  1. I have tied them too with all types of wires. They do work, but not like the ones that actually have the wire spaced to create the right segmentations. The only wire that I have found to really be effective is the gold wire. Tying it like a brassie and then throwing on the collar of partridge. I think that the benefit with wire is the fly will sink a lot faster than the normal ones which is what you are trying to accomplish with this pattern. You want these to sink to the bottom before your presentation is even started. If you really get this pattern emerging right you will hook up more of the time than just casting these out and striping them in. I seen it done both ways, but more importantly is to make the presentation look how the "TROUT" see it not how the fisherman does. Also to fish these real effectively is to fish slack water with little current just enough to move your line down stream. And if you are fishing these in chop water or even fast water your chances of hooking up a lot are slim to none. The fish can't really see them as much because the current is to fast for how small the fly is you are fishing looks to the trout. The other reason is that chop creates to much disturbance on or just under column that you fly gets hidden in all that. So it makes it harder for the fish to see it. I hope this helps some of you on the next time you fish soft hackles.
  2. Febuary 24th 2006 Finally went fishing at Taneycomo for the first time in a while. I went with Levi from my tying class. He is kind of new to the sport so I figured I would get him out there and do some exploring. I didn’t really know what to do though because it seems like forever that I was down there. I kind of felt like I was on a different stretch of water because of how long it’s been that I fished up at the dam. We started fishing around 1pm at the public boat ramp. I took my pontoon boat so I could row around and scope out and see if I could spot any big fish. My buddy didn’t have one so he had to wade. He adjusted well to the conditions we had considering the wind along with the 15mph gust that came throughout the day. I thought he might have some problems with that, but he did well casting in the wind. Once we got situated out in the current we started fishing dries. Something about the wind chop told me that big dries were going to do the trick. I tied Levi on a size twelve crackleback with an orange underbody. The hackle was brown (furnace) and it was tied with the hackle being a few more turns than the normal ones you see. I really wanted mine to site hi on the water because of the windy conditions we had I didn’t want to take the chance trying to locate my fly all day in the chop. Once you lose it, it is sometimes hard to relocate it after the cast. So I didn’t want to recast all day trying to find the fly again on the next cast. I’m sure this happens to people who fish dries. It can be frustrating too. I tied on a BIG dry. It is one that use on the White River when I’m fishing the fast riffles down in the trophy area at Rim Shoals. It’s kind of fun to test things that you wouldn’t think about fishing in the winter that you normally only fish in the summer and it actually produces some fish. I knew I could see it and that was the key for me. Trying to use the wind chop to my advantage and see if I can make the fly dance. Levi was catching fish on all the flies I gave him to use. He first started fishing the crackleback as a dry and wasn’t hooking up at all. Then I told him next time he cast to sink the fly to get it wet and start striping it fast. When he started doing that he was hooking up with some rainbows. I think the reason why it didn’t work in the stretch of water we were fishing because the current was to fast in the center on the river. When I saw him doing well then I went ahead and fished the banks with mine. I knew that if I wanted the trout to see it I had to get in some calmer water if I had any chance fishing it as a dry, but still wanted it to have some chop. I was trying to find some overhanging tree’s with some structure to the water I was fishing. I caught a lot of fish today considering the conditions we had to face. There is one fish I caught that will always be a memory. I caught a rainbow that was probably close to 20 inches and the take is one of those ones that you will always remember. That fish didn’t just sip it and go down slow. It almost came out of the water. I thought it was cool for being my first time out in a while. We did try to fish some other flies, but we keep going back to the dry fly bite. Levi was throwing about a size 16 gold bead head with some olive dubbing for the body and he ties a little strand of marabou for the tail to match the body. I never fish olive because I just don’t have to much luck with it, but after seeing Levi fishing it I might have to start. I fished a brown San Juan tied on a straight shank hook in a size 16 TMC 3769. Throwing a number eight split shot about twelve inches away from the fly. My indicator was probably five feet away from the split. He water I was normally fishing in was about three to five feet. The fish were holding in the deeper water it seems like until the wind laid down closer to dark. Then they were midging like crazy. I started fishing the shallows with a size 20 zebra midge in black with a copper bead and Levi threw a RS2 that we tied in class this week. All in all we had luck on most of everything we did today. People were catching fish as well so I would say it was a good day for everybody.
