  1. I was at the car dealer waiting on my car, and decided to tie some. I tied up a batch of Griffith's Gnats, but as I was leaving I realized I forgot the herl. Should a keep them or take a razor to 'em. I hate to waist six feathers.
  2. I'd still talk to the local office. Maybe they have the samples you would can use. Maybe you could get volunteers for a weekend trip to collect the samples. Sounds like you can walk to the Finley. Good Luck. Keep Us Posted On Projects
  3. OK...let me stress again. I've had no problems in the park. My question is for the RV parks "outside" the park.
  4. I forgot about this...and it is a great program. Basically, it works like this. The instructor gets assistance from one of the local state biologists. The class works with a biologist to develop a project for each semester or the year. The class then works in the field at a local stream, rivers, woodland, etc. They collect field data, completes research in the classroom, and then write a class paper. They then submit the paper to for to the state for review and publication. This allows each student to say, and most importantly put on a college resume, that they were co-authors on a published scientific paper. I've been told that each regional office has research that is not to complicated, but that they don't have manpower to do. It becomes a win/win. Cool program, and I wish my school would have done something like that in earth sciences.
  5. Well the wife didn't want to try fly fishing, but I made her take the lessons from our guide in Montana. I barely saw him for the rest of the trip. Anyway she's got the bug. Good news, got a fishing partner. Bad news, she wants her own setup. So I'm looking for a three or four weight rod or setup 8 feet or under. If you got an extra drop me a line.
  6. This is for Shawn.
  7. NoLuck, I've stayed in the park also with no trouble. As I was saying it is full. I heard RV parks outside the state park focus on floaters which have a tendency to get drunk and loud. I found a spot at Sand Springs. The guy at the desk told me the quite hours are enforced by on-site security. I'll let you know.
  8. What are the RV sites near Bennett that are not full of "party people"? No offense to them, but I'm looking for some place peaceful. I know about about the park, but it is full when I want to go. Mike
  9. Your timing sucks for me. I just donated a box of stuff to the local library.
  10. Yea our guide took the pic. The picture is grainy because it was the end of the day and getting dark. I hope Al will fish it for me before he leaves.
  11. Thanks Al...just a typo.
  12. Try a wet fly with the line greased up the leader to a few inches shy of the fly. Works great at Blue Springs Creek and Bennett for me.
  13. Here you go...I hope you enjoy. View from our cabin: The Falls I was talking about: Just missed one trying to leap the falls Mill Creek: Me fishing: The hole I caught my cut A little Old Faithful The Firehole river where we had a picnic lunch A little artist touch (my wife) on one of the water falls A big waterfall on the Yellowstone river A view of the canyon A little Brookie my wife caught. Another great hole down at the bottom of a suicide hill 100 ft down 80 degrees...worth the heart attack. Another cutthroat with great color Elk in the park A good way to end
  14. Haven't forgot the pics...been working/living 12 hour days since I got back. Here is a start.
  15. Everyone, Just a quick note during a break from work. I returned from a week in Livingston and Yellowstone. I spent two and half days on the water...two of the days on alpine creeks and the other half on the Shields river (a smaller river in the area that was on the property we stayed). I caught my largest Rainbow (just over 15") and my first brown, cutthroat, cutt-bow, and brookie. We caught fish all day long. I have traveled all over the world in the military, and Yellowstone is the best "nature" spot I've ever seen. You need to add it to your bucket list. I'll post more information and pics when I can get caught up from a weeks vacation. To Al, Sorry I didn't drop you a line, but we were out from 8 to 8. If you are still out there, you will have to try a hole my guide and I found at the end of a day and didn't make it back out to. It was on Mill Creek. As you go up Mill Creek Road (up the hill past the flats next to the Yellowstone River), you will see a small sign showing beginning of the park. Right past that sign you will see another sign on the right for cutting firewood. Before the firewood sign there is a little pull off. Note...if you hit the next flat where the huge million dollar ranch is, you went to far. Just below that firewood sign there is a huge hole, then a 20 foot waterfall, and another great hole below the falls. We were watching fish trying to jump up that waterfall for 20 minutes. Most of them were of really good size and one was 24 inches all day long. We were supposed to make it back on Wednesday, but were tearing up the fish over by Bozeman. I'm still dreaming about fishing that spot I couldn't make it back to. PLEASE...let me live licariously through you. Try it out and let me know how it goes. Later All, Mic
  16. I'm not in need of a five weight, but this is a good deal for a backup rod, beginner, kid. Thought I would pass it along. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Fly-Fishing/Fly-Fishing-Rods|/pc/104793480/c/104721480/sc/105573780/St-Croix-Triumph174-Fly-Rod/711132.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffishing-fly-fishing-fly-fishing-rods%2F_%2FN-1102568%2B10005237%2FNe-10005237%2FNs-MIN_SALE_PRICE%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104793480%253Bcat104721480%26WTz_st%3DGuidedNav%26WTz_stype%3DGNU&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104793480%3Bcat104721480%3Bcat105573780
  17. I found this review, and I've been looking for a bass rod for streamers for trout, smallmouth in MO, and farm pond fishing in IL. I'm looking at the 7/8 wieght. Does anyone have one? http://thefiberglassmanifesto.blogspot.com/2011/06/cabelas-cgr-series-review.html
  18. Great link...got any other smallmouth pages?
  19. Please post a report.
  20. I like the anise oil (black liquorish smell). It seems to work just as good at the garlic bait oil, but you smell better at the end of the night . I should add...make sure the bag is in container in the fridge. If it leaks...you figure out the rest. Did you try the hot dog thing? If yes, how did it work. I bet it would be killer on yellow bellies in a farm pond. Probably could fish it under a bobber.
  21. Can we get a pic of that...
  22. Try shrimp soaked in anise oil or a bait spray in a plastic bag on a circle hook. I've also had luck dunking them in dip bait. The oil or dip gets them to the hook and the texture keeps them there. I've had shrimp last five or six fish.
  23. Leaving for Yellowstone on Sunday. Hope to see you there Al.
  24. Imagine a 20lb blue gill. It uses its width as leverage against the line. Please excuse the ignorance on my part, but I've never heard of the Tesuque tribe. Where does it derive from?
  25. So what's the trick to cleaning them?
