  1. Update 4/20- The upper White is clearing and falling rapidly. The influx of mud must have been from ditches on dirt roads flooded by the sudden downpour. Should be great conditions by tomorrow unless more rain falls.
  2. A few hours ago it rained about one inch in about 30 minutes at Elkins, and maybe more up the White River. More messed up conditions coming for at least a few days. The river already rose about six inches in the first hour after the rain and usually takes several hours to crest. It also quickly became chocolate milk colored. This morning there was almost two feet of visibility.
  3. We spent some time at Monte Ne the summer before the lake completely filled. The lake was only out to the mouth of Monte Ne Creek. There was a very clear and cold spring fed pool that the bridge ran over. I wonder if that spring is still active? It was kind of pretty but not hugely impressive. We sat on some of the concrete couches around the pool. There are some good pics on the Shiloh Museum website.
  4. The upper White watershed extends from 4 miles east of Pettigrew along Hwy 16 east then west to just southwest of Winslow along Hwy 71, and also includes most of south Fayetteville. That does not include the Richland Creek and War Eagle watersheds, which contribute significantly to Beaver Lake. With the expected lake rise, the shoals right below 45 Bridge should be lake water.
  5. 1092 back in 1977. 1105.3 in March 2006.
  6. Upper white at Elkins is moderately muddy and about 16 inches above what it was pre-rain. By Thursday, with no more rain, conditions should improve enough for good fishing. It has dropped significantly already.
  7. There are lots of boulders like that from about Ventris on down towards the dam, and around the center of Horseshoe Bend. I remember someone hitting the one out from Rocky Branch Marina at planing speed at night. Ugly sound! From LaRue on to just past Rocky Branch is a particularly hazardous area.
  8. Everything is late this spring. Daffodils bloomed two weeks later than normal. I have seen the run extend into early May a few times. One year many years ago the temperature in Beaver mid lake did not reach 60 until the first of May. I think the wb run is just late.
  9. I was about halfway between Twin and Wyman yesterday afternoon. Only caught one wb, a male. Water visibility was about 20 inches. Maybe too many large motors are stirring up the bottom around Twin.
  10. I went back up there today and caught four more. All males about 11-12 inches. Haven't seen a single female yet. All four were caught in fast moving water less than two feet deep over rocky bottoms.
  11. I guess you could, but it is a no wake (5 mph) lake. The shoals are about a foot deep now.
  12. Float down from private access at 74 bridge hole, take out at boat ramp. Long tiring paddle down the river and through the lake especially if it is windy. Too swift to paddle back up and rocks too slick and too many logs to wade and drag back up. Too shallow to come up river from the ramp unless you use a mud motor.

    Drum today

That is a nice one, but they get much bigger. I would not be surprised to see a 25+ pound drum from Beaver.
  17. Not in Beaver, but in its watershed. Today, I managed nine decent white bass a few pools above where Lake Sequoyah begins to back up. Water temp 60 deg and fairly clear. Caught all but one on the smallest Panfish Assassin shad tails in silvery white on 1/16 and 1/32 oz white jig heads. Yes, there is a white bass run up out of Sequoyah.
  18. I saw rock break off that bluff and fall into Richland a couple weeks ago.
  19. When I was in high school over 40 years ago, it seemed that about half the boys fished regularly. I bet it is far less now.
  20. Seems I hardly ever see someone fishing who looks under 35 years old.
  21. Pumpkinseed sunfish won't leave the tiny shad types alone. I caught 4 Thursday in the river and had a strike from one it seemed every other cast. I think others have been bothered with them too.
  22. I was fishing for white bass in the upper White above twin bridges on Thursday. My jig got snagged a little, and I pulled up some monofilament. I don't leave that junk in the water. I pulled it free of the snags, and there was a pretty good crankbait on the end. It was a 4" Lucky Craft Pointer Minnow. I looked it up and about $17 retail value. That's the most expensive lure I have ever found. I guess most people find tackle. I once found a sealed six gallon metal gas tank floating in the same river. Any others want to share?
  23. Drum have a very firm meat with large flakes. Almost the consistency of shrimp. Rather strong flavor. I don't enjoy eating it very much.
  24. This cold snap might set things back a few days. River temps have dropped significantly.
  25. You guys must be exceptional. I have trouble catching more than one or two crappie per trip from Beaver.
