I topwater fish every time I am out. spring thru. fall. senko or wacky rig the cold months. I was out today and caught 5 nice bass. one was a near 5 lb. I have a knack for topwater it seems. My buddy using the same lure/ line. Not one fish. I cant explain it but I am glad I seem to "have the knack"
I catch and release ALL fish. Maybe some day we will get to meet again. Perhaps the big ol hog might end up on the line of some little boy or girl. That to me is worth more than a fish fry. A quick picture and a thank you to the fish followed by a gentle release. PEOPLE THE THROW FISH INTO THE WATER HACK ME OFF.
Hitting Springfirld lake in the morning. If ya see me out there give me a wave or paddle on up and chat for a few. ( In search of that darn bass Dr. Evil )
Went out Monday after work and the topwater action was good once the sun went down. The senko rig again was a hit with the bass. Cant search for the dreaded bass Dr. Evil until friday
The top water action should be ramping up in a few weeks, once the water temp comes up. Killed them last year once the temp came up and the grass and lillies matured.
Yeah I was out there for a while. Saw two people in a flat bottom, musta been you folks. Went out this am before the rain hit. caught 5 on the senko set up. Frogs were not working today. Got skunked in them lillies BTW. Action was better along the rocks ner the dam. Dr. Evil is still at large.
As I am getting mrore frog time under my belt My hook up's are great. One a good day I might miss 1 out of every 10 since I switched to the smaller frogs, it dang near a fish every strike. I only see those trailer hooks a more of a snag risk. Using smaller bodied frogs and adjusting my hookset has worked great. How I set a frog hook goes like this. Once the bass strikes I count 1-2-3 and on 3 set the hook HARD. When I say hard I dont mean like I am trying to kill a grizzly bear by whipping him to death with a fishing rod hard. Use some commen sense here. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART--------> ONCE YOU SET THE HOOK, HOLD THE ROD THE END OF YOUR HOOKSET let the fish pull those hooks in deeper. Do this for only a second or two UNLESS YOU FEEL THE TENSION GO LIMP. This means the fish is running towards you DROP THE ROD TIP WHILE REELING LIKE MAD. Unless your in heavy cover, let the fish wear themself out before landing it. This is wear I screwed up and lost that big one. Theres my 2 cents worth
Well there I was, sitting in my kayak fishing in my favorite spot on springfield lake. The action was very slow been there 3 hours and only landed 4 bass. Then the wind kicked up and I decided to call it a day. As the wind was pushing towards my jeep, I see a patch of weeds that looked like a good spot for a bass to be. I launch my new pad crasher next to the target and begin my retrive. WHAM!!!!!! the fight was on. He jumped and my jaw hit the kayak floor. He was the biggest bass I ever had on the hook. After a long fight I reach down to pull the monster into the kayak. I thumb hook his lower jaw and he thrashes, setting the hook in my finger. he managed to do this at the same moment he unhooked himself and swam away. I am sure he would have been 6 pounds! I sat there in shock staring at the hook burried into my finger. After what seemed to be hours I managed to get the hook out ( burried that number 2 hook clear to the bend of the hook ) Oh well I'kk be back again in search of the bass I have named Dr. Evil
Well I went out today 5-28-13 and the bass were on FIRE If you're out on Springfield lake and see the kayak with the p-40 warhawk "shark teeth" on the front paddle over and say howdy.
The Bass were on FIRE today, 5-28-13 Topwater from dark-thirty am till 10am I had fish on almost all the way around the lake. My "honey hole" produced a 19 incher.
I myself catch a LOT of bass at a "SPOT" on Springfirld lake. Since I release all my fish I rarely give up my "Honey holes" I see to many beer swilling idiots out there, keeping fish that are NOT LEGAL SIZE. Besides that I like knowing I can paddle over there knowing I will catch fish every time. As far as color of frogs go buy the ones that look NATURAL how many friiggin pink, yellow, and purple frogs you see around here LOL. the retrive that works the best for me goes like this
Cast and let it SET STILL until the disturbed water calms. 2 or 3 Short, firm jerks. and pause for a couple of seconds ( frogs dont hydroplane on top of the water, they swim in it ) keep doing this until you get close to your kayak/boat/ etc. if your in the lilly pads and your frog scoots up on top of one STOP!!!!!!!! use very TINY jerks while on the lilly pad just enough to make the pad shake a little. Once your frog comes off the pad STOP AGAIN. My best bass have been caught as soon as it comes off the pad. There are some people the bend the frogs hooks up from the body a little to improve hook sets. YOU WILL LOSE MORE FROGS THIS WAY!!!!!!!!!!
For what it's worth, i use the smaller xpo frogs $3.99 at acadamy sports. I hook 'em dang near every strike. My reason for this, since they are a smeller frog the fish gets it in their mouth better. I am DONE with KVD, Spro. But if you must pay that kind of money for those oversized frogs, rub a bit of KVD fish sticks on it. They seem to hang on to it a bit longer.
