    Interesting thought. There is a crawdad in the Niangua that has black stripes across it. I could see where a barred rabbit strip might mimic that. I see that you use a lot of bead chain rather than barbells. Bead chains don't offer much weight so how do you compensate?

    Upper Bull Shoals is another 8 miles and it has been producing. Time will tell what the water level is and how it affects the fishing there.

    I don't see that as a good reason. It isn't unusual in outdoor sports to hold off pulling the trigger until ID is definate. Why should a sport that is basically hunting get a bye? Problem is the game dictates that you have a crowd waiting and ready to have a fish fry, and today they are armed with cell phones. Or in some occasions you take out on private land.

    I guess when you have graduated from Bronson's, Langley's and JC Higgin's baitcasters to Curado's and Z's like I have you get a different perspective. While I'm not really in to spending a lot on spinning rods, baitcasters are a different animal to me and I love my Falcons. I'm sure there are others I could appreciate also that are in their class..

    Living in Rolla you're not all that far from the upper reaches of some pretty good rivers. Tryon was all over that area so you should get some help from 200 Adventures. Smallies don't always go that deep on our flows as long as they have some breaks in the current.

    It's all small water really, but it had some decent holes in it. If it were me I would be looking for places on the Big Blue out south.

    Not anything recent, but I've fished it hundreds of times. I lived on it a couple of years when I was in my early teens and hunted coons and fished it for years in later years. It may have changed, but I never caught any decent LM that far north. I would think it is someones backyard now. There were some decent fish and good holes in the Drexel area though. We always did better on the Blue then, but it was also out of town past 103rd then.

    I wouldn't argue that fact, but they also allow those who gig anything the ability to see in the deep holes where smallies winter. I supoose my thinking, and it is a guess, is that less light confines the gigging to shallow water that wintering smallies tend to avoid.

    Most consider baits that suspend as jerbaits. They aren't perfect because some suspend better than others and water temperature affects them all, but the goal is for them to hover at the depth where they are stopped. If you like Rapalas, the X Rap is a good jerkbait and seems to do as well as some of its more expensive competitors.

    It's all about limitations and that is why there are so many choices. I don't have a baitcasting outfit that cost me less than $200, but that's what my 60 years of experience with them tells me I need for my fishing. The biggest problem with going cheap is the same problem with buying a used truck, the cheaper you go the more bad ones you'll find. If I remember right you got your expensive baitcaster for free so you're hardly an expert on the price of baitcasting reels.

    Go long if you're going to be casting from it sitting. If you're going to be doing both sitting and standing a 7 1/2 or 8 will stay out of harms way in a short tandem canoe. I used Cabelas 50th glass rods last and I though they did well on the rivers. They're slow enough to push a bug, mend and at 7 1/2' they lay low in the boat.

    While my favorite rig is and always will be my baitcasters, I would suggest a spinning rod for you. It will give you a better drag and more line than your spincast rigs. They generally come with a spare spool and that will allow you to keep another line for different circumstances. There's a steep learning curve for baitcasters and a good reel will cost you all or most of your budget.

    You can get rack extensions that pull out allowing you to lift and place the nose of a craft on it. You then swing the stern on and slide the bow over. The point is you only lift half the weight. I have one and they work. I know Wrench has had his Guide a long time and it would be a good choice. You can solo or tandem and the price is right on them.

    You know you don't have to stand to fly fish from a boat. With a canoe you can cut your distance to something that doesn't require that you have a lot of line in the air. Obviously it's required if you are targeting fish, but for structure it's not necessary. Stability to stand is going to dictate that you have more weight.

    I fished the White above the James in the mid 50's, but we had just come from my first trip to Roaring River and after seeing all those fish there the White didn't impress me. :lol: I was in my early teens however and wish now I could go back.

    A weather radio is the way to go. Our sirens here can barely be heard inside, and you have to be awake. Our weather radio, a Midland, is set for Stone and Taney. The reason for Stone is that storms come from that direction and it gives us an early heads up.

    Like others have said a tandem canoe is the only reasonable choice. The make and hull design is a whole other story, given the fact you indicate no experience the field can be narrowed. My suggestion would be to find a good used Old Town Discovery 158 or 169, an Old town Guide 160 would work also. These are easy to sell if you decide you want something lighter and quicker later. Those two atributes come with some quirks that might make you uncomfortable if you're just starting out.

    Uh, I didn't call the sport stupid or agree with the post dedrading those that do, but you did. Truth is I don't think your uncle was stupid for gigging, after all it is perfectly legal, but maybe you see my point now. I think a group like this should be able to come up with better arguments to curtail ilegal gigging than simply calling the sport stupid and that it's practiced by undesirables. Justin I think the proposal to eliminate gigging in trophy areas could have merit.

    Maybe you should consider renting for a year and then compare cost. I'm assuming that you can rent a bass boat on LOZ. FishinWrench on this forum would likely know if and where. Of course you can rent on Taney and the boats available are well suited to the lake.
