  1. When you guys say super glue, what brand do you mean? The stuff I use for household repairs dries in seconds. As slow as I tie, I don't think I could make it work.
  2. That's really neat. My daughter has a dance recital that day, so we'll have to wait until 2008. Here a question for all the dads and grandpas--how young did you start your kids fly fishing?
  3. Good tips. Thanks Steve
  4. Unlike Norman Maclean, none of us were born w/ fly rods in our hands. I had a Daiwa silvercast with a 4.5 foot rod. It's hanging on the wall of my bedroom at my parents house. That's one thing I love about this forum--we remember out roots. Makes us better fisherman, I think.
  5. Same here. I haven't used Gulp, though, but I have some pb that's probably more than 5 years old in my garage and it's still "flavorful" (ie stanky!)
  6. That is affordable. How hard is it to build a rod? Have you ever done it, Terry?
  7. The couple I've been to in Spfd and Republic don't.
  8. Steve, can you tell us about the family? I went to college w/ Howie's from Arkansas, who were fly fisherman, so I can only assume they are related. They were twins and one was named Roger and for the life of me I can't remember the other. It's been driving me nuts for weeks. I wish I could have joined in, but have other obligations. As the father of 2 small daughters, I think it's great you guys are all getting involved.
  9. How sad is that?
  10. So where can I get one of these in Springberg. I looked at bass pro (I remember them a long time ago.) Any other ideas? I hate buying stuff online.... btw, I had a pflueger 1595 on a St. Croix Imperial and I love both. Do you think this type of combe would be good for a kid/beginner?
  11. If I remember right, there is a huge striper mounted in the gas station in Kirbyville that came from the upper end of the lake in the 80s. Aren't the trout in the upper end just wash overs from Taney or are they stocked? I agree w/ Wayne about water levels. I think the corp needs to try hard to regulate the levels of the lakes to make sure good spawns happen, esp. w/ the drought conditions we've had the last few years.
  12. I dunno. Seems like the action would be a little fast for my tastes.
  13. CC, I'd like to see this behemoth. It sounds pretty cool. You wouldn't thinking some of these soft plastic "creature baits" like a hula grub would catch a fish, but they do. I'd wondered about how to go about tying something that big. I would think something like that would be really good at night, too, when the really big fish come out. Leonard, thanks for that link. I'm on that site a lot and I don't think it's ever dawned on me. I tie the hackle in last ::doh!!:: instead of first. Plus, especially in those smaller sizes, I'm not leaving enough room for hackle and the finish. I think tying in the hackle first would help that. BTW, I'm still waiting on the pine squirrel instructions....
  14. Leonard--that looks good to me. Do you remember what size it was. Dano--that's very helpful to me. A lot of the tying instructions kind of skip over that step and and say something to the effect of "tie in your hackle...". I need to take another class to sharpen my skills. Though I must say I've seen some improvement in the last few weeks, though they are far from good. The last class I took was from Backcountry, probably in '93. I've a couple soft hackles that turned out ok using what looks like an Indian Saddle Patch (see pic) since I started this thread. I need to post some pics to get more feedback. One think I noticed was hook size had a lot to do w/ my quality. I put just a random big hook in the vice to practice a few hackles on and they turned out nice, but once I put the 12s and 16s back in the vice, not so good. I think the tip of tearing off one side will help.
  15. So when do we get to see it? This has been a very cool thread, btw. One of the many reasons I read this board every day.
  16. Thanks, that's a good tip.
  17. Thanks, Steve. I'm glad you found the thread. Given your background, I knew you'd have some good info. My materials are nasty--half of which are still coming from the tying kit I found at a garage sale 15 years ago. I think it was probably 15 yrs old when I found it. But I really liked the pattern--seemed like a simple, buggy looking fly no matter what the materials. I'd be curious what other aussie/uk patterns we should be taking advantage of around here.
  18. Nice! I like both. Why do you like the smaller one better?
  19. Good tip, Steve. I thought the "expert" was talking out of the wrong hole. Ive been meaning to try a dubbing loop. Seems like a good technique. Does it hide the thread, well. I'm sure the answer is yes, otherwise we would do it.
  20. Sounds like some of my students. "Oh, your grandmother died again! How hard that must be on your family!"
  21. I heard a guy at a shop recently scoff "no one uses dubbing wax anymore...." Well, I have "waxed" thread, but I can't get my dubbing to stick without winding tighter than a cheap Dominican cigar. Plus, my 30 year old chunk of dubbing wax is as dry as a hockey puck. Thought about using my daughters glue stick, but haven't yet. What's the best way to go about it. I'm using Ultra Thread 140 denier. Thanks
  22. It's a pretty heavy-duty stand rated to hold a 100 pound monitor. And it's got rubber feet, so it doesn't slide. I'd been looking all over the web for plans and saving pictures from catalogs, but couldn't find the time to build one, so I did this instead. Took longer to warm up the hot glue gun than anything else. I'd like to see your bench, jOrOb, because I'd still like to make one or add some features to my monitor stand.
  23. That's kind of like asking "what's in sausage?" I probably don't want to know. My wife made try a "fried shrimp ball" at the buffet. I suggested they change the name to "fried bait ball." No so good.....
  24. Thanks, Gavin. So here is what I used. Obviously not right in retrospect, but what are these used for. I have them died in several color. They don't seem stiff enough to use for a dry and don't really give a bugger the right action.
  25. Can you guys post some pictures? I'd be curious to see what these different flies look like.
