I always was kind of envious of you guys that live close to the clear water streams here in MO. But after reading this article, I think the muddy watered rivers in my neck of the woods look mighty appealing. No floaters, no jet boats, even no conoers. Just a river to yourself and figure just maybe I have it better off. A matter of fact, I have never seen a jet boat in these parts ever. There are a few long props around which is what you need for navigating waters around here. But a trolling motor is a standard engine for the rivers around here.

Thanks guys and thank you Al. Elk river right now i think would be quite low for I have been on it several times, and the oldest boy and the nephew paddled the first 11 miles out of Bennet Springs Sunday, but thought the scenery could have been better, plus the dragged bottom many times. You guys have given me some ideas to check out and now I can look at to which will be easy to shuttle. Again thanks.

Guys, I have not been on in some time for i have had no time for fishing. But I thought about squeezing some time out to do a canoe trip. Might be several canoes take part just for a good scenic experience. I know you guys know the rivers in southwest and south central and even central Missouri more then I do, so I ask if anyone would have a favorite 7 to 10 mile stretch with a view? Was thinking the Big Piney might be good, but have never been on it. I also know that some of the rivers around might be low in a few weeks, so that might need to be taken into consideration. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I had a aluminum 8 footer once that needed repaired. Finally junked it for got tired of looking at it. It had two seats and looked like it would have made a good little slow water boat. it weighed less then 50 pounds. Put many a mile on a 10/32 i used to have as well. the smaller ones are nice when loading and unloading.

junkman replied to Phil Lilley's topic in General Chat
Well I thought that was a great read. And wow what a opportunity. At least seeds have been planted and God's word will not return to Him void. -
Seen this on another forum but thought I would post it here for all you to look at. Like to have the money it cost. But wow what a imagination.http://www.wimp.com/boatramp/

For me it is the wife goes to sleep and I lay awake half the night trying to figure it out. Happens all the time.

It could have been like my beaver interruptions this year and I had at least ten. They didn't even pay much attention to me. I even had to get up and shew them away from my lines. if I was still a meat eater they would not have fared so well.

Sound like almost a disaster. remember almost tearing the back of a boat off when kicking a motor in gear at a fast idle. Never did that again.

Wild Boar, Come And Kill It For Me.
junkman replied to jdmidwest's topic in General Angling Discussion
My wife is from the Philippines where this recipe is from. She says only those that cant afford a pig for their wedding substitute dog. But as well she says it isn't an appropriate choice because the bride and groom will be barking back and forth throughout their marriage. Don't know if the pig would be much better with then that superstitious, for with the pig they might be squilling at each other.. -

Depends what society you are talking about. For there are many recipes out there with this being only one. Makes me thankful that I am a Vegetarian . Stewed Dog (wedding style) Recipe By : Joe Sweeney Serving Size : 30 Preparation Time :3:00 Categories : Ethnic Lamb Philippines Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 3 kg dog meat -- * see note 1 1/2 cups vinegar 60 peppercorns -- crushed 6 tablespoons salt 12 cloves garlic -- crushed 1/2 cup cooking oil 6 cups onion -- sliced 3 cups tomato sauce 10 cups boiling water 6 cups red pepper -- cut into strips 6 pieces bay leaf 1 teaspoon tabasco sauce 1 1/2 cups liver spread -- ** see note 1 whole fresh pineapple -- cut 1/2 inch thick 1. First, kill a medium sized dog, then burn off the fur over a hot fire. 2. Carefully remove the skin while still warm and set aside for later (may be used in other recpies) 3. Cut meat into 1″ cubes. Marinade meat in mixture of vinegar, peppercorn, salt and garlic for 2 hours. 4. Fry meat in oil using a large wok over an open fire, then add onions and chopped pineapple and suate until tender. 5. Pour in tomato sauce and boiling water, add green peper, bay leaf and tobasco. 6. Cover and simmer over warm coals until meat is tender. Blend in liver spread and cook for additional 5-7 minutes. * you can substiture lamb for dog. The taste is similar, but not as pungent. ** smooth liver pate will do as well. -

neighbor used to butcher pobelly pigs all the time. People would get tired of them and pretty much give them to him. But I have to admit he ate about anything. -
Sounds like the 45 70 I used to own. And I say used to. Yes never had a dear get away with it but man I finally got tired of the recoil.

