tippet7 replied to Brian K. Shaffer's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
I dont know the name of that fly, but it kind of looks like a small ugly dog that was found on the side of the road -
Your kidding me? I paid the Cannon Cockers! I cant remember the name of the Admin Chief, but I have a very cool going away plaque from the 11th Marines that is hanging on my wall at home! If you were there from Nov 94 thru Dec 95, I was your Disbursing SNCOIC.

Leonard, do you want to go together? If anyone else in the Branson/Hollister area wants a ride, I can fit 4 adults and all the gear. However I would have to be back in town no later then 415pm. I know that kind of cuts it short, but we have the whole kid exchange to do up in Ozark by 5pm. PM for cell phone number and we can set up a time. John

Hello and welcome Brent. I am from Colorado myself, grew up in Longmont. Spent many days fishing in Wyoming on her lakes and rivers. do you use the fly rod for stipers? that would be a lot of fun I would think. John

I think its a blood worm. I dont think its a "traditional" San Juan. -
If someone wants to keep a couple of fish for dinner, who are we to say that it is wrong? We pay our fees to fish for trout, we pay for our license. What are we paying for? MDC studies on how many fish may be kept from a certain area to keep that area productive. If thats what we are paying for, then I say more power to em. Its been a long time since I have kept any fish(trout, crappie, brim etc) to eat for myself. The Commanding General of my house (stephanie) doesnt like to eat fish nor does she like to smell cooking fish. So I just dont do it at the house. I have had friends and family visit, and we have kept some fish for them to take home, all within legal limits and I have no problems with that at all. I do hate to see any "trophy" trout be taken. There are so many good reproductions that can be done. All that is needed is a good photograph, and accurate measurements. A few weeks ago while fishing near outlet #2, a young kid was fishing right where the water is still flowing over the rocks. he foul hooked a keeper and proceded to charge up the hill, dragging and bouncing the poor fish over rocks and then the grass. I saw him later in the parking lot and asked what he did with that fish. he said it was in the back of his car in a wal mart sack. I let him know that i didnt think what he did was right, it may have been legal, but it wasnt "right" and if he was planning on eating the fish, he had better get it on some ice. Which brings up another point. Can you legaly keep a foul hooked fish that is within the keeping size?

My dad FORCED me to try microwave trout after a great day of fishing on Deep Lake in Colorado. He assured me it would be the best trout I have ever tasted. Up until the day he passed away, I gave him grief about that dinner. That was the biggest waste of trout I had ever seen. Nope..a grill, an open fire and a skillet or a deep fryer is the only way I will do my trout.

The 1st 2 photos is of me and my brother. Both fish were caught the same day Oct 30th within 2 hours or so of each other. Notice how much more of a brownish color my brothers fish has? Where my fish is bigger, but not as colorful. I have caught 10lb rainbows in the Frying Pan River in Colorado and the colors were incredible. And I know they get their bright red from the shrimp coming through the dam. But why is there such a color difference here on Taneycomo?

"Any tips on the confrontation front" Throw rocks behind them, they will think a fish just jumped. When they turn to fish that way, throw rocks below them. Its kind of like "How do you keep an idiot busy?"

There are a ton of fishermen with bad manners, no matter where you go. I witnessed 2 guys almost get into a fist fight in the middle of Taneycomo last summer! Why? Because the 1 guy walked directly in front of the other guy while he was casting. There is so much room out there, even when there are a lot of people out there. There is no excuse for walking that close to another fishermen. NONE. As far as the having a wildlife officer near. I have NEVER seen one in almost 5 years of fishing on Taneycomo. Back in Oct, there was a guy fishing at outlet #2, actually he wasnt fishing he was snagging. he would throw his fly into the runoff, then snap his wrist in a snagging motion. I laughed at him and asked "Are you sure thats a legal way to "catch" fish?" I said catch in a very sarcastic tone. He just ignored me, he was hooking into a fish on almost every cast. I finally got sick of it and went to Anglers & Archers to ask them to call someone. I was told that the guy was reported the day before as well, by the time an officer got there he was gone. same discription (camo waders, goofy looking hat) well, no officer ever showed up that day either.