  3. Brian, To be honest with you, I have my best luck with it in the secret hole. Over by Jody's house after a rain when it floods.. You have been there with me. On the other hand. I will tell you that when the shad are running thru the dam, this is a fly you must have to fish the deeper water column. I like to have all different wighted ones. A top water, Subsurface, middle of the water, and the bottom in the deep holes. Make sure you go heavy on the tippet and keep a short leader and tppet. To much length will create a nice knot in the back of the head Night Fishing This can be a very effective fly at night when there's a moon. I have my best luck sripping longer strips when pulling in the slack line. Make sure you are stripping slow. I have found that the majority of the time they like presentation's slower.
  4. Seth, I tie them for Phil and you really don't need to get to worried about the body. If you do want to add to make the fly become more of a larger body. All you need to is put some dubbing under the body and then wrap up the herl. I cut the back's of all mine as well. Try this, Tie in two pieces of the ostrich and wrap them up side by side. Also try using two different colors and see what happens. Good luck JH
  5. GSP is great for egg patterns. As for deer hair work, it is not that good because of the strength that it will allow you to use. You will find yourself cutting thru the deer hair if you don't know how much tension to use when stakin or spinning the hair. And it is all due to the smaller sized thread. It will cut it like a knife. Whatever you do, make sure you don't use the smaller GSP in the denier. They make three sizes 50,100, and 200. The 200 works great for deer hair work. My favorite style of thread to use for deer hair work would be FLY MASTER PLUS+. JH
  6. That's a nice pttern.Thanx for posting it. I'm sure alot of people will appreciate that step (trick). I hope to meet you in the future. JH
  7. I have not heard of that pattern. See if you can tell me what the recipe is and we can try to get it up. I can call the shop who carries it and ask how to tie it. Then we can post it. Let me know. JH
  8. Hey Dave, I'm glad you like it. It will alwasye be an on-going thing, but we will be putting more up all the time. Hope to see you in class and i think you will like it.Jh
  9. Welcome Drew, If you ever get to Lilley's on a Tuesday.Come by the class and we can shake hands.
  10. Well Dave, you did it. you finally broke thru to the otherside. Welcome and give me a call. I"ll be your wingman anytime. JH
  11. Welcome, If you ever get up on a Tuesday, come check out our tying class.
  12. Well, those are some great patterns. We will see what we can do. I will be working with Phil tomorrow and we will be getting some more flies tied and posted. I think you guy's will like what we out up so until then i will just have to keep you guessing. JH
  13. Hey Dano, We have it on here already. If there is another one you have in mind, let us know and we will see what we can do. Cya
  14. I think we have a leach on the recipe page. The only thing I did was put two colors together and wove them. It is called a woven mohair leach. You should come to class. We would love to have you there. Cya in the future.
  15. Here is one I found that will give you the recipe also. Type in google and you will find tons of them. http://www.frontrangeanglers.com/flytying/...wnbrattWD40.htm
  16. I would love to show anybody how to tie this fly. If anybody comes to class I can show you how to do this after the class is done. I have tie probably 10,000 of these over the years of tying. Once you get the hang of it, it's easy. I also know that if you are buying those loose feathers they sell in a package, you are not getting the right feathers. The only way to get the right feathers is buying a grade 1 hungarian partridge bird. They retail for about 20 dollars. The ones that you want to select are the ones closer to the face. I hope this kind of helps you. Good luck

    Leaches

That is true about the leech, most patterns that are leech patterns, there will be mohair involved. A leech pattern can really be any fly that is a streamer type fly that is fished in the middle of the water column. Wooly's do the same thing that a leech is suppose to imitate. Some people like to fish these with a sinking line and fishing them close to the bottom. They both are effective ways to catch trout.
