Wow J-Doc. When I first move here 3 years ago you sent me my OAF sticker and were so proud of your restored boat and then your new ranger and then your electronics that you mastered. What happened? I was turned off last year when the high water kept me from my boat all summer but got the fever again when I killed the stripers all winter. Just go out and have fun on the water. Catching fish is a bonus. Hope you find it again, miss your threads. ( and golf will drive you crazy)
Amen to not needing to keep 100's of white bass. In my past "yankee" life there would be annual spring white bass runs in many rivers. The slaughter was a horror to watch as you would find shores littered with white bass killed but never filleted. I have never found such a concentration of whites here but I'm sure it happens. My concern on the removal of size limit on spots is that many small LM get kept. I think it is easier to tell a small striper from a white bass than to tell a spot from a LM. JMO. I like to eat fish but do return all bass.
I've noticed this year, several small tournaments having their weigh-in near the Rt. 12 ramp. I have found many dead bass floating around our boat dock in the nearby cove.
Just sayn'
How did we get here on a night light thread? Sorry.
got out early by 5:30 this morning. Had a good top water bite on spots and whites on the up side of 12 bridge and north end of the sandbar. caught them on a whopper popper #90. Whites are running large for me this spring but have a hard time getting more than one in a spot. They would surface for 30 seconds and be gone. Happened about 8 times. Tried spooning them but no luck. Trolled Bear island and got 3 14" bass on chrome flicker shad. 30 fow 1.5 mph. Saw zero shad balls. In at 9. Anybody fishing?
This really is what we are on the Earth to do. Make someone elses life better. I salute you Max. I hope this makes us all think on what we could do too.
Out at 6am with mist/drizzle. WT 76 Fished main lake points w/ ned south of bridge. 3 really nice largemouth, 21/2-3#'s and a nice 4#er. Also a nice cat around 7# and my 1st Beaver Lake sheephead about 5#. Busy day so in at 9am. Saw 1 other boat on the sandbar. Sun broke through as I came in. Great morning!
Mike, I've been sitting in 25-30 fow and getting bit from shore to about halfway back. Probably 6-15 fow. I'm going to try deeper as it has slowed down with 70+ wt. Nothing different on smallmouth technique except more of a point area. Just seem to be more of them and a few less spots. Works for me.
Got out this morning to flat calm. Thought the Lake people had finally heard our concerns as there was a "NO WAKE" bouy at the head of our cove. Came to find out it was just a runaway and is now washed up on shore at Serenity Point. Any way there was lots of top water activity on the sand bar but I could not get bit. Frustrating as I was right among the froth and could find nothing they wanted. Don't know if was whites or spots. Worked a couple banks with Ned and wound up with 4 keepers, 2 shorts and a crappie. In at 10am. Have any of you been catching more smallmouths than last year? I've targeted bass all month and have caught about 25% smallmouth. Way more than last 2 years (about 5%) Any one else noticed this? Might be the different technique.
WT 71-75
Out early today. Did well on Rt 12 sandbar with schooling spots. Really tore up a Pop R. Headed to PC through the fog. Was very erie to see 150 boats floating around waiting to be released. Props to the officials as it would have been really dangerous to try and start in the fog. They finally got out around 8:30. Caught a few more bass but my Ned bite was off today. WT still 65-67.
Started a little late with the downpour. Fished 6:30 till 11. Of course caught the tale end of the white bass frenzy again. Two nice ones in 1st 3 casts and they were done. The wind calmed down so I went to my Ned bank and was not disappointed. 7 solid keepers including an 18" smallie and a 19" LM. Had two other smallies throw me. Zero short bass this morning. Could not get a bite on buzz or spook. I thought the overcast would keep things going but no bites after 10am. I did keep a half dozen big Green Sunfiish with the whites for dinner. Rain kept the traffic down to nothing. 1 other bank beater and a Guide boat. WT still 66-68.
Always used the double uni but have tried and liked another knot. Don't know the name but learned it from a Shaw Grigsby you tube. It makes a smaller knot going through the guides. It involves a clinch knot. Easy to tie and holds fine.
Stump, I've caught 4 eyes this year, all just short of being dinner. No pattern at all. 2 on a Ned, one on a spinnerbait, and one on a 3" grub. All mid-day in less than 10 fow.
A question for you Ned experts. I've been having some luck with Dave's jigs most of the spring. My question is: is the ned rig primarily a cold/cool water bait? When does it become a second or third option? WT on Beaver right around 70. I'm still using it but wondering if it is time to put it down. Can it catch em all year?
I think they are the same fish. Up north they seem to grow larger than those I've caught here but so do the bluegills. Red eyes and a body shape between a bluegill and smallmouth. Round tail and a hard strike. Not quite as good as Crappie or gills but not bad. JMO
I did get out Tuesday morning. Fished avoca trying to duplicate my luck with Ned last week. Bass were willing but size was gone. Caught 9 but only one 14" spot. I did get all three bass species but small. Also had a 13" crappie just crush the ned while it was dead still. Lost something really big. I think flathead. No fast run, just a steady move to deeper water and a couple head shakes. I pushed the 6# line too much and so long. Love week day fishing. Saw 3 boats all morning. WT 68-69.
Finally got out early before the wind (or sun). I love a calm lake. White bass by the bridge from 7" to 17". Found a chunk rock bank and cleaned up with the Ned rig. 15 bass are not my
usual morning with at least 9 solid keepers and a 3#LM kicker. All on the ned, 6-10 fow. Wind came out around 10am and I was done. WT 60-64.
I had good luck on stripers last spring with lures, flickers and reef runners. Zero this spring in 3 trys, so I opted for the brooders. Kind of slooooow fishing until that reel screams.
Beautiful morning. Caught 19" WB as I was dropping down my 1st brooder. Tried for another for an hour before I moved on. Marking tons of bait and fish between the islands. Wind came up and so did the stripers. 3 around 12#'s and a few more big whites. 15" spot as I was bring the rods in. Brooders on flat lines, 125-135' back in 35-45 fow. Wt 64-66 everywhere. Everything died around 11. The whites still had eggs in them. Weird spring.
