  1. Sounds like a great trip! I haven't floated past Round Spring in the past 2 years, because, I grown tired of those boaters. I have always loved the fishing on that stretch, so, maybe I'll have to just grit and bear with the boats next time. I never would have thought to throw a spinnerbait there, either. Glad it produced for you! IMO - Carr's is the best place to rent a canoe. I believe they have the best prices, and are better with customer service than some of the rest of the outfitters down there.
  2. Thanks, for all of the comments everyone! In the previous years we have done well in all sections. Maybe we were just lucky. @Born to Fish & go4ducks2 - I am not using anything special. I used iMovie on my iPad 2 to edit this video. I am in need of a computer upgrade, because, I want to be able to use some other editing software. iMovie is simple and is good enough for me in the meantime...but I know I will be wanting to do more in the near future. First song is from Django Unchined soundtrack - Brother Dege (AKA Dege Legg) - Too Old to Die Young Second Song is the theme song to Sons of Anarchy (Television show) - Curtis Stigers & The Forest Rangers - This Life
  3. Great pictures!
  4. Those are some great shots!
  5. Good stuff! Glad you were able to salvage the trip with all of that rain. I'll be making a trip up that way next year, and your post has me excited!
  6. darn, those are some beautiful hogs! Very nice!
  7. My best friend and I made our annual trip out to the Current last week (June 20 - 23rd), and had an awesome time. It was my first time fishing/floating Baptist to Cedar. I did notice that there were quite a few small browns (I just read that they were recently stocked on another thread). Overall the fishing was okay throughout the trip. Best fish of the trip IMO was the 17" brown my friend caught with his spinning gear. I so wish I could have hooked up with that with my fly rod. My best friend doesn't appreciate trout like I do. He's all for the smallies, but to each their own! We were a little dissappointed in the smallmouth fishing. They didn't seem as active as we are used to. This also was our first time floating in June. We usually float in mid July. So, maybe that had to be part of the issue. One of the coolest parts of the trip was a Bald Eagle that flew towards us and perched itself in a tree on the shore. It was so close to us, and then we got to see it take off up river. I wrote a little more on my blog www.thebarblessangler.com Here's a video I made of short clips and still shots from the trip. All fish were caught and happily released! Enjoy!
  8. Looks like a good time. The weedless jalapeno popper joke really got me. I'm still laughing! haha
  9. Loved the video! Can't wait to use my GoPro on my annual Current River trip this summer.
  10. Great report! Looks like an awesome time. Just like Justin Spencer and CNR said, I hope to be in as great shape to fish when I'm 89 years old, too. Thank you, for sharing!
  11. Thanks, guys! I'm glad you all enjoyed my post.
  12. My best friend and I only go down there once a year because It's an 8+ hour drive from Chicago. I wish it was only 2 hours. I'd be there all the time haha! Thank you! I am envious that you live down there, and don't have the long drive that I do. I wish the rivers, and forests up here by me looked half as good as the riverways by down there. Thank you, Gavin! I still smile when I see that picture. I was pretty excited that Orvis chose my picture to repost and share for their picture of the day one day on their facebook page. Hahaha I'll have to learn how to use those midges first. All my luck with those 3 trout have been on a white wooly bugger. I use those up here, too. I catch mixed bag of fish with it LMB, Smallies, Crappie, and other Pan fish. It produces extremely well for me. This fall I am going to try my luck when the steelhead run in wisconsin. Hopefully, I catch my first steelhead this year, too!
  13. Late post. Thought I would give you a report on my float trip July 12 - 15. We ended up floating Cedar Grove to Round Spring. The weather was beautiful all 4 days. The fishing was great for my friend who doesn't fly fish, and was using a spinning set up with a small jointed rapala. He was catching fish left and right. The smallies were loving the lure he was using. He even caught 2 smallies on the same lure...at the same time! It was pretty awesome to witness. He even caught his first trout, and missed 2 others. For me, I started off using flies I've never used before...such as prince nymphs, hares ears, and elk hair caddis. (I fish for bass.) I probably wasn't using the proper technique with these flies, but I'm sure with practice, and time I will get better. I wasn't attracting anything. So, after playing around with those flies, I decided to go to my old faithful...a wooly bugger. I tied on a white wooly bugger, and the fish started hitting. Large mouth, small mouth, and I finally caught my first rainbow trout! It was very exciting. At first I didn't know what I had hooked in to, as it got closer I saw that it was a trout. I jumped out of the canoe and landed it. I ended up catching 3 rainbow's the entire trip. 2 of them came about 1/4 a mile after the akers ferry landing. All fish were caught, and released. All in all it was a great trip. Caught a lot of fish, including our first trout. We saw more animal activity than we have in past trips...weasals, river otters, snapping turtles, snakes (corn snake and a water moccasin), and we even had a guy ride past our camp site on horseback. (He was going fishing.) The river otters were hilarious. There were 5 of them swimming and fussing around these rocks on the shore...I had my camera out ready to take a picture not paying full attention to them...well, 2 of them decided to check us out...They popped their heads out of the water right next to us in our canoe, and scared the hell out of me. hahaha I dropped the camera in the canoe, and didn't get a picture of them. It was hilarious. I could have put my hand on one of their heads they were so close. Okay that is all Here's a link to the full album of my trip if you would like to see. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Carf/Current%20River%202012/ My first trout My second Trout underwater My second trout underwater swimming away My best friend with an awesome Smallie A nice large mouth I caught
  14. I don't think I'll mind the dragging if the fishing is good. Thank you for the report, Bleeding Shiner! I have about 3 weeks until I make my trip down there....I'm excited!
  15. Thank you, for all the info, Gavin! It is greatly appreciated!
  16. How shallow....would we have to get out and pull the canoe? or would we be scraping the bottom constantly? I'm hoping to be past Akers at the end of the 2nd day (Which would be a Friday) I am familiar with all the float traffic the weekends bring, and it really didn't bother us the past 2 years. The only thing that has bothered us were the motor boats after Round Spring. So, as long as there are no motor boats I think we'll be good. ha We also just want to see a different part of the river. We've done Akers to Two Rivers the past 2 years, and I've always been curious about the northern part where the trout are.
  17. Thank you, for the info! I've never used an indicator while fly fishing. So, I will give that a try this week at a local pond to get used to it. I'll let my friend know that he can can trout with the small Rapala's he usually uses. So, you're saying the river is shallow on the upper part from Baptist to Akers? I think we'll be riding heavy because we'll be floating for 4 days. Yeah, I saw on the map that we would have to portage around the bridge at Cedargrove. Hopefully, by the time we go down there the river levels will be up a bit. We're planning to float July 12 - 15.
  18. I was wondering how the fishing is from Baptist to Akers... For the past 2 years my best friend and I have been doing a 4 day 3 night float from Akers to Two Rivers in July. We've been very successful fishing, and having a great time enjoying the beautiful current river. This year we're going to do the same 4 day float, but from Baptist to Round Spring...is it roughly the same distance? I know the upper part around Baptist is know for trout, but how is the smallie fishing there? Or other species... I fly fish and I'm happy catching anything, but my best friend uses a spinning rod and is really only targeting the small mouth. I've never caught a trout, but im hoping to catch one this year using all of the knowledge I've taken in from other posts on this site. (I primarily target bass) For my friend...what would you suggest he use with his spinning rod. Last year he was using a small jointed rapala, and had a lot of success. What else could he use? And do you think the smallie fishing will be good between baptist and round spring?
  19. Wow! That's a great looking smallie!