  18. To answer the question about more patterns, Yes we will be adding more soon. Next week on Tuesday we will be doing just that. I don't know how many patterns we will add, But slowly but surely we will get as many as we can on here. If anybody has a pattern they would like on the forum let me know and we will post it. I know somebody ask about a stimulater so I will get that on here next time we take pictures. I really would like to have feedback on fly tying patterns if you would like to know how to tie them I would like to post them for you. Jeremy
  19. Hello Everyone, Just wanted to let everyone know that classes are starting back up at Lilley's Landing. I am back and ready to teach some new patterns for the up- coming season on our tailwaters. Hope to see everyone there. And new faces are always welcome. If you have any question about class you can e-mail me direct at jeremy@taneycomotrout.com A little about the fishing in Belize. Did not get much fishing in. It was raining the first three days that I was down there, but all in all had a great time. Saw alot of Central America and got to see alot of cool things. I did fish two days I was there and caught Barracuda on the fly. The season was a little slow for bonefish. I was also hunting for Tarpon and no such luck. There is just so much water to fish in and it was hard to locate fish when you have never been there and all the guides are bait fisherman. I plan on going back because I know it is un-touched water and there are fish holding. I just need to spend more time down there and I think that it will be a number one hot spot for fly fishing. JH
  20. Hey Brian, I wish I could be there to help, But I can't . I will Be in Belize. I guess I can pick some trash up over their. From what I hear they need some clean up to. When I pick up that trash I will think about you. It's morning time at the hotel room and we are about to take a shuttle over to the DFW. I'm just waiting for the time to take off. We should arive in Belize around 4pm. Cya guys. Jeremy
  21. Hello, To my fellow fly tyers in class. I will be in Belize for the next two tuesday's on a job interview guiding for four months in the winter starting next year if I land the job. This all came about last year when I was tying at the conclave. I met a guy by the name of Charles that is a close friend of Eric Schmuecker's, who is one of the four son's of Wapsi. For those who don't know Eric, let me tell you what he does for the tying world. He is in charge of all the dubbing that goes out of Wapsi. They say that every fly ever tied in the world right now, something from that fly came from the Wapsi plant. That is crazy if you think about it. Go check it out . www.wapsifly.com . So anyways, Charles was staying at Eric's while he was in town and I was at Eric's house every night after the conclave eating and just hanging out. Charles and I started talking about the river and how the fishing was doing at Rim Shoals. I told him that if he had some extra days after the show that I would take him fishing. He said he could make that work so the next thing you know were off fishing . I guess that is the day that made him believe in me or just the fact that he had this idea in his head , but did not tell me about it until about a week ago. Him and some other investors are building a new resort/guide service on this stretch of water that his holding bonefish like crazy. So he invited me to go and met the gang and see what I thought about the property and what they have going on with the fly fishing. We are fishing four out of the eight days we will be there so I will be able to tell you all about it when I get back. I hope to take some great pictures and have some nice bonefish to show you. Who knows we might even catch some permit. That would be a blast on a fly. I don't even know what to bring so I guess I will be bringing my vise and all the saltwater patterns that I have. Wish me luck and for all the student's from class. I will bring you back something from Belize. Jeremy H
  22. Brain, What will we be tying. That's a good question. I think we are going tie those new kits that Wapsi came out with this year in their catalog. It's a secret. All I can tell you that if you show up for class you will find out. Jeremy
  23. Hello fly fisher's, I guess it’s about time I introduced my self on here to. Some of you now me, but a lot of you probably don’t so I would like to tell you how I got into the fly-fishing and maybe when I get done you will probably laugh at how I caught my first trout. I grew up in Texas until I was eighteen then moved to Branson, Mo. To make a long story short, When I was about two years old I started fishing. My dad had a lake house at lake Tawakoni in Wills Point, Texas. He was a great bass fisherman and was able to fish with a lot of the guy’s on the circuit when he was growing up. He told me a lot of stories. I really looked up to my father like most boy’s do and that was all it took. I wanted to go fishing as much as I could and that is exactly what my brother and I did growing up. Wherever we could find a pond or lake we fished it. I love throwing plastic