  1. MTM is right and their are to many misconceptions about the timber industry, many are outright wrong and the green groups know it. Al its flat wrong that timber companies leave brush scattered through the forest, and it wrong that there is no market for small timber, in fact it can be quite profitable. At least his is the way it was in Oregon. The problem is that each FS district has its own concepts and every Cruiser has his ideas of the interpretations. It wasn't timber companies who decided to clear cut, they don't decide where roads will be, they don't decide which trees will be cut, or how the land will be left. They simply bid on the timber and their bid is based on what it cost to cut it, transport it, and clean up after. Clear cutting brought the highest dollar to the FS because it was the most economical way to cut it. Roads are cheaper than choppers. The real culprit is the mandate for the FS to make money from our forest. This wasn't something necessarily that the public wanted, it was money congress wanted to spend.
  2. I believe that the Ponderosa needs fire to open its seeds, I'm sure there are others. If one walks through a Western Pine Forest to any extent, its not hard to understand why they need the opportunity to burn the brush off the forest floor. I've seen areas where a fire has gone through and killed very few trees, because the bark has a lot of fire Resistance. It will then be years before the threat from below can regenerate.
  3. Tim, how long are the ones you fish?
  4. Red and Ginger have been most reliable for me, but not my favorite fly.
  5. There are some good looking streams there, on a side note, I don't think they open until July. You're also within easy striking distance of the Henry's Fork and the Railroad Ranch.
  6. Snagg most of the popular section of the park doesn't show too many scars, or at least thats was my opinion. My fear would be if it blows!
  7. Christiana, where are you fishing out of, and do you have any preference, I.E Smallies vs Largemouth?
  8. I see the railroad station, but I couldn't see anything on Hamburger Hill that I recognized.
  9. Good grief guys, I didn't say anything about whether he should keep the lake, or even the general area a secret, I simply said that, for his own benefit, he might not want to be that specific. Bull Creek is a big cove, but it ain't that big and the cover is pretty obvious. There are a lot of people reading these and giving out information is fine, but people shouldn't require specific directions. Its not done on TR reports, even though its much larger. I just thought Hunter deserved a warning, so that he doesn't find himself crowded out of his hard earned success by someone who gained it via the net.
  10. Take a little hint from an oldtimer. This will come back to haunt you. I HAVE BEEN FISHING AROUND BULL CREEK AND BEEN KILLIN' THE BASS!!!! Now BEEN FISHING THE LOWER PART OF TANEY should be enough for anyone seeking information, and won't have you finding a crowd at your local "Honey Hole". If someone wants information, and its sent PM, then the 80 people that have viewed this thread won't beat you to the area.
  11. I suppose that there is a lesson here for all states, if this was crminial by statue, it would be addressed a lot sooner.
  12. Se-cret = Kept hidden from knowledge or view; concealed.
  13. I have an Orvis 10' 5wt, thats perfect for "High Sticking" in the Rebar hole, and its effective and fun.
  14. If you're going to cook, the area north of the whistle might be the best spot. It doesn't seem to be as busy as the Spring area, probably because it cost more. It has better bathrooms too.
  15. Depending on the number of people, meeting at the lodge for breakfast could be another option.
  16. The weather is turning in your favor, you should have a good trip. Good Luck
  17. There's a lot of room in the picnic area north of the whistle, and the parking lot by the swimming pool is generally wide open.
  18. That might work for me, but I won't know until its very close.
  19. Like at the hatchery outlet at the dam, or the whistle bridge?
  20. This a common point brought up often, but one I find doesn't hold up in practice. I have both, and except for a little protection from the wind, I get wet from paddle drip in both. You can put a skirt on the sit in, but that won't protect you from hypothermia if you get dunked, so a dry suit or waders and a dry top are pretty much mandatory when the water turns cold. The sit ins are cheaper, lighter, and in some circumstances easier to get out of, plus most are a little more maneuverable. The sit on tops are virtually unsinkable, have more room to carry stuff and it can be reached, something not possible in a SIT. They are however heavier and more expensive in comparison. Anything worth fishing out of should have a lot of secondary stability.
  21. I might try to make that also, but I think C&R season would be more enjoyable.
  22. KC I don't know exactly what one would call the "Lower" Niangua, but I always think of it as below Prosperine, which is where the cold water tends to run out. Others may have a different idea of what it is. Other terms are "Above" and "Below", which refers to the spring branch or Bennett. A major problem with floating much of the area below Bennett is that the accesses tend to be on opposites sides, and 64 is the only road that crosses it, making shuttles long.
  23. This is part of the biology of that area, its really not part of Bennett, and neither are Trout. Lets face it, the guts are garbage.
  24. Shorty's does have good ribs, but next time go down the road a little to Danna's. I don't think you'll be sorry.
  25. Snagged, you should get your dad down to Roaring River, daughter too, its virtualy all bank fishing.
