  1. Thanks for the directions. Sadly, I don't have a 4x4. When I was there, I was deeply aware of the limitations of my Ford Focus in such situations. I did see a jon boat flying through yesterday, which is what got me thinking about whether or not to kayak there. I'd like to think that most of the boaters wouldn't be total hosers if they saw a kayak, but you never know......
  2. I was just re-reading this old thread. I had gone down to Blunks today and scoped it out. Couple questions came to mind....... Where is Taylor Shoals? Has anyone had experience putting in a kayak at Blunks? Wondering how it would do and if the current too swift to paddle up to Y-Bridge and then float back down? Also curious about McCord's Bend. I see it on the map not being too far from Blunks. Is there a put-in at McCords?
  3. There are at least one fly tying iphone app that I'm aware of. It's called Fly Bench by Up and Atom Digital. I think it gives you one fly to start with and you have to buy instructions on the rest for about .99. They include video of how to tie it. I The second app I found is called Fly Tying by Alexander Magdics. It gives you four flies to start with. I attempted to download that one to my phone but you need IOS 5. My 3g doesn't support it. I downloaded the app to my kid's ipod but haven't pryed it away from her to look at it yet.
  4. Photo was taken with the Iphone 3. I know I've got to upgrade that phone.......
  5. That's some funny stuff. Couple of states missing though, huh? Maybe when my brain wakes up and with the help of others on here we can fill them in..........
  6. Finally broke out the tools I bought last weekend both to practice my whip finish and to tie a woolly bugger. Photos are attached but, wow, I put way too much maribou in that tail. It's pretty bushy. I had to laugh when I was done. I'm gonna enjoy tying, but I'll sure need the practice. I just wish I had time to do it more often. That said, I will fish this darn ugly, bushy fly and won't give up until it catches something whether it be the swimming kind, the leafy kind behind me, or the rocky kind at the bottom of the river.
  7. I've never gone below the bridge in Ozark on the Finley, but I've taken my kayak out quite a bit on the upper Finley. I've enjoyed it. I've caught plenty of google eye and panfish. It's not bad.
  8. Were you guys boating up or fishing from the bank? If you were bankfishing it, what side? Finally, what lures were you fishing?
  9. As a government employee, I can testify that efficiency, common sense, innovation, and hard work are not what is valued. Mediocrity, teamwork (so you can spread the blame around), and form over function are what's valued.
  10. I am planning on taking a fly tying class at River Run this Saturday morning. If the weather isn't bad, I'll likely want to hit the water afterwards. Is anyone with experience planning on being there this Saturday afternoon (depending on generation) who would want to maybe do a little mentoring?
  11. It's not the alcohol. I'm enjoy a drink sometimes in my off time, especially if I'm out and in nature. However, I am generally respectful, don't make a spectable of myself, and never leave behind garbage. The idiots would still come, only they would hide their alcohol until later, drink before, or just generally be disrespectful without it. I've never known a ban or a rule to prevent the activity among those who are truly seeking to do it. Just look at all the folks drinking at college sporting events. There's a reason flasks still sell, LOL.
  12. Aro, I feel your pain. I've tried the Springfield area as much as I could and came up empty too many times. I've done a bit at Delaware, but that was slack too. From what I read, I'm thinking Galena and below is where you gotta be. Anyone know if a float trip from James River Outfitters would be worthwhile during the run, in terms of catching?
  13. Justin, I have to laugh because my "good reel" is only a Dogwood Canyon that doesn't have extra spools for it. That sits on my 4wt TFO rod. The one I have on my 5wt was a $10 BPS clearance that was a little larger than I needed rigged my old 5wt line as the backing to the 6wt floating line on it now and it's crapping out from having been dropped on some rocks. It's not a pretty site, believe me. Trust me....a good reel, preferably a 4-6wt that I can have extra spools for, is on my wish list right now. I'm looking at the Ross Flystart #2s for now. Maybe in a month or two.
  14. I loved the audio reports. I would welcome more of these.
  15. I was there on last Monday and it was fishing very well despite the high winds. Was using GRHE mostly and doing just fine.
  16. Last time I was at BPS they had the Redington Crosswaters Rod/Reel Combo in a 9' 8wt on sale for $99. I've heard good things. May want to check that out too.
  17. I am lukewarm to the t-shirt idea simply because I would probably forget to wear it. The pin I could put on my vest or attached to my waders. A hat is okay. Personally, I'm not a big ball cap wearer. All that said, I propose we set up a polling thread on those three ideas, or a fourth choice of none. Then let the voting go for a week or so, and explore further pending the results.
  18. I would be up for purchasing one. It would be nice to be able to identify forum members. That way not only could we meet each other, but we could rat each other out when the stories get too tall Maybe we could have a design contest. Definitely a pin though. No patches.....I left those behind when I got kicked out of cub scouts, LOL. (With apologies to any real, and well disciplined, Boy Scouts!)
  19. Looks great. Much more...in your face. Bolder and easier to read. Glad you're going into the social stuff. Sadly, I won't follow. I've never had a facebook page, and hopefully never will. Had to draw the Luddite line somewhere. I also love the re-designed top page. The work you put into all of this is greatly appreciated. Thanks for creating such a great space for us.
  20. I went out today and it was GRHE all the way. Wind was hell though. Had to time it in between gusts to get a cast off. Of course, with the wind came leaves on the water and I fouled up quite a bit. Still, the weather was warm enough and it just felt good to be out. I probably pulled in about 7-8 stockers in the three hours I was there.
  21. You're a braver man that I am with that cold weather. At least you got a bit of a reward.
  22. Thanks for the report Tim. I've got tomorrow off and was going to head down there. Hopefully, the hook up will be as good as your report. I don't necessarily need size, just some old fashioned catching.
  23. For the coming spring, I'm considering purchasing a sinking line in a 5wt. I'll likely get a bargain reel at BPS Outlet to throw it on. My goal is to be able to fish streamers and the like from shore or maybe while kayaking. Ideally, I'd like to be able to strip at depth, or even on the bottom. The species I'd be looking at would be bass or panfish. Just toodling around. Anyone have any experiences with sinking lines they'd like to share, and maybe a recommendation on a reasonably priced line they really like for this.
  24. I rarely ever buy DVD's. I know there is a wealth of info on Youtube. However, does anyone have any particular favorites among DVD's that are instructive and easy to follow for both casting, and beginner tying? I don't want to buy blind and I'm really only looking for one or two good ones. I'm don't need to start a library.
  25. Emoticons don't seem to be coming up as graphics, only as written descriptions.
