  1. Every time I try a jig for fall fishing I fall out of my boat.
  2. Rant on. I have an idea that could be beneficial. OAF Cards that we could give to fellow fisher persons. There need to be 2. One we give to the folks that are friendly and courteous. It would have the OAF Web Site on it. The second one would have a direct link to a page that explains river etiquette and lets them know they have been a jack *&^. Thoughts
  3. Never Never Never Ever take a Gun to a fishing pole fight. Even I know that
  4. Does Spidermans web glove/wrist thingy work when its wet? Did he get to use it to pull you through the shallows? Does it make all the fishing gear sticky? Fishing with Spiderman could have it advantages.
  5. Bass Slam is a contest so to speak that Bassmasters launched in 2008. It is kind of what you are doing only with fewer fish. BassMasters Bass Slam You may be able to get some help on locations from the guys who have made serious efforts to pull it off. Some of these guys have gone after all the species in 5 days. Do a search on the Bass Masters site for Bass Slam and it will bring up all the related stories.
  6. ixnay on the locationa that is a secret. Have you not read the other super secret where we fish thread. Sorry guys I couldn't help myself.
  7. WE HAVE OFFICIALLY REACHED LUDICROUS SPEED With this Thread. Not that I mind or anything
  8. This thread has everything. It is the all encompassing thread. It is obvious that we the posters suffer from some forms of phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder along with antisocial, borderline, histrionic or narcissistic personality disorders as well as avoidant, dependent, or obsessive-compulsive personality disorders. I wouldn't trade this mental institution for any other. Come on big 14
  9. Wading Vest Closeout 29.95 Not a bad deal if you need one.
  10. Just imagine the poor sap who googles any of the 7365 topics/directions this thread has taken. One confused soul let me tell ya.
  11. Cloudveil Crystal Creek Wading Pant On Steep & Cheap right now for 149.00 Normally 374.00 retail. Steep And Cheap
  12. If you have problem with he bail let me know. I'm on The Hill every Monday.
  13. They have the new X series. Same reel just a bit heavier and only 2 bearings. For those who like the Plueger President series reels. Gander Mountains house reel is a rebranded president. 10-15 bucks cheaper.
  14. I have both the US Reel 180 Series and the Arbor. I prefer the US Reel but not because the Arbor is a bad reel it is just to big. The smallest Arbor they make is a 30 series which is the same as the 240 series in the US Reel. I use the 180 US or 25 Series Plueger. My first Arbor had an issue as well. The Anti reverse did not work 90 percent of the time. I would have to rap it hard on the gunnel of my canoe flip the switch 7 or 8 times and pray. Very Frustrating Day. Dealer replaced it and the new one works great. I like both and the large spools really help. I have not found a reason to use the larger 30/240 series reels on any of the Secret rivers and creeks I fish. They are heavier & bulky. The 25/180 just have a better feel on my rods. I have never lost a large smallie (the ones I cant show pictures of) to reel failure. The 4LB Smallie in my avatar was caught on the 180 and 6lbs Fireline Crystal with a Flora Carbon leader on the Ouachita River just west of (what the haite am I doing) On some river in Arkansas.
  15. Ive never eaten my reel butter not sure I want to give that a try.
  16. Sad to say not US MADE just us engineered and owned. They come from the big crate carrying canoes of china. They are a good reel and I felt the same way. Simple solution would have been to bend them before they shipped them or just let the customer know what needs to be done. Show the stocking dealers the fix and let them do it. It is 15 second fix. Not sure if they have it worked out on the new batches or not. They work very well with my Loomis Habit SMR751S-SP,SMR752S-SP, SMR753S-SP love them all. I did buy a Temple Fork Outfitters spinning rod designed by Gary Loomis and it is a good rod. I just wish they would make them with Tennessee Handles. Very good 99.00 rod.
  17. Made the switch to US Reel XL180's a few years ago. Hated the 1st one I had because the bail was was hard to close. Sent it back to St Louis (darn Yankees) and they sent me a new one. It had the same issue. So I put it on the shelf and went back to my tried and true Plueger President 6725's. US Reel was at the trade show in Shreveport for the Bassmasters and I let them know how I felt about the reel and the bail etc. The fella gave me a new one and showed me what needed to be bent on the bail to fix it. I asked why I had to send the 1st one back if someone would have just told me what to do I could have done it. He said something about not sharing that info because it caused to much pressure on the staff or was that the fish or maybe the river. Long story short (unlike this thread) the XL180 reels are outstanding. The large spool makes for great casts. On these little creeks that we are not talking about I have plenty of control and can put my cast right where I want it. On the bigger rivers with the Honey Holes we are not talking about I can put it where I want it with out spooking the fishes. I have put them through plenty of abuse and they keep on working so I am happy.
  18. Let the good times roll. We have rain. We have rain. We have rain. The sky has done feld it has feld I told ya. Maybe this will get it to 10.
