Bought The New Kayak, Now I Need Help With Carmount Options
E Green replied to E Green's topic in General Angling Discussion
tried to ask, are the foam block options a bad idea....typo...sorry -
I guess maybe I should have looked into this part first, but assumed i wouldn't have any issues finding a rooftop carmount for my kayak. I bought the 12 ft long, 49 lb Old Town Diringo 120 and would like to transport it with both my 2012 Chevy Traverse and Toyota Prius if possible. I talked to someone at Thule who said the traverse rail system is a mess and they don't have anything that matches up with that vehicle. He joked that I should get foam blocks or another car...haha I have NO IDEA about this stuff.....are the foam blco options a bad idea? Anyone have any info that might help me? thanks again! I can't wait to get out on this kayak

Taking My Family To Black, Mo Next Weekend...any Tips?
E Green replied to E Green's topic in General Angling Discussion
That was one of the most scenic areas I have ever visited in my life. The weather wasn't the best by any stretch of the imagination but the natural beauty of the region was enough to keep us smiling. Elephant rocks and the Johnson shut ins were amazing....I have never seen anything like that before. I only had about a 20 minute window to fish on the Black River but I landed 3 smallmouth bass on my first 3 casts! One was maybe 14 inches and the other two were small. I would LOVE to go back to that area just to fish because I saw a ton of smaller streams (ottery stream was one that looks promising) that were probably great smallmouth locations. I also imagine that stretch of the Black River is good as well. I am used to the deeper murky black river that flows through poplar bluff...didn't expect to see the Black River look so majestic and tranquil. amazing area..... -

Taking My Family To Black, Mo Next Weekend...any Tips?

THANK YOU all! That is the info I was looking for! -
We have never been to that area yet and have been told by many locals here to check out elephant Rocks and johnson shut-ins. We will certainly do that one day. Our cabin is right on the shore of a pond and the owner said it is full of bass, crappie and bluegill so I will fish that. My two year old boy loves it when i let him hold the pole while a ferocious 4 inch blugill or sunny is on the other end....priceless moments! Anyways, any other parks or places I should visit while we are in that area? The cabin/property is right next to the black river so hopefully I can get about 2 hours on my own one day to fish that as well. This is one beautiful state!

yeah not this past sunday, but the one before, I fished 10 mile and did great numbers wise and caught 2 0or 3 in the 11-12 inch range and then 1 big one that was about 15 inches (i know...not that big...haha....but this is a tiny creek) and a bunch of sunny's Then just this past sunday, not one nibble.....I was using crank baits both times....

should the last part of sept and first two or so weeks of Oct still be very productive smallmouth fishing season in smaller wade streams and middle stretches of current river? I am also taking the family to a cabin in Black MO next weekend for 3 nights and would love to fish on the black river up there. It looks like a wonderful area and cabin.

jdmidwest...I am very hopeful that I can purchase a nice fishing kayak for this creek as well. I am going to get a nice set of waders very soon and then hopefully a nice kayak before next spring. There are several deep and wide areas in all of these creeks that I am talking about where it looks like the fishing would be outstanding but I just can't get to and through these stretches without floating or paddling across. -
I Need To Purchase A Nice Set Of Waders And Have No Clue
E Green replied to E Green's topic in General Angling Discussion
thanks for all the great info. I am going to stop at a fishing/hunting store in poplar bluff tomorrow and see what they have. I guess the snake worries i had are more me overreacting but like i said, I figured this was the perfect place to ask. Just to clarify, i love herpatolgy and have been blown away by the numbers of turtles, snakes, skinks, lizards, frogs etc etc etc that we have down here. I love all wildlife and consider myself an avid conservationist. With that said, I moved here from Milwaukee a couple years ago and spent the other parts of my life in Chicago and NE Ohio so being around poisonous snakes is new to me. I don't mind them at all and have nothing but respect for all living things, but I certainly didn't want to do something stupid and put myslef in danger either. A couple neighbors tell me I am out of my mind for wade fishing those creeks and taking hikes at Otter Slough and Mingo (which I LOVE to do for herp pics etc. I know they are overreacting but thought I would bring up the subject here and play it safe. I also want waders for other reasons as well...comfort, warmth, cover exposed skin from poison IVY/Oak, ticks etc..so again, thank you so very much for all the info. The Ozarks are simply wonderful and at times majestic....take care -

