  1. Oh, they are a sweet and simple popper option! They take color really well, are super durable, and have a good solid "pop!" And you can flip them around and fish them as Sliders too.
  2. Had some topwater and subsurface flies going out this week! We're getting closer and closer to our striper season over here in OK.
  3. This year I started the journey into doing some tying videos, Brian Wise-esque type tying videos, so that I could show some patterns that I have had guys asking about for years! Please know these aren't teaching videos designed to teach you any specific technique, they're just to *quickly* show the steps of a specific pattern. I started the year with a couple simple patterns that weren't my own originals, the Double Deceiver and some variations of a Single Deceiver, but this week I uploaded the first of several original patterns that will be coming out soon. Go check it out: The Slonch Donkey is an original pattern of mine with influences from several tiers such as Kelly Galloup and Mike Schmidt; it's a single articulated streamer coming in around 6"-6.5". I originally designed it for Brown Trout on the White River in AR, but have since used it more for Striped Bass in our local (OK) striper season. It has a very serpentine swimming motion with a slight drop from the head on the pause while the marabou and bucktail both work to keep moving and undulating all while keep the correct shape. Give one a try and see what happens! You can contact me to order as well. Material list: Back Hook: 1/0 Gamakatsu B10S Veevus GSP 100D - White 1/69" Lateral Scale White Schlappen Feathers White Bucktail Silver UV Polar Chenille White Bucktail UV Pearl Ripple Ice Fiber Gray Marabou Articulation: 19 Strand Beadalon 4 6/0 Czech Glass Beads Front Hook: 2/0 Gamakatsu B10S Double Pupil Lead Dumbbell Eyes, Medium, Yellow UV Pearl Ripple Ice Fiber White Marabou Silver UV Polar Chenille White Bucktail Gray Marabou UV Pearl Ripple Ice Fiber Gray Premo Deer Hair
  4. Is the poll only to apply to Rainbows? Because you're right, a trophy at Crane vs. Taney vs. NFOW vs. The White is a vastly different set of standards. And then Browns are completely different.
  5. Earlier this year, I purchased a Towee Calusa (if you aren't familiar with Towee: http://toweemarine.com/, it's what Jeff Trigg at Ozark Sweetwater has been running), and one of the learning curves that I expected was boat maintenance. I haven't however learned much. My Towee is stored in my garage on trailer with a 15hp Suzuki on the back and MinnKota Riptide 55lb thrust trolling motor with iPilot, it's a great boat. My question is this: What are your basics for boat maintenance? For the boat itself, electronics, motor, trailer, etc. What are the things you must do for maintenance and how often? TIA!
  6. I just did some size 4/0 and 6/0 Peacock bass flies on my Peak, didn't have any issues. The one thing I have noticed is you can't crank it down that hard because you can snap the pin in the cam from too much pressure (I know from experience!). It holds well enough. I haven't done any major deer hair work where I need to put a ton of pressure on the hook - Brian Wise has been using the Jurassic jaws ( I think that's what they're called) from Peak and it looks like those would be sweet for big hooks. I've done hundreds and hundreds of 2/0 hooks on both my Peak and Anvil Atlas (it's now Wolff Indiana, not Anvil), and I have no *major* complaints *about the jaws*.
  7. Mistyped the web address... Here's the correct one: https://oklahomaflycompany.weebly.com And facebook: https://m.facebook.com/OKFlyCo-862832170470301/ And Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/okflyco/ Website is still under some work, and it doesn't work as well on a mobile phone. Consider it a work in progress that doesn't get a ton of attention.
  8. Hey all, A few years ago I started a fly tying company to jump in headfirst into the fly fishing industry. In the beginning, I refrained from sharing it on here to avoid clogging up the forum with my pointless pictures of flies. But I realized a few weeks ago that I still had not shared anything, and since I'm running a sale on streamers starting tomorrow, I figured now is as good a time as ever to loop you guys in. You may already know of Oklahoma Fly Company, or OKFlyCo for short, through social medias (Instagram and Facebook) - if not go check out my pages and give me a follow, or you can check out my website and prices at www.weebly.oklahomaflycompany.com. I added a few pictures of some of the recent orders I've had going out. Starting tomorrow and going through Saturday, 10/21, I'm running a special on streamers. Buy 5 streamers, get one free! No limit to how many - buy 5, get 1, buy 10, get 2, buy 20, get 4, and so on. For every 5 you buy you get one streamer free! Each set of 6 (5+1) must be the same pattern, but colors are your choice. If you're needing streamers for the Fall/Winter season, don't miss it. I tie on Gamkatsu, Partridge, and Ahrex hooks using the best natural and synthetic products on the market. And if you have any questions on any patterns or tying, feel free to shoot me a message. I owe my abilities to several guys who helped shape my tying, and I would love to be able to pass that along.
