  1. I am going to try and get to the Cane Creek access area at the PP bridge this weekend. It looks so shallow from the bridge but maybe I can walk along the bank and find a deeper pool with some fish. I still hope to find an access point on 10 mile where I can shore/wade fish. Once I get my solo canoe next spring, I plan on dropping it in at the TT bridge like you mentioned earlier and just paddle it up and down as far as I can go. I have been driving to Doniphan and Van Buren every weekend this summer to wade fish the Current. It has been so much fun...love that river. Last weekend I caught 22 fish on two short trips. Most were just sunnies, some goggle eye and a few smallmouth....all were small but I'm completely new to all of this and I just love getting out and exploring. the fish are a bonus....maybe i'll pull in a big one this weekend.... I am about to go try out a place off of bus 60 in poplar bluff called Sun Stephens Cons. Area. I think it is a couple acre pond off of a dirt county road but I think you can hike about 3/4 of a mile to the black river as well. thanks for all the info...i love this region. By the way, does the fishing (what I'm doing; shore/wade with topwater rapallas and crankbaits, some rubber worms and plastics, etc)stay pretty good into Nov or is all of this fun about to end very soon?
  2. This is the info I have been looking for regarding Cane and 10 Mile Creeks. I live right up the road from 10 mile/TT crossing in foxwood Point right off of TT. I was hoping I could walk down to the water from the TT Bridge and shore/wade fish but it sounds like this is a bad idea.....very very bummed about that.... Cane Creek has an access point on PP which is also very close to my home. Have you every fished that stretch of the creek?
  3. I am also looking for various spots around the poplar bluff area to fish as well. I am very interested in checking out Cane Creek and 10 Mile Creek but it seems like the majority of the land thate borders both creeks in this area is private. Does anyone know where HGWY TT crosses 10 Mile Creek maybe 10-12 miles south of Poplar Bluff? That is where I THINK I could access the river to shore fish but they do have no parking signs on that part of the road. I was thinking about having my wife drop me off and then come back and get me a bit later to get around that problem. Is it illegal to walk down to the creek right there? I know I don't want to trespass. Once I am in the water wade fishing, that is no longer private property then right? FYI...I am not one to litter and I don't keep the bass I just love fishing. I drive a Prius, we have solar panels on our Green house and I am also very interested in starting a stream Team (or joining) for Cane Creek around HGWY PP and do the HGWY litter control program for that stretch of PP so for the record I would only leave footprints. that part of the MArc Twain is my home and it is amazing but I must say it is disgusting to see what the "locals" just throw out the windows when driving by or leave at the Cane Creek public fishing spot right on PP. It makes me so angry.....anyways rant off...sorry....haha I have also found a few other spots listed on the MDC website where I can fish around poplar bluff. Aldred, Beaver Lake, Sun Stephens etc. anyone have any info about these places that a rookie might need who has never been? edit....also I am not scared of snakes and in fact I love finding then because I think they are very neat. However, are those two creeks places where I should keep an eye out for cottonmouths or are those places not secluded enough. Just moved here last year from Milwaukee so forgive my ignorance on said subjects above....

