  1. watching tv with the wife at midnight Sunday when i decided on a spontaneous trip to Taney. got on the water about 0130 and it being a dark night (no moon) i started throwing dark flies. after getting my butt kicked i thought ok, try something bright. tied on a white rabbit strip streamer and just hammered 'em. 30+ trout including an 18'er and 2 small whites. just goes to show you there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to fishing. lesson learned!
  2. next time you're down there under a full moon, try white. brite night brite fly, dark night, dark fly.
  3. glad to have you on here. i live in Nixa as well. i fly fish for trout and white bass.
  4. THAT WAS A 125 LB COON!!!!!!!!!!! )
  5. fishing pal, Tim Young, from bass pro, and i hit the river and did pretty well, about 16 trout, mainly rainbows, in about 1/4 mile of stream. most of Tim's fish came on a brown rubber legs, most of mine on a green caddis larva. water was clear and running about 620 cfs. bugs were hatching all over the place.
  6. welcome to the forum. keep us posted on your trips.
  7. Duckster, sure enjoyed the night. i'm glad i called you. good to be with you and Leonard. it was just like old times when the fish come on almost every cast. thanks to Leonard's hibernator.
  8. brown thread body w/black rib.
  9. Fishing buddy and i fished midges today and really hammered 'em. Rusty brown was the best pattern. See Jeremy Hunt's instructions on how to tie this great fly. Fish it about 12-15" below the smallest indicator you can find. Had 3 over 15" and 22 overall in about 3 hours.
  10. toko my boat and 2 friends out Monday with 2 units running. only caught 8 between us and damaged my prop on a run up to the cable (too close to the north bank going through rebar). called Lilleys and they said to bring it by and they'd replace it for me. not only did they do that but gave me a great price on the rebuilt prop. there is just NO PLACE on the lake better than those folks. thank you again for the great help. Russ
  11. tons of fly casting videos on the web, youtube, etc.
  12. Ducky, just a few green heads around KOA.
  13. took the boat with the new motor (one of Phil's old ones) to fish the high water today. the fish were ALL OVER a thick cerise san juan worm. fishing buddy and i caught over 30. most were really small with one 18"er. motor performed great, jumped my 16' v-bottom right up on plane. a man with a boat fears no high water!
  14. call G L custom rods in Cassville, Mo 417 342 8781. Gordon can fix you up. great guy to deal with, too.
  15. Hargrove told me once that there was nothing to keep the trout stocked in Brown Spring creek from mating with Crane's rainbows, and he believed that had, in fact, happened. all the speculation and opinions expressed here doesn't mean the trout there are any less fun to catch, thankfully.
  16. nothing over 15" and left the camera in the car, so no pics.
  17. hit the lake this p.m. for some midging. got 38 in 3 hours! great action! rusty brown midge on 14 tmc 2499spbl. herons, seagulls and black vultures were all over the place. ppm at about 8 temp 56.5. lake is fishing very well. good thing i went today, running water all day tomorrow.
  18. i met tom in the early 80's and also his music partner Brewer in his store. his map was the catalyst that really got me into fly fishing for trout in the ozarks and led to my meeting the McKee family on this river. now they are great friends, always greeting me with a big hug. my son Rusty guides for Myron and i regard the nfow as the greatest trout stream in the state. wild trout, clear water, towering bluffs, bald eagles, flowering dogwoods, what's not to love?
  19. spent the day on the river and caught 4 rainbows, 3 on Czech nymphs and 1 on a 56er. had a bald eagle fly over me glistening in the sun. but had an equipment failure, waders sprang a leak. the river is very low.
  20. got 8 today, mostly on dries, mostly small, then broke my tip on my bamboo rod . then the ferrule came off as I was breaking it down:((
  21. I took my 16' fishing boat on Taney for the first time Friday. Never had the courage to take it there b4. Friend Tyler Williams and I caught fish on almost every drift. he'd have caught more if he hadn't changed flies every 20 seconds. the boat and both outboard and trolling motor performed perfectly. Very encouraging trip. They were running two units at 704+', but had predicted 25 MW.
  22. sorry for the multiple posts. didn't think they were going up.
  23. Once again this past weekend Phil and Marsha Lilley hosted the Project Healing Waters veterans for the annual PHW outing. they housed and fed a BUNCH of vets from as far away as Memphis Tn. PHW also presented each participating vet with a free TFO fly rod and reel. So remember TFO when you're shopping for a fly rod or reel and Lilleys Landing when you're needing a place to stay or a boat to rent on Taneycomo. Thanks, again Phil and Marsha! Russ Doughty
