story-- a buddy and i decided to go down to meramec spring park to do some c and r. i started with a tandem rig (2 scud pattern and buddy did a egg pattern and scud). this first male that i caught i had hooked with the bottom scud(only 8x tippet on bottom) and snapped me off. i then hooked it again and landed it. removed the scud and quick pic and release. after netting it, my buddy sticks a nice 15 inch bow but didnt get a good quality pic because the sun was behind him. these 2 fish along with a couple other smaller ones came between the upper bridge stretch to the handicap hole. we then skipped the upper portion and worked our way down and hit the white water pool that is one down from the bathroom hole. landed about 6-7 more trout here including the 5-6 lb that spit. then moved down below the white water about 50 yards and spotted a nice fish. i worked it for about 20 minutes with no luck. i checked my scud and the thread was coming off along with all the materials(i must not have tied it well) i then retied a different one on and first cast i stuck the 6 lb hen. for whatever reason it fought alot better than the first one and took me about 10 minutes to land. after about 5 minutes of reviving she swam off unharmed. whistle blew right after releasing so day was done. good trip but only got to fish for 2 hours. did notice that they are doing some improvements down there. they are cleaning moss out and putting huge bolders in the water throughout. the fish seem to like hanging around these bolders.

dont know if this has been mentioned already(didnt bother reading other posts) go stand off the swinging bridge with a green and white jig and absolutely slay the fish. when i used to fish with ultralights(about 2-5years ago)i tyed these jigs and hammered the trout. to be 100 percent completely honest, in my opinion, it is just too easy to catch them. i would all the time have people come up and "bug" me about what i was using(this is before the jig got real popular) i really enjoy helping others catch fish so i would give them several jigs and help them in presenting them. i noticed that most people jig it just barely underneath the water surface and dont have the greatest depth perception. you will find especially in the middle of the day that the trout at meramec are not that agressive so you have to bring the jig to their level. it dont matter what trout, as long as you can see it and get a drift to it you can catch it with these rubber band leg jigs. still to this day, even though i fly fish now, everybody and their brother are using the jig and catching a ton of fish. so if you want to go down and catch fish or get a beginner into catching fish, have he/she use this approach. i personally cannot stand this jig anymore just because i am tired of looking at it day in and day out and because i dont even own an ultralight anymore. i will stick to my favorite fly(secret!!!) and see how long it takes for people to catch on. oh! by the way, i have probably about 300 hooks leftover from when i did tie them that if anybody is interested in i will let go for pretty cheap. i will have to check the size, but i know they are not the biggest ones at djs but the one step smaller.(either 1/32 or 1/64). i dont want to sound negative towards the jig but i wish some more people at meramec would make the switch over to the darkside and put a fly rod in their hands. no body has respect for the flyfisherman down there at all. out of all the parks and streams it seems that the people at meramec(not mentioning any names)seem to have the least amount of stream etiquette. oh well. i still think it is hilarious that most of these people will take 4 casts and keep 4 fish in less than 4 minutes and call it a day. what ever happened to catch and release??????

thats a pretty blue female. i dont recognize that water. are you sure this is a taneycomo brown(or blue)?? kansas flyfisher, those boats are fairly inexpensive, but the catch 22 is that you have to fill it with unwanted items which may cost you big bucks. just guessing, that boat probably came with leonards fish attractor in it. -

thanks lilley i will do that next time -
as many people have already mentioned, leonard is a top notch guy and a top notch guide. even though we didnt land very many, i felt that i accomplished my goal(learn how to nightfish) i definitely learned a thing or two from leonard and i guarantee when he goes out and strictly guides people they will get their moneys worth. i dont know if it was the telephone crank or the bowfishing rigs that did it, but now i have alot of confidence in night fishing and that is key. thanks leonard