  19. A Border Collie named Frank. I did a very stupid thing when he was a puppy. I decided in to put my arkansan engineering degree to work by putting a tennis ball on the end of my rod and casting it as far as I could. Frank would dive in after it and follow it all the way back to the bank or dock. It was our little game, just for me and him or so I thought. He had other ideas. It was a game he could play with anyone who had a rod in their hand. He cam home on more than one occasion with a spinner bait or Rapala hanging out of his lip. Fishing tourneys were the worst. Needless to say our dock and several others that were close were off limits to the tourney fisherman. I have never heard so much cussing and laughing at the same time in my life. Tourney guys need to relax a little. If you ever get a Border Collie keep this in mind. They are by far smarter than we are. They tolerate our stupidity only because they cant verbalize the dumb things we do. Only when you get that stare from a Border Collie will you realize "what the hatie was I thinking" You walk away muttering under your breath that the dog knows more than you do. You know the dog would have never attempted to put the canoe in in the crook tree to wash it during a thunder storm and 50 mph winds. It had to be done it was full of fish slime. After you pick the canoe up off of you and rub the knot on your head the rain would have cleaned it. You will go in the house to find the dog and your wife with the same dumbfounded expressions not saying a word. Then and only then will you realize why you fish. You might also realize you would never trade the dog or your wife for anyone else. They have become accustomed to your idiot ways and they both tolerate them and who wants to change that.
  20. Depends on the factors involved. If the truck is moving over 60 MPH you could be in real trouble. Add to the the rotation of the earth and Gravity and, Well its just not a pretty picture. If its a seedless the effects are not nearly as harsh those seed can be sharp. They have also been known to put an eye out. That s why you have to have insurance to enter seed spitting contest. One thing is for sure it will be a Sticky Mess.
  21. 1. TV Remote Control = Carpel Tunnel & Broken TV Screens (Razorback Football) 2. Bourbon = Lots of dead oak trees & Lies 3. Cigars = Secondary Smoke & Lies 4. The Simpsons = Bart & Power Plants with green glowing stuff OK try again. As my Grand Father was so fond of saying "It's all about perspective" I love these discussions it wakes everyone up
  22. I think most folks here would tell you over coffee or an adult beverage. That in itself requires a face to face interaction. There is a certain level of trust that does not exist on a board. I have no issue inviting someone from the board to fish with me or even ask to go fishing with someone else. I can understand why folks don't give directions to their favorite spots.
  23. How do you get your chicken wings to stay extended like that? I cant get mine to do that.
  24. So does this mean that maybe there is a natural solution to the Otter problem. Bigfoot, Bears, Cougars, Mountain Lions & Chief One of them should be able to keep them in check.
  25. Ain't river fishing fun. What I enjoy about this site is folks passion and anal retentivness (is that a word) for the river and fish they go after. Pretty much everything has been covered in the responses above. I use 4 different boats for the river. Each type has its positives and negatives. Pontoon: I don't ever take it out of the bag anymore. For me they are just to cumbersome on moving water with rocks just below the surface. Dealing with the oars and rods and everything else was just a bit to overwhelming for me. Worked great in pools and relatively calm water. I seemed to spend more time bouncing off rocks and spinning down the river than I did fishing. I just don't think they are very versatile. Canoe: I have a 16 foot Mad River Explorer. Great all around boat. I use it for camping or when I take a second person. It makes my wife happy. She can sit up front and read or tan while I do the work in the back. It can handle all the camping gear you need for multi day trips. In most cases this is the boat I take to new water. I will use it over my other boats when I go to places I have never paddled. I turn the boat around and sit in the front seat and paddle solo. I can stand in it and it is also a very dry ride. SOT Kayak: I have a Perception 12.5 Caster. Great boat that I take during the summer to water I know and fish often. 45 lbs easy to handle. Class I & II rapids are no problem if you should run into them. I have used it on the Little Red & White when they are generating and it not a problem. I like using it in the summer because it is a wet ride. You tend to stay a bit cooler on this boat. Not a lot of room for gear if you plan on camping. It works fine if you use solo camping gear. When I bought mine 6 years ago it was a 1000.00 boat Gander Mountain has them for 500.00 now. Hybrid Kayak: I have a Native Watercraft Ultimate 14.5. It is part kayak & part canoe. It is quickly becoming my favorite boat. It is a tandem boat so you can take your wife but it can quickly be changed to a solo boat. It is roto molded plastic like a kayak but it is open like a canoe. Plenty of room for gear if you decide to camp. You can stand in it and fish. The seats are the best I have ever used and can be taken out and used as lawn chairs on the gravel bar when you stop for lunch. I have used it for one season. Its big test will come in October when we do our annual 10 day Buffalo Float. So far so good. The only downside to this boat is it can get wet in large rapids because the gunwales are lower than my canoe. I got a skirt for the bow which solved the problem. Having said all of that I would say you should look at renting a few boats and see which you are the most comfortable with on the rivers you want to float. I think you will find after you get a boat you will want to float a lot more water that now you don't even consider. Your options really open up when you float and fish. I started out with the same thoughts you have had. Wading had it limitations. Crowds have their issues. 10 years later I ended up with the boats above. The canoe is by far the most versatile and cost effective all around solution. Which ever you choose spend some time learning your boat and the river. Play in your boat and learn how it handles. Learn how to get back in or on the boat when it tips. You don't want to try and figure those things out when you are in water flowing at 15 mph or in water over your head. It will happen and you will get wet. Above all wear your PFD in water you are unfamiliar with. I admit I don't wear my PFD all the time. A majority of the rivers I float and fish are less than knee deep on 90 percent of the river. If you tip you just stand up no harm no foul. I would never go without it on water that is moving, either from generation or rain. Better safe than sorry. Good luck on picking a boat. It will change your perspective of river fishing forever.
