junkman replied to junkman's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
Kelroy! you about gave me a heart attack. Looked at the price of your Hummingbird 998C and about fainted. It is more then my boat and motor combined. Is there such a thing as a economy model? LOL -
Portable Fish Finder Question
junkman replied to junkman's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
Kelroy, thanks for the idea. I wondered about the feasibility of doing what you did but not knowing beans from apple butter about them I figured I better ask. thanks for the info. -
i thought about buying a fish-finder to aid in fishing the many lakes here in Missouri but have no clue as to what to look for or what i would need. I just have a small boat and don't use it as often as I would like to so figured I might need one of those portable ones. my question for the experienced is, have you ever used one or had good luck with one? or should I just buy a boat mount one? Any suggestions on brand, model or features would be greatly appreciated for I am illiterate when it comes to these things. Mark

Chief, I'm like you and many others out there. Just can't wait. I imagine the fish are as tired of this heat as we are.

Over here on the west side of Missouri we as well call them black perch. I actually never herd them called green till reading this post. we always catch then in the farm ponds and they seen to be more on the black side then the green. I will have to take a picture of a pumpkin seed perch one of these days and post it.

Dog days seem like the best days for lunker bass fishing. late in the evening, every thing seems dead calm. you throw your lure into that perspective spot and than WHAAAAM. Been there don that. Remember many years ago fishing a private lake. it was a hot day in August and the water was dead calm. I had on my trusty Chugger Jr. and was anticipating some great action for they had been hitting on top for days. Set that chugger just inches from a washed out tree stump. Then that familiar pop pop pop. I had popped it about 20 feet away from the stump when I decided to just reel it in and cast to another favorable spot, when WHAM. The fight was on. I was fishing with 12 lb test so I did not worry too much but I could tell by the fight and the explosion on the surface of the water that this bass was big, but not only was it big but it was smart as well. For it decided to make a bee line strait towards the boat. I was reeling as fast as the Zebco 33 would go but this mammoth bass was built for speed for it could swim faster than I could reel. And just at the right moment the old lunker made it's way to the surface and then to mid air. with all the slack and the velocity of the shake from such massive jaws, the chugger didn't have a chance. All I and my cousin could do is stare in disbelief as my lure flew through the air. I have caught a many 5, 7, and 9 lb bass but from sight I would say it was way over 10. To me the dog days of summer and some secluded ponds make for the great fishing. Well worth the little sweat. better luck next time Mark

When we first got there sunday afternoon, the fish were going crazy yes they were hitting on top. seemed like everything was working. Lots and lots of spoonbill jumping and even seen some cats rolling. before we put the boat in we caste some lures out and caught some bass, crappie and a drum. Figured the fishing was going to be good. Got the boat in and then figured out it wasn't going to work but by then a wind began to blow. I made it back in before the white caps started rolling in but with the wind the fishing slowed. The wind switched several times and so did the fishing. early Sunday morning the rain quit for a little while and again they started the top water thing. But then the rain came again and again the fishing slowed. Where we were fishing the shad were thick and so they were getting picked off as they schooled on the surface. with the front coming through as it did I see why the fishing was good for a time but if a person was to catch a good weather favorable day, I can't see why you wouldn't have some luck. I will have to mention I was fishing at the end of a tributary so this might be why the shad were there.

I haven't seen anyone mention a hammock that sleeps two. Amazon has them that sleep two and have a capacity of 440lbs. Also they are $23.00. Cheaper than a air mattress.

Just did a night of fishing with the boy and nephew and yes I used a Colman lantern. You could see the glitter of the shad in the water and it seemed to help. Caught two 7lbs flat heads just 6 and 10 ft. in front of me. had a blast and fished all night long. but the boys couldn't hold out that long.

Been thinking about buying a fish finder but had my boat motors water pump go out at Truman this last week end , so now I have to fix it. If it isn't one thing it's another. It would probably take a while to learn how to operate one for I have never even seen one used.
-
Seems to be no one on here fishing Truman or is it just that we are a quiet bunch? Went fishing Sunday and Monday after a bait shop owner in Eldorado Springs told me a place to go. Took the boat but fired it up and soon found out that the water pump had quit. So it was bank fishing all the way. We did have a good time and did catch about 50 lbs of cats. Could have been better and could have been worse. Did see a guy check his trout line Monday and he had about 80 pounds of blues in his boat. Got to order a new pump so I can get up there again for I just love fishing Truman.