worms. That seem to be what I was good at when I was fishing for bass. We grew up in Duncanville, TX until we were eleven and while we were there we got to see them build Joe Pool Lake. Also my dad knew that they were building a new lake not to far from where our lake house on Lake Tawakoni. And the new lake they were building was Lake Fork. It didn’t take my dad long to go fish that lake. We had a place there on opening day and got to fish it all the time. My dad got me and my brother a little bass boat with only a trolling motor on it. We were not to leave the cove that we live on , but at ten years old I thought it was pretty cool to have our own little boat that we could just go get in and fish the cove whenever we wanting. I knew then I was hooked on fishing in general. My brother kind of grew out of it and I just kept growing in it. All I can tell you is I had to have my own tackle box, fishing pole, when I went fishing and all I wanted to do was figure out how to catch fish and improve my game. So when I moved up to Branson, Mo. at the age of eighteen with the family. We lived on the river and I didn’t even know there was trout behind me the first year I lived there. I never really heard about them growing up because we did not have any trout streams by us and my dad never mentioned trout fishing to us growing up. I must have lived in Branson for a year or two before I even picked up the sport, but once I did I never used conventional tackle again. I still love to catch warm water fish especially bass. How can you not like those big eyes and mouth when you go to pull one up. I Just couldn’t believe that you could catch so many trout in a single day and I guess that was the turning point for me. And the fact that it was something new and different was just what I was looking for. One of my goals is to catch as many species of fish on the fly rod. And tie as many patterns as I can. I like tying just as much as I like fishing. I really have respect for tyers. There is alot that goes into learning how to tie flies and it is just has hard as learning the other half. Ok. Are you ready for my story on how I caught my first trout. I was standing in the chute. The water was off so I had to wade out a little bit and at that time I had the Wal-Mart waders for about seven dollars. The one’s that you had to wear you’re tennis shoes with. My feet were cold and I just didn’t know anything I was doing. I didn’t even catch my first trout on a fly rod. I caught mine on a Zebco 333. The funny part about all this was that Brad Wright saw all this take place and if any of you know Brad then you can only guess what he was thinking. I bought some flies at Wal-Mart and didn’t know what any of them did or how to fish them. All I knew was by looking at what people were doing at the chute. I knew they were using indicators and some split shot fishing scuds. I tied on a fly called the Humphy and put some split shot. Not knowing what I was doing at the time, I flipped it in the chute and saw the trout swim over take the dry as a wet. Next thing you know I had my first trout. It’s funny to think about how I caught it because all I was trying to do was figure it out and sure enough I did that day. The rest is history. I now eat, breathe and sleep this sport. If I am not tying for a shop, then I am guiding, teaching, or writing something down about fly fishing. I am lucky that I can do this because I don’t ever want to see my self do anything else, but keep progressing and sharing what I learned about the sport. I truly love this sport and want to share it with the world. That’s probably enough about me. Good luck on your journey in the sport and if you ever have a question or a story to share I would love to hear about it. Jeremy Hunt AKA flytiehunt
  24. Hello everyone, You know you guy's make all this possible. With out you being at class , there would be no class. To answer your question on the classes going thru summer. Yes, but you will need to check just to make sure. Sometime things come up from time to time and we might not have class that week. So always feel free to call the office and ask, or just give us a shout on here and we will be glad to let you know. My goal is to get as many people excited about tying as I do. It is alot of fun and I would show anyone willing to learn. That just gets me fired up and then I just want to share as much as I can to get you going in your tying world. I am still learning and that's the fun part. You will never know it all and that's what keeps me going in the sport. I want to do as much as I can in this sport whether it's fishing are tying as long as it's fly fishing. I hope to see more of you in the class and I would love to see everyone show up at once. That would be an exciting class. We are going on our third year and it is always fun to get new tyers in the class.
  25. Thank you loo10. I am glad you like it. This pattern would have to be one of my "go to" fly patterns. I can always count on this fly in hard times. Not only that , but it as bailed me out on many days that I thought I was going to get skunked on the river. and even the new one that I have gone to.
