I dont think its just about the White river, I was watching the weather channel and the Mississippi in Louisiana is near record flood stages. If the White and Little Red opened up their gates the lower White which is already flooded will flood more but so will the Mississippi, the Ouachita river sistem also has alot of water to get rid off along with the Arkansas their are alot of other systems that are blown out also. Soo you have to look of the big picture not just the White River picture

Jd looks like you had a great trip, your welcome on the tip for Quartz she is a fun river to fish. You aint joking about silver spooking easy they will bit but you cant let them see you and your cast must be perfect, I love fishing for silvers very challenging Yea the silvers run is bad this year the creeks should be loaded with them but nothing is in their, Its been a all around slow year for salmon in south central AK

Yea the valley streams I fished were willow and montana, both up stream and down. Last minute paterns, I would tie up some small orange fleshes for the russian size 10ish the ones I was using where made with glo bug yarn. they were wanting smaller paterns Oh and bring some midge patterns for the russian both dry and nymphs there was a huge midge hatch going on and all the small rainbows were going wild of coures their was no real size to them -6 inches but I would be real fun if the biguns werent biting

Jd, I just got back from my trip today the fishing was hard. The sun was out and it was warm everyday I was there, the water levels were rediculoisly low, and the reds were late or not coming. The russian is as low as I have ever seen it and it had no reds holding in it, so the rainbow fishing was hard only seen acouple holding in the river and they were super spookey. we caught some though but not as much as usual they were all holding around the cleaning tables. The parks highway steams were all fishing pretty tought to but they were alittle up compared to kenai steams the silvers are starting to show but they are mixed in with a bunch of pinks and chums. the rainbows were spooky. Even with the unfavorable conditions the fish can be caught but just not easy. but what the fishing laked the nice weather made up for good site seeing Of course the conditions might change in your favor and you might get some rain and overcast days

ok flies I dont know of any new ones that are clamed to garuntee fish and all but for rainbows and dollies eggs/flesh and a sculpin or 2, for silvers I would take black&purple egg sucking leaches, fushia bunny leaches, flash flys, bright clousers (maby), a polywog or 2, I think the most important thing is covering 4 major colors Black,purple,fushia/pink,and a few chartruse flys have that and you should be covered Anyway looks like you have rainbow flys coved just get some purple esl in that box and you will be set

Ohh yea hikeing around the turnigain arm will be awsome there should be some berries on the bushes to so you can go berry picking (tastie) I would say either the turnagain arm or Hatchers pass are my favorite places to hike. No I completly understand why you say technical fishing up there, but I guess for me its "home" so it dosnt seem to technical. You say your fishing 20mile from what I remember the silvers run really late their like mid to late sep. But of course you could try a real native alaskan experience and fish Bird creek (wouldnt recomend it) Nice and thick with silvers and crowds and bears that time of year Oh and I see Quartz is not on your list of rivers you must fish it I have caught 60+ dollies beading on it in aug before Their will also be some rainbows but not many in the creek. (Quartz is a tributary to Kenai lake you drive buy it on the way to the russian on the sterling highway.) Their is 2 campgrounds on the creek quarts creek and another one find the other one and you will find alot of fish. Do a little exploring an fish the sweepers and other structures and you will be rewarded

They mix in with the bows a little but usually if you are cathing bows head upstream and there will be grayling.(there is grayling in all the valley streams Willow,sheep,montana....) Where they mix in with the bows they are few and far between but they are their. The best bet to catch grayling is head up towards denalli park and possibly drive the denali highway. Of course that is a long drive but the senery is great Now if you dont catch grayling in the valley you could try the hike to cresent lake or fuller lakes on the kenai. Cresent is a 6.5 or 3 mile hike (6.5 is easier) and fuller lake is 2 or so miles. Both where stocked with grayling (grayling never populated the kenai) back in the day and have now spawn sucessfully in the lakes.

Whiterivermoose, nope I am heading to my friends house in Palmer (Anchorage area) Then we are going to fish the kenai and the (Susitna)valley hard. Im kinda lucky in the point that I just moved away from Alaska to here, so I know the area really good and got acouple freinds that I can stay at their house or set up base camp from there. Jd- Ill post a report when I get back not sure how much it will help you because the rivers change daily but Im sure it will give you a good Idea how everythings fishing this year. Also the flys will be the normal ones Trout will want eggs and flesh that time of year And the silvers will want egg sucking leaches and fushia bunny leaches.

Yea for the flesh fly its just a zonker strip, you can put a little egg at the end and make it a egg sucking flesh fly or you can put multi colors on it there is alot of different ways to tie it. I bet this fly would work for fishing shad kills in the winter. The purple fly is a salmon atractor the salmon stop eating when the come into the fresh water, but they will slam flys out of anger or curiosity, that fly is basicly a purple zonker with alittle bit of flash and polar chenille added to give it some sparkle, I dont know if this fly would work for rainbows but it might?

here is a popular late season rainbow/char fly it is called the 'Flesh Fly" this fly is mostly tied in ginger or white to represent aged flesh that has come off the spawned dead salmon, but around some popular salmon fisheries hundreds of anglers fillet their catches right buy the rivers creating a flesh hatch early in the season this flesh is more salmon color and the fish love it. As you can see these are pretty easy flys to tie up and I have thousands of them in all different colors and paterns

here is a fly I made up for fishing Silvers, It works in fushia and black also but I like purple the most. It should be a good king fly also(never tested it though) I like to fish it on the swing in a deep pool where you see some silvers holding, Its alot of fun watching them move over and hammer flys

I dont pegg my bead at all or I peg it about 1-0inches away from my hook so. Zach if you dont like it then dont fish it but I see no diference of fishing a bead then fishing a foam hopper their both plastic.

Jd, Yep I to am heading up north to fish again after living here for 4months now I need a break from the heat and small fish. So I am headed up to anchorage on the 4th aug staying with my freind and doing abunch of fishing. Its funny you say Ak is technical fishing, I think the same way about the tailwaters down here. Yep late Aug will be a great time to go, as long as the water agrees with you. last year about that time the rivers where still really high from our 100yr flood that riped threw southcentral AK. Anyway Ill post a report when I get back on the 11th of aug. And if you got any questions I might know ask me. I know the kenai and valley pretty well from living there for a while

Yea I am aware of how they clip hatchery salmon/steelhead in the north so you can easily identify wild or hatchery because most of the wild fish are protected. But on these fish the side fins by the gill plate is completly gone

River Runner, I fisht he little red every weekend and I thought the dark ones the fresh stockers? and the chromers the fish that have been in the river longer? I came to this conclusion from the fact the hatchery fish are almost black I guess Im wrong? Hornyheadchub, nice fish pictures and Im glad I see someone that holds Trout right (no fingers in the gills, not supporting the body) Did anyone notice the one fin on the fish is missing? I just did and I just caught one on the red yesterday like that darn hatchery tanks bangs up the fish pretty bad I guess

Action dosnt realy mater about fly size. The wt of the line determins what size fly& wt of fly, the rod will throw commfortably. The faster action throws a tighter loop which is good for windy conditions, but a beginer caster and alot of expericed casters are more comfortable with a med fast action, this action can still generat tight loops and cast in the wind. The rainshadow is a great action I wouldnt mess with the forcast though. Oh and sorry I have never striper fished before so I dont know what size rod you should get but Ive hered 10wts

makes sense but the Kenai borough hasnt had a brown bear hunt in 20 or so years, to many bears get killed on acident everyyear so they have to close the hunts. Also the russian is a small river and fishing for the bears is easy because their is large salmon runs there. Anyway they bears need to eat and this river is a major food source for the area so they will always around