More Captive Hellbender Reproduction At St. Louis Zoo!
junkman replied to Justin Spencer's topic in Conservation Issues
I don't know if they were hellbender's or not, but my cousins and I used to catch what we called mud puppies out of the local muddy creaks around here. What was intimidating was trying to get the hook out of there mouth, for it doesn't look like a cat fish mouth in there. -
Sounds like you have a avatar pic now. Hint hint

I will never forget it as long as I live. It is forever etched in my mind, an eye opening day in 1987. Actually it was October 31st. 1987. The morning was like any other morning, got up and got around, ate, and headed out the door. Now being a hybrid redneck that is for the most part redneck but yet loved my heavy metal music and smoked a little weed, I decided to pop in the cassette player Kiss "Heavens on Fire". Probably a site to see, a redneck in a old 65 ford truck banging his head to some heavy metal and all the time loud enough for all to hear. As I was driving down the road and banging my head, I looked out my passenger side window as I started to cross the train tracks not far from my house, Just in time to see 80 million pounds of steal coming towards me at 55 mph. And immediately fear gripped me as I gripped the steering wheel, for I knew that if I where to die I would be lost. The seen is still so vivid in my mind; I had put the pedal to the metal, but a old 240 six cylinder did not have much. I knew he was going to hit me but the question was, where. I gripped the steering wheel tighter then the jaws of a big mean catfish, gritted my teeth, focused my eyes strait on, and waited one intense moment for the inevitable. Then after what seemed for ever I heard the sound of steal ripping and binding from an impact so extreme few live to recount its awfulness. I was immediately flung around with a velocity hard to imagine and all I could fill was a feeling of death. For in that intense second I felt what it would be like to die. I was knocked out by the sheer force of the impact but yet thank God alive. My truck had been spun around a 180 degrees and as I woke My eyes focused to see the train stopped in front of me. My first impulse was to look out the back glass to see what the damage was. The sight that greeted my eyes was not pretty. For there was no bed and in its place was a frame and axle just twisted and distorted. immediate thought was, "wheres my bed"? Looked out my passenger side window again only to see my truck bed had catapulted 100 yards up the track. I was fortunate that it caught me behind the cab or I would not be here today. On days like today many are thinking about ghosts and goblins, but me, I always think of guardian angels.

Went out this evening to a little honey hole on the Marmaton river. First went to the neighbors pond and loaded up on perch and shad for bait then picked up the boy and nephew. First time the boy has been out since breaking his arm a few months back so figured it would be good for him to see a little action. The real story is they were pretty tight lipped tonight. I figured with the rain a coming, and my barometer going down, things would be good. But I didn't catch a one. The river is just back down to normal from the raise so it might have had something to do with the bite. The boy did see some action and actually got most of the action which was good. I think he caught 3 channels and a blue with the biggest only being about three pounds. The oddest thing was that he caught a walleye as well on a three way rig with a perch. Was a first for him. Nephew caught two channels and a flat but they were pretty small. But got to get out of the house and enjoy a great fall evening, and that was worth it in its self. Tight lines.

Current River Humble Pie With A Dash Of Reality.....
junkman replied to GloryDaze's topic in Short Stories
I have never went on a canoe trip that I didn't get wet. Seems to always be something. I know the last time I told myself and my occupant that we are not going to get wet today. 100 yards from the put in a women holding a child got into the current and was being swept out into water over here head. So had to lay the canoe over to save the women and kid. -
I have seen them on top of hills but they had been planted. Not all paw paws are created equal in my book. Most are pretty rich tasting for my liking, can only eat maybe one. But I was in some deep bottoms one time and found a tree that were very good. I stood there and ate two no problem. always told myself I should have marked it and as well found some seedlings. Take the seedlings home and then in the winter, go get some graft wood from the marked tree.but never happened. Some nursery catalogs list some of the better varieties for sale.

I looked for them this year but like others have said. didn't find a one.
