It already is left hand retrieve, it comes that way from the factory, I just took a picture of the other side of the reel since that denotes the reel size. With that being said, it can be switched to left or right hand retrieve: http://www.cabelas.com/assets/product_files/pdf/ion_fly_reel.prn.pdf

I'm doing this for the trout portion which is a rendition on a Nick Granato fly in Purple (size 6, 5262). Would obviously also work on smallies.

He posted a tutorial awhile back where he took patches of wool and cut the fibers in 2" lenghts, then cut 2" lengths of ice wing fiber, then mixed them together with two dog hair brushes. From your description that's probably it.
