  1. Fishinwrench, I'll probably be around most of the winter although we may take a three week or so trip to Florida sometime in Jan or Feb. I'm up for a fising trip. Where you have in mind? Dave
  2. Anybody heard anything new on this? Dave
  3. Yea, I also remember when the Springview shop was up by the spring. Anyone remember when it was torn down? Fishinwrench, you need to post those pictures. Would that "friend" happen to be "tube"? Dave
  4. 1976 sounds about right. I remember the fishing being really good those years. It was around 1982 or so when I went down with my youngest son who was around six at the time. It was a rather cold weekend and we practically had the place to ourselves. I also recall one year when I started the morning up by the Holland Dam and could only see two other people-one about 100 yards downstream and one up by the guage house. Those early years you got the tag over at the garage and could tell how many people were there by the number on the tag. A hundred people would be considered a large crowd. Dave
  5. First off, ethanol does not "breakdown into water". Ethanol is hyroscopic and therefore absorbs water from the atmosphere. That's not a big problem for cars as they have a closed fuel system as opposed to vented systems in most marine engines. I know of no magic additives that will prevent this. Secondly, ethanol is a powerful solvent and will therefore attack the seals over time and lead to big problems. The best solution is to use alcohol free gas if you can get it. As Phil points out, most marine dealers can get a waiver and sell alcohol free gas even in Missouri where state law mandates its use at all filling stations. The higher octane gases in Missouri also contain alcohol. Somehow we must convince the politicians how much damage ethanol is doing and get widespread waivers on mandating its use in all gasoline being sold. If we want to use it in our cars-fine. But give the consumer a choice. Dave
  6. What's ring free? Dave
  7. One more note. Most marinas in Mo have a waiver and sell gas without ethanol. Have to be careful though as I have heard that some claim it is alcohol free but really isn't as the non alcohol is more costly. Dave
  8. John, Don't count on that 93 octane gas to solve your problems. Most gas sold in Missouri contains 10% ethanol, even the high octane stuff. I don't believe any "additive" will negate the negative effect of ethanol on motors. Alcohol is very hygroscopic and is also a powerful solvent that will eventually dissolve rubber fittings and motor seals. I contacted my state represenative here in Mo to try to rescind the mandatory 10% ethanol but got no response. Wasn't surprised as he was a strong supporter of the bill and is also a corn farmer. A couple of weeks ago my weed eater suddendly stopped running. The fuel line had been "dissolved in two". Took it to a local small engine repair shop and the owner said his business has been booming since ethanol gas came on the market. Boaters need to get a grass roots camapign going to get rid of mandatory alcohol. I have two outboards, a 15 horse on my Jon boat and a 115 on my bass boat. Eventually I will end up with $10,000 worth of junk. Dave
  9. Is that tied with marabou or oestrich. Sure looks like oestrich herls in the picture. If it really is marabou, how do you wrap it to get that look? Dave
  10. I too had heard of his death. We live in outstate Mo but take the St Louis paper and I have not seen his obit in it nor is it on their web site. If I come across it I will post a link. Perhaps some of the St Louis people on the forum here saw and I simply missed it. I also have that book he published years ago. Would be great if his son and daughter would publish a reprint in his memory. It was a great little book. Dave
  11. A good looking fly. I went to Rowly's web site but couldn't find it there. Dave
  12. Sounds to me like you might not have the transducer mounted properly on the back of the boat (I assume that's where you have it). If it is not positioned right there will be turbulance when the boat is moving causing a bad signal. The transducer needs to be mounted very slightly below the water line and slightly to the side of dead center. At least that is what my depthfinder manual says. You might try re-positioning the transducer. Just a thought Dave
  13. Bob, I've fished Bennett for over 30 years and I have to agree with you. On numerous trips, I've noticed that in the early morning there seem to be a lot more fish caught in Zone 2 than in zone 1. Don't know about zone 3 as I rarely go there. You will also see a lot more fish on stringers in 2 than in 1. At least it seems that way to me. I've also noticed that people don't "crowd you" as bad in 1 as in 2. Dave
  14. Yeah, that bank can be downright dangerous. An easier access is to cross over the bridge and there are some steps that go down to the water. Dave
  15. The best info on bamboo rods can be found on Clark's board. Post your info and pictures there and you can get a good estimate of its value and you can also sell it on their board. Here's a link: http://clarksclassicflyrodforum.yuku.com/ Dave
  16. The "High Bank Area" is that stretch of fast ripple water just downstream from the arch bridge. So named, I suppose, because of the high bank on the one side that is difficult to get down. This area generally holds a lot of fish. Dave

    Bbq Sauce

Show Me sauce made in Columbia is hard to beat. Blues Hog is also pretty good. Dave
  18. I agree with JJ. Park store is ok but overpriced and not that knowledgable unless you talk to Jim Rogers himself. Charlie Reading would be best place to go. Very helpful and will work with you for best outfit for what you are willing to spend. The test pond is great. Then browse around his store-a great flyshop. Dave
  19. Fishinwrench, Thought I would bring this post up again. I have found one source of ethanol free gas. It is 100LL, which is 100 octane low lead gas designed for aviation use. One can find it at most any airport but it is expensive, about $.75 to 1.00 over regular gas. Fishinwrench, you stated that higher octane gas was okay, would 100 octane be okay? Would be worth the higher price to not damage the motor. Should more oil be used with it? Dave
  20. Also try Schnieders rod shop in Mountain Home Ar-his Tiger Eye blanks are great. Hook And Hackle is also a good place (you get 20% off on internet orders) Both places have web sites. Dave
  21. I sent you a PM on the trailer Dave
  22. Wanted to throw in my thanks to your tutorials also. Those are very nicely done. Dave
  23. Gavin- yea, that's how I do em now, just looking for something different. Mike-haven't tried any of them yet. That web site I posted had some that sound pretty good. Dave
  24. Well, I can answer my own question. If anyone else is interested, here is a link to 30 marinades for salmon: http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1-1,grilled...n_sauce,FF.html
  25. Does anyone have any recipes for a good marinade type sauce for grilled salmon? I'm thinking of sauces like the fancy restaurants serve their salmon dishes with. Dave