I had/have the same problem with a pair of breathable White River Waders. it seems my leak was at the seam of the bootie to the leg. I hate them. But I guess we got what we paid for. I have tried repairing them on several times with no luck. I bought a set of LL Beans neoprenes and I love em! This spring I will have to get a new set of breathables and I will more then likely go with a pair of Simms. I have had Hodgeman, and got a pair of Orvis (they were my fathers) but they all have leaks that I cannot seem to fix. so i am chucking them as well.

Love that shot. Especially the ripples on the water. Here is one I took on Oct 29th. It was cold that morning.

I got these. the picture show gray lenses, but the discription states they are "gold" lenes. so i thought i would give them a shot. Bollé 800 Swisher Polarized Wrap Sunglasses Item Number: 81385

Why not. sounds like fun. here are some of the rules from the original Fly Fishing Masters Rules - All fishing is catch and release. - All anglers are responsible for obtaining their own fishing licenses. - Only trout count in the competition. - Each angler can have up to three rods on the stream during their session. - Anglers may choose any rod weight and length with corresponding reels and lines. - Lines may be sinking or floating. - Anglers may choose any length and diameter of tippet. - All fishing must be done with a single barbless hook. - Anglers are only allowed to use one fly at a time. A second fly can be used as a strike indicator, but the hook must be removed. - Flies will be examined before competitors enter the water and judges can ask for a fly inspection at any point during the competition. - If a fish is caught using a barbed hook the fish does not count. The angler will need to replace this fish with another in order to score. - Only one angler may fish at a time. Anglers must physically “tag” each other to change who is fishing. - Each angler is allowed to measure and score two fish per session - The first fish caught by each angler must be measured and scored—regardless. - Each angler has the option of bypassing, or not recording, their second fish. If he/she decides to resume fishing, they cannot go back and count a previously caught fish. - The decision to count or not count a second fish does not need to be made immediately—the partner can take his/her turn on the water in the interim. - Once an angler records his second fish, he/she is done fishing. He or she can continue to assist their fellow team member until the team member’s second fish is recorded, or until the session clock runs out. Assist is defined as pointing out where to cast, where a fish holds, tying flies on spare rods and/or passing spare rods or the net to the fishing angler. - If an angler hooks a fish, but hasn’t landed it before the end of the fishing session, the angler is allowed to continue and land the fish to score. - All fish must be released safely. A harmed fish does not count, meaning the angler will need to replace this fish with another in order to score. - A foul hooked fish does not count. The angler must release this fish and replace it with another in order to score. A foul hooked fish is any fish not caught inside the mouth. - All anglers must land their own fish without physical assistance from his/her teammate or judge. - Anglers may use their own nets, although all must be determined as “fish safe” prior to the beginning of the session. If determined unsuitable, an alternate net will be provided. Scoring - The team’s total length, in inches, of the four-recorded trout determines their score. (to the nearest ¼ inch) - The score is compared to their session opponent. The team with the highest total inches advances to the next round. - If the total length caught by both teams is equal, the team that records their fish in the least amount of time is declared the winner. - A foul hooked fish does not count. - A fish caught using a barbed hook does not count. - A harmed fish does not count.

Small world isnt it? I left Norman in Oct of 91. Loved that place. I would have stayed if I had been a SSgt, but at the time they wouldnt allow Sgts to be career recruiters (even though I was recruiter of the year, rookie of the year and the CMC Gen Gray and the SgtMaj of the Marine Corps called me himself and told me "You are one hot sh** Cpl. Keep up the good work" ) Good thing I didnt stay though, the Murrah Building was my HQ. My ex wife (also Marine) would have been sitting at her desk on the 6th floor and would have been blown out. My 2 kids used to attend that day care at the Murrah Bldg. I knew 15 people that were killed that day. Was the Ranger out of San Diego or Long Beach? Phil...appreciate the checking for me!
