I've been gone for a couple years, so that makes sense. Should have known how old it was based on the amount of tackle hanging in the branches above it, but I was just itching to fish it and didn't think about it. And I hooked something I thought was a log, so I went in to try and free it up, then realized it was a fish once I kicked it with my boot. No clue what size, though. Probably a rainbow, based on where it was holding and the tight head shakes- browns generally have a wider, slower thrash. Wanted to go again today, but I just got done with homework and it gets dark too early right now. Guess I'll have to tie flies and plan on next week instead.

Thanks Phil! Nope, not Taney, since there are closer rivers to Rolla. I don't think I've fished Taney since I was 6 years old... Been meaning to fix that, just haven't had the chance. And it was odd that she didn't break off- the line was wrapped around her maxilla, thought that would have sheared it off for sure. As for the location, here's the link to the full album. Not much of a guessing game, but still fun.

Got a new personal best Sunday. 22", 14.5" girth, on 7x tippet. Thought you'd enjoy a couple pictures. http://imgur.com/8wT4fLz http://imgur.com/q3owm92
  4. Pitzen knot on any larger hook sizes (2 and up), or to swivels. It's all I ever use for bass fishing and throwing streamers. Smaller than that, just a clinch. I'll use a snell for up- or down-turned eyes when using live bait. A blood knot for trout leader-tipper connection seems to work best, despite the difficulty (double surgeon's kept breaking with 6x and 7x). And that's about it.
  5. Hunted this morning, lots of teal before LST. Had a pair of geese come over about 10 min before sunrise, they left unscathed. Teal wanted to mainly work elsewhere, but we scratched 1 when a group of 4 swung wide. We were covered with woodies, pintails, and other big ducks for most of the day. A black duck even made an appearance in the hole, so that was pretty neat. Not very successful as far as hunts go, but it was one of the better ones I've had.
  6. Glory daze, was that with a rental, or just a shuttle with your own watercraft? And I was hoping for an easy one day float with a lot of fishing.
  7. Finally getting around to floating the Big Piney next weekend, but can't decide what the better float would be. I'm looking at either Sand Shoals to Boiling Springs, or 6 Crossings to Ross. Going to use an outfitter, just haven't decided on one yet. Primarily a fishing float, but still a float trip, so swimming, lounging, and rope swings are very welcome. I plan on taking my fly rod and standard tackle. Plan is to drive down from Rolla early morning, float and do a lot of fishing, and then drive back to Rolla for the night. Does anyone have a suggestion for better fishing? Better floating?
  8. The duck blind is brushed, the hole is mowed, and water has started coming in. One month until teal open up. The goose blind, however, is inaccessible until the corn is picked. But that's alright, because there are fields to hunt until regular season. The groups are getting bigger, and the young are flying. Time to start scouting for honkers, because I'm ready to get hunting.
  9. Lot of small bluegill, lot of small bass, place is loaded with milfoil. Saw an older gent come in with 20 crappie one day fishing logs/trees out in the middle with minnows. Some redear, supposedly catfish, never seen them. Good luck to anyone trying it.
  10. Gonna be low and super clear, only 65cfs at Newburg. Lot of slow, sandy pools with occasional riffles. If you want fish here, focus on moving water. If you just want fish, go to the Current.
  11. A couple alligator snappers mixed in? And I like snakes well enough, but I don't mess with cottonmouths. Great pics, though, thanks for sharing.
  12. I would love to dive with sharks, just not bulls. They just seem a little meaner than the rest.
  13. It looks like it's a morning bite this time of year. Were you using minnows, or plastics?
  14. Update- turned a couple tarpon, but no takes, and just all around rough fishing. Ended with 8 small snook and a nice redfish on the new 8wt. Might head to the beach to look for snook in the morning.
  15. Going to Marco Island in the morning, staying through Friday. The finish on the rod cured in the car coming through Georgia. So... What should I fish for? What flies should I use? Have a tarpon guide for Monday morning, but the rest of the week is open. Tied up some clousers and deceivers, just need a suggestion on where to fish.
  16. Had you ever golfed there before, or just showed up wanting to fish?
  17. Thanks for the advice. Keep it coming! I'm also planning on scouting places to duck hunt this fall, as well. But no gun or decoys here yet. Checked out Longview spillway last night, understand what you mean by parking in a visible area- I stayed within sight of the vehicle at all times. But only one white bass to show. Planning on going somewhere else before I repeat that trip.
  18. Just moved from Southern Illinois to Overland Park, Kansas, and I'm completely out of my element. I'd really like to get into walleye, crappie, and hybrids. Have kayak, will travel. Friend of mine has a fishing boat, as well. Any suggestions? Not opposed to longer drives, or splitting boat gas if someone needs a new fishing buddy (hint, hint).
  19. Headed to Marco Island in late June, might have my 8wt finished by then. Worth taking it?
  20. Hey, I'll be less than two hours from Truman if you ever want to meet up to chase wipers and walleye. Nothing pulls like a wiper in open water, and I seriously miss it. It's a shame that Dynagy killed them off in Baldwin Lake- I had that figured out.
  21. No worries, I still had fun paddling around the river. And I did get my first sauger thanks to your advice. It's just been a while...
  22. I booked a trip to Florida, and I'll be chasing tarpon third week of June. The guide suggested I get my hands on a 12wt (or even 10) just to see how differently it behaves compared to an 8wt. I would probably bother Hargrove for an afternoon, but... I'll be moving to Kansas City on Friday, starting a new job Monday. So... does anyone in Kansas City have a tarpon rod I could throw for a bit? Any and all suggestions are welcome, and thanks in advance, as always.
  23. Thanks, Smalliebigs. Hope you guys tear them up on the meramec for me- I never figured it out.
  24. Hog Wally- that was me in the kayak last week. I'm the only one dumb enough to pale back upstream. I was throwing cranks way too deep, but I'm stubborn with my choices and stuck with the D22. The crawler on a float rig got bit more, but the half crawler on a 1/4oz yellow jighead got teeth marks a couple times. Oh well, I'm moving to Kansas City this week, so maybe I'll figure out lake walleye out there. Pretty close to Truman, too.
  25. I would say bluegill/longear hybrid (most likely) or a bluegill/pumpkinseed hybrid, depending on location. definitely a bluegill hybrid of some form.