  9. Aaron, sent you a PM.
  10. That's a one off Musky fly, essentially just a double articulated Double Deceiver with beefed up hooks in the front and back and a 40mm Flymen shank in the middle. It came in around 10" - it's massive.
  11. Heres a few of what I've knocked out lately. Working out orders for a guy headed to Brazil later this year for a fly fishing trip!
  12. Yeah, there are a lot of guys that are excited about them, and for good reason. I've been holding off committing to them too much because they're still relatively new to the hook market. So far so good, but there are always kinks in every manufacturing process! I am actually a commercial tyer, so I can get my hooks straight from the source. As far as what shops are carrying Ahrex at this time, I'm not sure. Maybe Dally's in AR or Feather-Craft in St. Louis. They're so new that I'm not sure who would be carrying them.
  13. Since posting this over a year ago, I have bounced around between hook manufacturers. Ahrex is now a big one on the scene that I am really enjoying. As far as Partridge goes, I'ven had several issues with some of their hooks this summer (Stripers can straighten hooks out pretty quick if you're not careful!), and I'm not sure that I will keep tying with them after finishing out what stock I have left. Went back to Gamakatsu for several patterns. If you haven't tied with any Ahrex hooks, their light stinger hooks are really sticky, pretty similar to the B10S. In the end, I've realized that you should tie with what works for you as long as the hook does what it needs to!
  14. I tie on mostly the B10S as well, and really can't complain about it. In all the flies I've made with them, only two of them failed and they were on the same streamer. I've been asking quite a few guys, including Mike Schmidt, Brian Wise, and Pat Cohen, and everyone has a different opinion on what makes each hook better. It really came down to personal preference for most of them! I have had a few guys say they think the B10S holds better than a true bend hook like the Attitude, but no one really seems to have any real "proof."
  15. Has anyone seen any comparisons or reviews that are trying to give the pros and cons of these two manufacturers? I tie on mostly Gamakastu B10S for my streamers, but Partridge is starting to get really popular and makes a wide variety of hooks just like Gama. I've been searching but haven't found anything yet. What do you tie on (for streamers) and why?? Thanks!
  16. That's what I'm expecting as well. If and when I start dyeing it, I will post results on here!!
  17. I don't think I'll try to cut zonkers out of it, just squares for pieces of fur. I get all of my materials from Harlin already, but even at the discount I get rabbit zonkers are still cheaper and just as effective in my opinion. But for a collar or brush, fox tends to have more 'bulk'.
  18. That's the plan. I won't be dying all one color, that would be a waste!! Do you know a good source for RIT?
  19. Lancer, that's one of the ways I'm hoping to try and dye it. It's an all white pelt, so I would think it would dye well as well, but we will have to see. The pelt is a couple years old, and the seller is asking $80. She paid $130. At the moment, I see it as a worth while investment!
  20. I know that there are specific dyes for certain materials, but I didn't know chartreuse was a hard color! If I remember right, the dye for animals it RIT dye or something like that. I know of some guys using vinegar and Koolaid to dye feathers, but I don't know if there's a right or wrong for some kinds of material. Will do!
  21. It is just a white pelt, tail face and all. I'm hoping it will work out, but I trying to check around and make sure I'm not missing anything. I'm planning on trying to die some parts of it as well, so we will see what happens!
  22. Anyone ever purchased or have an arctic fox pelt they use for tying? I have a chance to buy a full pelt from Alaska, but I just wanted to check to see if there was anything I should look for. I've already checked all the regulations and I should be good to go. With as popular as Arctic fox fur is these days in fly tying, and as expensive as it can be, I was excited at having the chance at a full pelt. Any issues to look for? What should I expect to pay? Anyone tried to dye their own fox before? I'd love some advice!! ****I posted this in the fly tying forum as well, but I wanted to post here just in case someone outside of fly tying might have some insight!***