I am very new to all of this and just recently found out about this website/discussion forum. My wife and I moved from Milwaukee, WI to the Elsinore, MO area in spring of 2010. Just a few weeks afer we arrived, our son was born. Life has been quite hectic with so many drastic changes in this past year and half but I have been able to get out to the Current River to fish a handful of times. It has quickly turned into just about my favorite thing to do. Two weeks ago I pulled in a 15 maybe 16 inch smallmouth while wade fishing with an ultralight pole, 8LB test. That was some serious fun and I thought for sure I was going to lose it. Besides that I just caught a couple sunfish (which are so colorful down here..never seen any panfish/bluegill/sunfish like that before). I seem to feel better using original floating rapala's because I have had the most success with those. I purchased a few different styles of plastic worms and I plan on trying those out this weekend as well. My wife's family is coming down from chicago for the holiday and we are going to spend 2 days on the Current while they are here. They are big city people so it will be nice to show them the beauty that exists down here in the Ozarks.... anyways...love this place and esp that river....I need to find some more spots/places to visit and i also need all kinds of fishing tips/advice...life of a rookie..haha take care
  5. fj80...thanks for sending me the pics and I'm glad you sold it. take care
  6. thanks for all the info everyone and offer siusaluki. I know I am coming up that way on sept 24th to see one of my favorite bluegrass bands (leftover salmon from Colorado) who are playing just outside of Carbondale. Maybe, if the offer still stands I can swing by and check out the canoe you have just to get some idea as to what I should get based on my size/needs/interest etc. As far as the car rack goes, Yakima is the name i have heard multiple times so I will look into that as well. As far as what I need/am looking for....i don't plan on portaging much at all or going into any water with rapids. The thought of needing to stand up never really crossed my mind....I guess I'm not sure if I would need to be able to or not. I mostly want to use it on ponds and small lakes here in the Elsinore/Van Buren/P Bluff area. There are a few creeks/streams that I would like to go out on but I'm not even sure if they are deep enough to canoe anyways (10 mile, cane creek etc). I just assumed the smaller the canoe, the easier it would be for a single person, esp a beginner like me, to manage. I an going to look up the wynonah brand and get some info on $, size weight etc....
  7. I desp. want a solo canoe and am ready to buy one ASAP. I want one for fishing in smaller lakes, ponds and slow moving rivers/creeks if possible. My total budget would be around 1500.00 which would have to include hardware for the top of car carrier.( I drive a toyota prius and a Pontiac Grand Am, so I think a trailer is out of the question. However, if I can spend a few hundred under that, life would be much much better...haha I'm looking for the following features/description shorter (under 14 ft I guess???) reasonably light durable/easy to maneuver and paddle, well balanced...hope that makes sense...haha do you pro's think the canoe for sale in this thread/discussion is something that I would be happy with? Should i just drive to Carbondale, IL and pick something like this up at the Dicks like already mentioned? any suggestions on the top of car carriers for canoes. i know...sorry....stinking rookies and all those questions! haha I'm just so ready to go out into some of these wonderful places and fish. I have rediscovered my love for fishing since we moved here from Milwaukee last spring. I love shore fishing but I would love to have more access that I think a canoe would provide. thanks for any advice and sorry for the long post..... ps..very very interested in this canoe for sale btw...just looking for some advice/direction before I throw my money down...
  8. I'm new to this area and have a few questions about Duck Creek so hopefully you can help me out. Is this the lake that is located in MINGO? Can you fish at other places in Mingo as well? I have been to the park twice since moving here and I realized there are a bunch of different bodies of water but I wasn't able to tell them apart by names or any of the markings on the map. edit>>>>>>>>nevermind, I followed your link and found a plethora in info...thanks
  9. Hello everyone; nice fishing forum you have here. I moved here last april because my wife got a new position with her company which required the relocation to the Elsinore/Polar Bluff, MO area. Since arriving, I have rediscovered my love for the outdoors and esp. fishing. I forgot how much fun it can be. With that said, I must admit that I am somewhat of a novice so any and all hints/info/suggestions are welcome. I am also looking to purchase a solo canoe asap. I am looking for a somewhat light and easy to maneuver model that I can use to fish on small lakes, ponds and various slow moving rivers in this area. I don't intend to use it for long overnight float trips where i will need to run any rapids. I think 50 lbs and 14ish feet long is the target weight and height. So, if you happen to be reading this and are selling what I have described, I would love to hear from you. What are some the great fishing spots in the Poplar Bluff/Vvan Buren area? Right now I don't have a boat so any fishing I will be doing in the immediate future will be from the shore. Can you have some success at lakes Wappapelo and Clearwater? What about this Duck Creek place I keep hearing about at MINGO Nat Wildlife Refuge? Do I need to keep an eye out for cottonmouth and copperheads? I've been told yes and no from locals. Well, sorry about all the questions but I am a rookie! haha take care Erik
  10. If the sale hasn't been finalized and the original buyer decides they do not want this canoe then I will purchase it. I can even come and pick it up ASAP. That is exactly what I am looking for. Like I said though, I don't want to jump on anyones purchase or "cut in line".... thanks Erik Green
