: it is an "anything goes" area. The current river just below montauk is amazing, with small browns being the most common, then coming park escaped rainbows and then trophy fish right behind. Between the park and tan vat, there are a lot of trophy fish, but early morning/late evenings are best for fishing for these fish. Other than that, Montauk has a lot more stream available to fish, and the fish are very willing to take an ant pattern if presented right. Montauk over Bennett anytime, but I go trout fishing whenever I can. Rob
  24. Have you tried "starin' 'em down?" If you give the rude fishermen this real pissed off look like "I'd kick you're a$$ if I wanted to wade out there and ruin the fishing" It's worked for me before. What's worked for me at Bennett: Start fishing from the bank with small nymphs behind the guys who waded out an cut you off. They get pretty embarrassed when a kid that they cut off has a good limit fishing right behind their backs. Main point: Don't let a couple of jerks ruin the experience of fishing. Rob
  25. If you would actually try carp at a Monroe county fish fry, you would like it. Not as good as buffalo, but I like it better than Cod. Rob P.S.- I DO eat fish (catfish, river fish, panfish) on a regular basis, averaging every couple weeks.