I have been wade fishing a couple different stretches of a fantastic little creek near my home in Butler County, this summer. This type of fishing is new to me so it has been a work in progress all year. With that said, it has quickly turned into a major obsession and a much needed respite from the daily grind of my normal life. Cabin fever sets in about midweek and I find myself daydreaming about which stretch of creek I will wade fish on the upcoming weekend. Anyways the advice I am seeking with this post is in regards to what type of gear should I be using/wearing. I ask this vague question because up until this point I have only gone in the creek with a pair of swimming trunks and water shoes. The last 5 times I have gone (5 weeks in a row, all different times and in various weather conditions) I have come across several water moc's. Each time they have left me alone just as I did them. Beautiful creatures no doubt but i am worried that I might come across one and cause it to feel cornered or threatened. On top of that, i am quite positive that I have passed many more without even knowing it. There are many portions along this creek where I must walk through vegetation or along the bank and I would feel much better if i had some type of waders on which covered up my exposed legs and feet. I have a two year old son and a 4 month old baby girl so chances are something that I shouldn't be taking. Do they make waders that are thicker through the legs to protect against snake bites? I have never even looked at waders before...namebrand you recomend? do you wear reg shoes underneath the waders? any info or opinions would be appreciated. thanks

completely agree on the time ceasing to exist thing....I have been here in the southern MO Ozarks (just east of Elsinore MO) for almost 3 years now and i have become a completely different person (moved here after 6 years in milwaukee...also spent time in chicago and grew up on campus at Kent State University in NE Ohio). Wade fishing 10 mile creek near my home is such a treat....all the stresses of the week just wash away....

i enjoyed that...thanks

did pretty good yesterday with several crankbaits on a smaller stream in southeastern MO ozarks in butler county.

Who's Happy About This Weather?
E Green replied to ozark trout fisher's topic in General Angling Discussion
My wife and I moved here in March of 2010 from Milwaukee, WI so yeah, the humidity in june-end of august has been one of the hardest transitions for us. One the other hand, it was WONDERFUL to not have to get up 40 minutes early every winter morning to do the whole ice/snow routine before work. How long into the fall can you still fish for smallmouth, sunfish, goggle eye etc with some success? Is it just the trout that keep biting in the colder climate/waters? -
Awesome info Gavin and Mic...thanks...this website is FANTASTIC! I certainly have quite a bit to learn...haha....terminology included.... I'm heading to town (Poplar Bluff) to run some erands and take my little on to the library. I am going to stop at the fishing/hunting store and see if they carry some of these lures...notes taken from above...thanks again
-
are these actual names of particular individual lures, the style of lure or the brand names (spooks, craft sammy 100, gunfish etc..)? I seem to always go back to crankbaits because that is what I have had the most success with in the two summers I have lived and fished here in the MO Ozarks (mostly farm ponds, a couple MDC ponds and the Current River) I see many other people using plastic worms and I just don't do it right for some reason...seem to set the hook about 10% of the time...I don't own a canoe yet so i am always fishing from shore in the ponds and wade fishing in the Current. I would like to look into these other lures listed above...good idea for the type of fishing I am currently doing?
-
Is this event fly fishing/trout fishing only? I am VERY interested in checking out some different sections of the Current River and I was planning on doing just that this weekend. We moved to the Elsinore, MO area from Milwaukee, WI last spring and we have only been to Van Buren and Doniphan area of the Current(love both places just want to see/experience some other spots as well). I would love to come out and support your efforts and spend the day on the river fishing. Any link to a website where i can get more info on rules, address, directions etc.? Like I said, new to the area so still trying to figure out where everything is... edit....nevermind..just saw the number listed to call for more info...thanks and good luck with the event....hope it goes well
