#10 or 8 olve mohair leech. You will indeed love Montauk. If you can plan to hit it off-peak you will like it even more (avoid thursday-sunday in the summer). If it was less popular and not a park, the fly-fishing only stretch of the river would likely be the hands-down best trout stream in the state. Don't bother with a guide until you want to head out of the park. The best way to find fish on the current in my opinion is to fish the mohair leech deep where the water has deeper strecthes and faster water. It's easy to walk past the fish on the river, but after searching this way, you get the feel of where fish hide, then you can try some other techniques...and be as quiet as you can, they see you coming a mile away. I haven't fished the little piney in years, but remember liking it. The upper meremac around cardiac hill is nice, but can be real hit or miss. Other than that Bennett springs is kind of blah in my opinion. If you want to get that far it's worth some time, but I'd just assume spend more time at Montauk.

I pretty much don't use line leader or tippet that isn't Rio. There's plenty of good stuff, but to me Rio is kind of assurance that I will like it. The tip on my 2 or 3 year old Grand still floats pretty high. Genarally it was a world of improvement in control over GPX on my 7'9" St. Croix LU.

Yep, early season brown stocking. I typically end up fishing more in the summer and I tend to catch 90%+ rainbows. I think the browns tend to get sluggish by the time I get there. A lot of people catch many more browns than I do on the current. I can't quite figure that one out... I consider a 15" brown on that river a trip making catch, so congrats. If you want to see what you can catch on the current check out the pictures on www.tightline.biz. Sam Potter's site.

It' not like the park in terms of "holes" and chances are, you won't see many of the fish before you catch them. Just fish anywhere and everywhere that looks good.

Yeah, I've been looking for a good go-to small-mouth fly, and this could do the trick.
-
But I'll definitely try one out where legal. - looks cool.

I understand the rubber part, but can't agree that an articulated fly (not flies - singular, not plural) has MULTIPLE hook points. I would like to hear a real clarification on that before anybody just claims it as legal. The dropper thing is about mutliple flies, this is not, it is not a short dropper, it is a hook TIED (the language used describing construction of A fly.) It is the same fly, so I would say it is not legal, but it's up to the guy writing the tickets I guess. If they would ever fix the language to mean what they want it to mean, the sillier parts of argument would go away and we could all just know - a lengthy minimum between tandem flies would be nice.

I'm no expert, but in my limited experience it's either great or I get skunked (or close to). Had luck with olive pms last year...about 9 rainbows caught between cardiac and where the Dry Fork comes in. I'd rather drive further and hit the current, but for a one-dayer I will be sticking with Cardiac...and it seems like the kind of river that you can get good at fishing if you spend enough time on it (just avoid the HORRIFIC canoe hatches).

I think a bare hook will do the trick on openning day. Just don't go expecting a real trout fishing experience. It'll be a circus, and there will be a ton of fish, and if you're into social fishing it might be fun - when (not if) somebody crowds and annoys the heck out of you, let it go and try to just enjoy. But go back on a weekday later on in the season for a more real fly fishing trip. And I would never step foot in the water without a few olive mohair leeches in my box.

Step 1.) tie dog to picnic table while packing up at Montauk Step 2.) friend unloads truck bed to make room, puts rod on same picnic table Step 3.) listen for crunch Step 4.) put no-fault warranty to good use

I think it's fly only. You can't allow bait or soft plastics and then expect released fish to survive.

I'm dying to know myself. Looks like it's only been wadeable for a little while now.

I can't say that I'm a strong supporter of McCain. Or even a strong supporter of all republicans. But I do realize that the progressives (liberals, leftists, most democrats) are looking at a progression towards something. Also, that progression is away from something. Given, forward motion is necessary, but it has to be towards the right things and away from the wrong things. I'm not sure that I can sit around and let far-left socialism be the thing we move away from be capitalistic small government democracy. If your associations tell anything about you, then it is pretty clear that Obama is essentially looking for that "new America," but not one that our founders would recognize, but one that he and the enilghtened ones see as We're in a time where suddenly "deregulation" is a dirty word - rather that the proper limited regulation. That's gonna open Obama's door for his big government involvment over-regulation. I'm not saying we'll see radical socialism in a 4 or 8 year period under the guy, but the road will be paved and the route will be set, and like Phil put it, it will be hard to undo. I shudder to imagine the supreme court of Obama's dreams...hopefully he'd only get a couple seats if elected. Let's not forget that the government is supposed to be a necessary evil, not the thing we all rely on for everything. "The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help." -Ronald Reagan