You guys are fishing the wrong lake. Went to truman Sunday and spent the night fishing me and and my boy and nephew. caught I would estimate 40 to 50 lbs of cats. Two of the biggest was two 7 pound flats. Had a great time and were all to are selves. Seen a guy run his trout line Monday morning and came back with a 45lb, 30lb and about 6 smaller blues

Where do I go? Tough question. I have went with guys to many different places and many I would not be able to get back to for I don't remember how. i do know that when I have went my self I usually fish the Osage arm or the tail water. I like fishing Truman for even though I am not a lake fisherman, and have no fish finder, I still can catch fish. A little luck is better then no luck.

Count your self fortunate for I have fished Stockton several times with miserable results. I'm not a lake fisherman and have not found the secret to success when it comes to Stockton. Now Truman I can fish but think of it this way, you got more experience, had a good time, and got a few fish for your time. And may I say welcome.

mic, I thought better post my report concerning bait on my latest excursion. Went to Truman yesterday, last night and left this morning. But sorry to say I forgot my hot dogs. I guess I will have to use them at another time and post the results. We took a throw net with us and just caught the shad and perch as we needed it. didnt catch any monsters, but we had fun. came home with around 40lbs of cats. That included 2 7lb flatheads. Can at least say I found one beautiful place to fish for there was not even a artificial light to be seen last night and no sound of an automobile. Just man and nature and was it great.

Blue goose, welcome to the forum, I am new as well and you will find discussion seems to be at a bare minimum around here sometimes. I an not a jug fisherman but I believe the rules state that you are suppose to be with them at all times, might check the rule book for I don't have one. Hope you and your family still have plenty of fun. Again welcome

No I haven't used the hot dogs yet, still soaking up the kool aid. I seen them use them onetime on tv. They used them on jug lines in the Missouri river and yes they were tearing them up. Figured I would try them this weekend for I just got a tip on a fishing spot on a Truman tributary.
-
Mic you suggested just what I was going to. I just go to wall mart and buy a bag of mediums. I saw a recipe the other day that I have in the fridge soaking which I am going to try. It sounds strange but I have seen it work in some of the big rivers. Take a package of cheep hot dogs and cup them up in chunks, then place in Ziploc bag and ad two cups water and one package cherry kool aid. Let soak for a few days then use. Pretty cheep bait so worth a try as well. Fishing might start getting better for the cats have been on the nest but should be off or coming off.

Welcome. I can remember as a kid and teen I fished more then I slept I think. the 10 ft. flat bottom was in the truck from early spring to late fall. boy were those the good ol days. then you get married and have kids and your responsibilities change. Still like to fish but don't find much time for it. what kind of bait do you usually use? maybe some of us can help you out. Mark

Thought I might move this question to the right forum and see if it gets any response. I was wanting to take the boys on a all day all night fishing trip for they have never been night fishing and was considering fishing Truman's tail waters. I have a boat but would like to find a place to fish off land for the night. would really be nice to be able to pitch a tent as well. My real question is would I just be wasting my time fishing this time of year? I would have to drive a 100 miles so figured it would be nice to know if it is feasible or if I would just be spiting into the wind. I planned on fishing with some live bait on the bottom during the night, Figured I could bring some large crawdads just in case I can't find some bait, but again allot of don't knows. any help appreciated.

I took the boat up there 2 years ago and yes the boys had fun with just cork and worm along the steep banks. Yes they did catch a little of everything. But I had never fished it at night and this time of the year. I'm used to fishing the small head waters of the Osage and it's tributaries so I thought I would sane some crawdads and bring them along if I can't find any shad. I figured live bait on the bottom for night fishing. PS sorry for posting in the wrong spot. didn't see the tail water forum till a few minutes ago. any info greatly appreciated.

Greetings fellow anglers. I just came across this site and thought someone on here would have more knowledge then I have. PS It would bee nice to to try some morning or evening fishing for a striper since I have never caught one but is this just wishful thinking?
