Lmt out thanks for the fantastic report. I've been looking/talking about devils lake for several months. On google earth it doesn't look like there are many places to stay at on the lake. Would you mind saying where you stayed and what it was like? On a side note 34 yrs ago next month my wife and i spent our honeymoon on lake Oahe in SD. She caught her first walleye there. It weighed 6lb 7or 8 oz(i don't recall exactly). Glad you had a safe trip and hammered the walleyes.

Wrench, thanks for the offer. If I go with a jon i"ll be looking for a 48" bottom width. I still got my eye on a 1967 lund V bottom tho. I went to my local DMV and asked about getting a title for a trailer from a state that don't title trailers under 2000 lbs. Sounds like it would be a hassle but doable.

We have rented both jons and pontoon while at Phils. We stayed there 3 wks this yr and have almost a month total reserved for 2016. It adds up quickly Couldn't agree with you more. I passed the point of being invincible along time ago. I don't own a boat yet. I was looking at a 16' flatbottom on craigslist but backed out when he didn't have a title for the trailer. My neighbor offered to give me an old evinrude 6 hp. That's how I came up with the posted scenario. I was then looking at a 14' lund and cap on it was 4 people @ 150lbs or 960 pounds including people,motor. gas gear. I don't think I know an adult that weighs 150lbs so I think I should go by total cap.

Thanks. One thing i didn't think about was capacity. 2 adults and 2 kids. Maybe pushing over 500 lbs in persons plus motors, gas batteries, gear etc. Putting in at the landing is a good idea. It's a 7hr trip for us to get there. We have stayed at Phils place several times and have a reservation for next year.

Would a 16' jon boat with a 6 hp motor be ok for taney?

Hey all! I am new to fly fishing so I have some questions. After much reading I am almost totally confused. Seems like I read that "much learning has made him mad." Anyway I ordered a CGR 7' 4/5 wt rod and the prestige plus #2 reel. I know this is entry level equipment but that's where I'm at. I am kinda leaning to a 4wt line that is 1/2 heavier to put me between the 4 and 5 wt. Any info on line wt. brands and backing would be helpful. We have a week at Phils in July and then again in Sept. I don't know if I'll get to use the fly rod there but I'm going to try. Hopefully sometime in the future I will get to fish some steams down there. Back around 1980 I bought a 8' 7wt Diawa fly rod and a martin #63 tuna can reel. I used it a couple of times on bluegill with a rubber spider. I wasn't to successful with my casting or catching so I put it away and forgot about it. I just recently dug it out of the attic and have been practicing casting in the yard. I have no idea what weight line is on it and there is no backing at all. I can pretty much get 35' consistently on a good day 40' but that's about it. My parents came to the USA in '48 from Canada. Every summer we would go on vacation "back home". Problem was is that all my relatives spoke french and I didn't. When I was 9 or 10 yrs old dad took me to my aunt and uncles farm where he spent time as a kid. These people spoke English and a cousin of mine spent the summers there. They didn't have electricity or indoor plumbing. There was running water in the kitchen sink from an underground spring and it ran 24/7. If you wanted hot water you got a pot full and put it on the wood burning stove. Boy could my aunt cook/bake on that thing. there was also a little creek there that was fed from that spring and it held brookies. Now in most places us kids could step across it; but them brookies (although small) were in there. our poles were branches and a few feet of line. We dug red worms out of the manure pile or used grasshoppers for bait. I spent a month each summer after that fishing, picking wild blueberries or any other adventure we could think of . Whatever we caught or picked aunt Eleanor would fix for us. Had many a breakfast of wild blueberry pancakes with maple syrup and fried trout. Sunday suppers were always fried chicken. A few times aunt Eleanor found BBs under the chickens skin. I don't know how they got there. My dad didn't hunt or fish so I didn't get to do much of either until I got back to the farm each summer. As I have gotten older I miss those days. I guess I chose a glass rod out of nostalgia more than anything else.