If they could only put him in the living room of a terrorist he'd look like are really bad guy. Oh wait, this election already has a guy like that. Chief...seriously, Rolling Stone? They couldn't even get the story straight on Led Zeppelin. You want to believe they've discovered the "real McCain?" You're crazy. You want to believe nonsense and even rant about it's truth, then you'll have to accept that Obama is a muslim, he's not a legal citizen, and he hates puppies.

Remember when gore and kerry were gonna be landslides? The media loves to cherry pick polls. It's an innocent looking way to sway a vote. Just wait for the "exit polls" on election day. "Hey, lets only talk to the guys with dem buttons and stickers on their shirts...maybe it will look like the dem is a big winner and keep the right wingers at home."

LAS VEGAS -- Nevada state authorities are raiding the Las Vegas headquarters of an organization that works to get low-income people to vote. A Nevada secretary of state's office spokesman said Tuesday that investigators are looking for evidence of voter fraud at the office of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, also called ACORN. No one was at the ACORN office when state agents arrived with a search warrant and began carting records and documents away. Secretary of State spokesman Bob Walsh says ACORN is accused of submitting multiple voter registrations with false and duplicate names. The raid comes two months after state and federal authorities formed a task force to pursue election-fraud allegations in Nevada. NOW, I'm not one to say that either side is more corrupt than the other. But, the voter fraud thing really does seem to be generally associated with far left groups...

The only real absolute in fly fishing is that...well, there are none...except that if you buy something with the name RIO on it, you will love it. It really depends on the rod, and your casting style, and what you want to do with it most of the time. If you have a good fly shop near, see if they can slap a real with some 5 and then a reel with some 6 on it, and cast both. I don't know much about the rod itself, but as a cortland, it's probably not a super fast rod, so you shouldn't NEED to over weight it to get a normal cast. If you go with a RIO Grand in a 5, the ~1/2 size weighting should make it cast pretty nicely. But then you get to kiss $60 goodbye...but it's the best on the market in my limited opinion. There are practically churches of thought around here on whether you should have slow vs. fast action and how to appropriatley select a line with the right taper, weight ect to do the best job.

Honestly, I think people are scared of her because that's what they've been told to be from day one. The word "scary" has been plastered on her by pretty much everybody on the left including most media outlets. What you're supposed to be scared of is what I'm really trying to figure out. If what she said regarding God's will to a church is the best you have, then i'm a little lost. I may disagree with her a little on interpretting God's will, but she does not seem to have a history of abusing that kind of idea for political gain. She's maybe a bit green, but does that really "scare" you? We have a great history of experienced politicians doing terrible jobs. I wouldn't say scared is a word for her. Concern is legitimate, but as far as what she stands for? I'll get on her side almost any day of the week.

At least in smaller than 20's, the Gamakatsu or however it's spelled, will break, bend, and tick you off to no end. JUNK. Usually you won't notice it until you start getting strikes on a dry and NEVER setting the hook. I think they're more of a big streamer/saltwater brand.

In St. Louis or KC?

I beg to differ...well, wikipedia does: "Mohair usually refers to a silk-like fabric or yarn made from the hair of the Angora goat.[1]" If the leech yarn used for mohair had some flash in it, you could use it and skip the whole dubbing loop thing. Even with the other stuff in the dubbing you have the same fly as a mohair leech, just slightly different body. I'm talking mainly about the phil rowly pictures. The big fat ones look like a differnt fly altogether.

If you do it right, you can get pretty good indirect heat with a weber - you're really limited to what can fit on half of the grill, and you have a pretty small fire. I usually do use the pan trick to help keep the direct heat off. I've pretty much only done ribs, and they don't take quite the time committment of a pulled pork. So, how long in the smoke, how long in the oven?
-
WHAT IF... you only had a Weber kettle and didn't feel like staying up all night stoking the stupid thing? I've seen recipes to smoke the meat in the kettle, and then finish in an oven wrapped in foil. I'm thinking this might be the most reasonable option. Oh and I'm planning on making a butt Saturday, so help quick
