  1. Thanks for the inputs. I ended up tying a royal trude, bi-visiable, and a stimulator. The stimulator might be the best fly I ever tied, regular or indicator. I'll give them a try and let you know how they worked. Here are a couple of replies: 3wt: This really may be the coolest idea for an indicator I've come across yet...I didn't tie the second loop so I wonder if it makes a difference. I'd say this PMX is pretty impressive...I don't think I'm ready to tie a PMX yet, and I might try a couple of grasshopper flies. Do you have a link to pictures of how to tie one up...Not yet; I tied them up at work on a break. No cameras allowed. Flyrodman: Thanks for the post. Usually I don't bother with an indicator fly because first it tangles and I usually catch more fish on the dropper... I would normally agree, but I've had so many indicators bumped in the broken water at Blue Springs Creek.
  2. I'm still looking for the perfect indicator. I came across an article that referenced the "indicator fly". The fly is not a specific fly but a small add on that I hadn't seen before (yes, I'm new to the game). Anyway, you thread the hook from the eye to the bend and then tie on a couple of inches of mono from the back forward on the opposite side of the hook. Then you fold the mono in half forming a small loop over the hook eye, and then tie the mono back to the bend on your side of the hook. Trim off the rest. Then you tie whatever you want on top of it. To use, you loop the leader through the mono loop, over the fly, and pull tight. You can then move the fly up and down as required without retying. I tied up a couple as a royal dry. Looks like it will work nice if the fly doesn’t slide up and down the leader. Anyway, any recommendations on the best fly to tie over this setup. I’m thinking about bi-visible, the royal, a humpy. Any thoughts? Tight Lines MIC
  3. Thanks for the report and pics. I've got to get out. Its been to long.
  4. Nice. Where is the Spring River in Ar?
  5. Thanks all...I'll stick to the C&R lakes.
  6. Nope, but always wanted to.
  7. I live in IL, but work in St. Louis. I just realized that one of MDC's winter trout areas is right down the road. Has anyone fished Carondelet Park Boathouse Lake before. If yes, anyone one side or structure better then the others?
  8. Found a pic... That looks deadly. Is this your receipe? http://flytyingclub....rs-missing-link I can't tell from the pic. How is the dun hackle wrapped?
  9. Kayser and TC, A number 8 stimulator on flat water, small streams, really? I would have never imagined that...figuring it would be to big. What is your favorite reciepe as I know there are many? Really a size 8, never would have thunk it.
  10. Yea I know one isn't going to do it all. I looking for the "first fly" I pull out of the box for flat calm water. If i see a hatch or nymph flashing, I readjust to match the situation. My other go to's are: Nymph broken water and flats going upstream - Pheasant tail Nymph for holes upstream - Dubbing scud Going down stream - Hare's ear and partridge wet Broken water dry - Royal Wulff Flat water dry - TBD "might try a parachute " This is a parachute.
  11. I'm a dumba&&. Didn't put EHC with the name. I didn't think about a spinner.
  12. That is also where I'm headed, but I don't know if I have hackle for 22 hooks.
  13. Do you twitch the flies at all? Same list of standards: Pheasant tail, hare's ear, scuds, etc?
  14. Right now the Griffith's is my go to, but I've read in mulitple places to get a fly in the water film. It is supposed to elimate the trout's the ability to "zoom in" on the fly through water refraction and magnification. This means that my flies don't have to be as perfect for those wise old Blue Springs's monsters I'm dieing to catch and who have see it all. I'm going to try a simple green and partridge but with floatant on the tips of the feathers and the leader. It is supposed to sink very slowly through the film like a dying bug. I also am going to try a Griffith's with a really small midge on a trailer. I'm experimenting with using black horse hair a friend gave me. I've tied up a size 20 with grizzly, but not black hackle, and it looks good. However, that doesn't get the fly in the film. I don't think I have the skills to tie a para-midge, but if I could that would seem to be a better option. I also wondered about a caddis with only the wing and not the front hackle. I don't know how that would affect the look of the fly or its balance in the water, i.e. would it not lean to one side or the other? So many choices, but isn't that what makes it fun. I don't know what a EHC or H&L is.
  15. Stupid question, but how exactly to fly fish for lake bows. I assume you use streamers and strip the line? Any other techniques?
  16. I'm still searching for my go to fly for dead calm water for spooky small stream trout. I love the royal wulff for broken water. I was going through fly patterns and stumbled across this. Has anyone ever tried one? If yes, your thoughts? http://www.southeast...image-6-10.html
  17. I love my wife. She got me a TFO BVK 9', 6 weight rod for my birthday. Just got to get the reel, and I'm set for smallmouth and streamers. Can't wait to break it in. Any suggestions on the reel and line. I found a Ross Evolution on sale for $149. I'm thinking about the RIO Clouser.
  18. Great offer... any combo's for a boat and room? Either way, what would two nights room and one day of boat cost?
  19. Simply awesome.
  20. This veteran wishes he will be fishing.
  21. So what is a shoulder, you didn't say Great video, thanks for posting.
  22. Thanks for joining the group and the weekly reports. See ya next year.
  23. Dude, that is getting the Ansel Adams range of pretty.
  24. Comment two... There wasn't much that the Director added that one couldn't get from a sound internet search. I'm sorry, but knowing that he came from the field versus an appointment because he was on someone's campain staff is nice to know, but it not exactly five o'clock news. Most of know the MDC budget has been and will continue to go down. The comments on the out-of-state cost for bringing kids into hunting and fishing are nice to know, but sorry it isn't "I've got to listen to news". I don't really care what is political aspirations are or if he is Republican or Democrat. I want to know about diddy mo and felt boots, water access rights, price increases in next year's licenses, mountain lions, details on bears and elk, impacts of tourism on water quality and fish reproduction, impact of this year's floods on fish populations. With that said. It was a nice interview, and I enjoyed it.
