If you have a fly rod, try a harvester midge 15" under an indicator. My best fly year in and year out on the Norfork, White and Taneycomo. Just dead drift and watch the indicator. If I'm not mistaken, Blue Ribbon Fly Shop had reopened in Mtn. Home, also. Plenty of good places to stay in Mtn. Home, Comfort Inn being my favorite.
Thanks, Flysmallie, I found another place, too. Hootentown access and Diane, the owner, is kind enough to let me practice there. I can recommend her to rent canoes from as she is very nice. Probably does shuttles, too. Russ
I live in Nixa and I'm looking for an easy wading access to the West bank of the James to practice my river right spey casting. Preferably a gravel gently sloping bottom with a decent current. Thanks, Russ
Just got back from the lake and man were they on fire. Took my neighbor who is a new fly fisher and he caught 30-35 trout. I quit at 70 to help him catch fish. Probably the best day ever on Taney. Harvester midge 15" under an indicator. Now out to dinner with the wife and watch the Cardinals win tonight. How sweet it is!
When the students from MSU want to study cottonmouths they go to Crane to catch one. A fishing buddy and I ran into a group of students there one time and they had a moccasin they had caught in a cloth bag. They are there.
I have a pair of Korkers with boa lacing system. It seems that there is a little something wrong with every pair of Korkers I have had, but that being said, I really like this pair. The studded rubber soles are ok, but, of course, not as good as felt.
Just got back from there (Saturday evening). Fished Wildcat, Rim, and Roundhouse. Struck out at Wildcat and Rim but got into them at Roundhouse. Nitro caddis was the hot fly. A few measly caddis came off as it warmed up in the afternoon. Should be a better hatch by next weekend.
Try the water at the state park campground, just below Bull Shoals dam. Throw a Harvester midge 15" under an indicator. Stop at Dally's fly shop in Cotter on highway 62 for flies and techniques and directions. Wildcat shoals is also good. A fly called a Little White Lie is also good if shad are coming through the dam.
2 friends and I fished at Patrick and Blair Saturday with the river running at 1100 cfs and I can say that I'll never fish the river at that level again. Too many spots we couldn't reach. one of my buddies did catch a bunch of trout Czech nymphing, though.
I called Rio to find out what knot to use to tie fluoro to nylon and they said to use a 4 turn surgeons knot, same as a double but with 2 more passes through the loop. I use a Pitzen knot to attach tippet to fly. Best knot I have ever found.
Fished the river yesterday with a buddy who had never seen it before. Introduced him to Czech nymphing and he took to it quickly. We caught 12-15 trout including a nice 15 incher for him. Saw a bald eagle around Dora. He is now hooked on the river and Czech nymphing, too. Can't wait to get back!
On super bowl sunday the Southwest Missouri Flyfishers will be doing a stream cleanup on Crane Creek. We will meet at the upper wire road parking lot at 8 am. There will be coffee and donuts. Trash bags will be provided as well as gloves. If you would like to join us bring your waders. It's a yearly event. You will be back in plenty of time to watch the game.
