Introducing Trophy Anglers Guild
Moswimb8slinger replied to Phil Lilley's topic in General Angling Discussion
needs to be on a measuring device, a hog trough or other type of bump board is best, but a tape will due. -
This is our first year for the tournament. We are non profit but some expenses need to be covered such as banners, building supplies for displays, etc. 10% goes to the Angler of the Year and "Classic" purse, 30% is paid out at the tournaments to the top 3, for now, depending on the number of entries. That can change with the increased number of entries (top 5, top 10, etc). And a portion of entries also goes into a charity fund, and the charity is to be announced As a first year tournament series, we haven't acquired any cash contributions from sponsors to cover logistics and tournament payouts. But also consider we awarded prizes to the top 5 of 15 anglers, of which, first place prize package was worth $950 and includes a brand new Ascend FS12T from Bass Pro Shops.

slow, cold and mostly chocolate milk for water clarity. We had 15 anglers, half the field blanked, and the 1st place winner was the only guy with 5 bass. big bass was over 21 inches long, and from a video of it, looked to be 4.5- 4.75lbs. i almost got swamped by a spoonbill out in the Niangua channel and my kayak fell off the truck rack on the way to the park, the morning of the tournament (bad strap placement and a hard turn, minor scratches and 2 broken paddle clips). i still managed to catch some fish and get some AOY points, i finished 8th.

Yes, you have to stay in the kayak during the tournament, only leaving for bathroom breaks, emergencies, and you can leave the kayak to retrieve a snagged lure but you cannot make another cast until your back in the kayak. And Life Vests must be worn at all times during Tournament hours

go as far as you dare to catch fish. but there is a designated starting point that you will also weigh-in at, at the end of the day. Only the last event, The Classic on Table Rock, is a "road runner" start, which means you can put in anywhere on the lake but you must be at the weigh-in site at a designated time. in a given tournament day, I might paddle anywhere from 4 to 8 miles, covering water to find fish. I paddled roughly 4.5 miles the day i caught the 8.5lbs largemouth in my Emotion Stealth 11 Angler, 3 weeks ago

Mo-Yak Fishing Series- April 4
Moswimb8slinger replied to Moswimb8slinger's topic in Lake of the Ozarks
Good turn out for our first event with 15 awashers (15 individual kayaks). Took 60 inches(5 bass) to win 1st place and the $1050 in cash and prizes including a brand new Ascend kayak. Big bass was over 21 inches(over 5lbs) and was awarded a $100 KGB Swimbaits gift certificate. We paid out the top 5 places with cash for the top 3 and multiple prizes and gift certificates for all top 5 places. -

Kayak Fishing near Holiday Island.
Moswimb8slinger replied to Albiontiger_34's topic in Table Rock Lake
I have a orange skier flag, a small air horn (a whistle isn't going to cut it). get a milk crate and be sure to secure it with bungees to the yak, best thing to keep your tackle in. Rod and paddle leashes help keep from loosing stuff to the deep depths. Go see Eric Hansen at Ozarks Extreme Outdoors. His kayak pro shop is just pass the Silver Dollar City parking lots down Indian Point road next to Deer Run Hotel. He can definitely help you out with any other accessories, and at better prices than Bass Pro Shops -
Our first event of the year at Ha Ha Tonka state park on Lake of the Ozarks is coming up fast. We have lots of prizes to award the winners, plus big bass side pot and a "best dam" tackle box raffle. This is a kayak (human powered only, no motors or sails) fishing C.P.R. tournament. For more details, check out showmekayakfishing.org

Stop by Ozarks extreme outdoors kayak/tackle shop, it's by the Deer Run Hotel, and talk to Eric, he can give you a few pointers on what's going on in that area.

I second evilcatfish, alot of guys use the CXX out west with there swimbaits. Another choice is Maxima ultra-green(i believe that's the name) mono. Kevin (Kgb swimbaits in Harrison) throws his 8.5oz. Glide with it and that's the line Bill Semential (spro BBZ1 designer) has used for years.
-
Kietech's maybe a "swimbait", but not the "swimbaits" we're talking about.lol A backlash with braid and a heavy single swimbait(2oz plus) causes a "shock load" on the line and will usually cause it to snap. And i did initially use a 30lbs braid with a mono leader, but lost too many baits due to the braid to mono connection breaking or coming apart (invisa-braid). A 7:1 reel personally is too fast for a glide bait as you can easily over work the bait, which can give the impression that it doesnt swim very well. I use 15lbs test big game mono for up to 3oz baits and 20 or 25lbs test for heavier baits. Check your line frequently for Knicks and cuts. I'll often retie 2 to 4 times during the day.

Possible record breaking catch on 3/17
Moswimb8slinger replied to Fish24/7's topic in Lower Bull Shoals
Holy crap, she's almost square. If she was a record, it's your loss for releasing her.lol -
I believe a buddy was catching whites in Beaver creek on Monday. The small stripers should run with the whites. The bigger trophy class stripers will start showing around the end of April threw June, but they move ALOT, either put in your time at the lake or get lucky

A Lew's custom speed stick model# LMHC, 7'6" heavy, fast tip. That would be a good starting point to gauge when looking for a "small" bait set-up(and maybe my next purchase or a similar TFO). I prefer the slower reels (as seen above), i find that even a 6:4 is painful to reel as slowly as i do. And a 5:4 can be reeled at comfortable pace without being annoying..
-
My "small" rig is a 7ft mh UglyStick GX2 (for now), Abu Garcia 5600sx(5:4-1) with 15lbs Berkley big game mono clear. With the s-waver 168, the heavier (20lbs test) sinking flouro will cause the bait to nose dive and roll, and not glide very well. With the floating mono, it keeps the bait more level in the water column and the smaller diameter allows it to glide much further. My "big" bait set-up, Shimano Calcutta 400 (5:2-1) TFO Magnum Heavy 7ft 11in swimbait rod and 20lbs Berkeley big game mono clear. i haven't tried a 20lbs plus test flourocarbon with the bigger baits because i had too many break offs with the smaller 6inch baits and flourocarbon. segmented baits like the BBZ1 baits, bull shads, etc are straight line retrieves (most of the time), the characteristics of the line hardly affect them other than depth control. The only reason I'd use flourocarbon was of i was using a fast sink in 40 ft of water with a medium speed retrieve. i haven't found line visibility to be an issue with these big baits because if they see it, they're either going to eat it or curiously follow it. Then if you do catch them following it on a steady retrieve, a panicked jerk or pause/jerk maybe required to trigger a strike.
