My dad and I went to Montauk Saturday for the last weekend of C&R. We both had a pretty good day with soft hackles and pine squirrel leeches. I brought down the boo rod. Anyways I got this little guy in some riffles not far below where the Montauk spring comes into the river. Do you think it's stream bred or a daring baby escapee? Haha. I would think with the amount of trout in the park there could be some successful spawning.. It has the par marks and intact fins..

Eric82 replied to bkbying89's topic in Big/Little Piney River
Also i read that the day use area opens March 1st and camping area April 1st. However, i guess if Joe law is giving out tickets anyway go ahead and park at the bridge. It ain't bad neither. -

Its 1000 ft down the hill give or take. Then you'll be at the field directly across from Lane Spring itself. Follow the signs taking to the Spring and walk past it to the river itself. As far as the CG being closed don't worry about if you think you're ok to access there. The website and brochures talk about being able to park at the gate and access. As far as flies go i've been having a lot of success swinging soft hackles and leeches. Although i've been fishing soft hackles a lot lately. I would also bring some zebra midges for nymph fishing this time of year. If there is a hatch on BWO dries might be good to try. Good luck!! -

Although the gate is locked you can access the river. I've been doing it all winter and usually I don't see another person. Just walk on down the hill. -
Blue Ribbon Trip, Nice Fish, and a Little Humble Pie
Eric82 replied to mic's topic in Wild Trout Creeks & Streams
That is a lunker!!! Nice fish!!! well I'm glad we all had some luck this weekend!!!! -
Well yesterday was a cold one on BSC. Still a great day to be out there and explore the creek with some snow on the ground. I brought one to hand. It was my first trout on BSC funny enough. Got the little guy on a parachute adams.

Thanks everyone!!!

I liked the action on the rod. A little bit faster than vintage glass but still a good flex in my opinion. Certainly slower than any new graphite.

Braved the cold Saturday for some Little Piney action. The water was still up a bit with and had some color in it. The stream had been moved around a bit and noticed a new tree across the river. A lot of the root wads were washed away. That aside my dad and I brought a few beauties to hand. My dad caught his first wild trout ever and fished the fiberglass 4 wt I built him for Xmas for the first time as well. Peacock soft hackles and olive mohair leeches for those keeping score. Cold but satisfying...

i would say give the current a try but also i would make the short trip from the current area to the little piney. fun stream with great chances to catch wild trout.

Using grizzly hen soft hackle feathers will get ya some longer length. That's what I've been using lately. Can get em olive, etc.

on the killer bug how much are you twisting, if any, the yarn before you wrap it?
-
i was there too on saturday for about an hour after leaving Maramec. there were cars parked at all the parking "spots". 3 where we parked. glad you had success!!!

i fish them downstream on the swing. i do try to take into account the flow of the water to get a semi drag free drift. I dont want the fly to swing too fast so i do put upstream mends into it. i like to cast at a 45 degree angle downstream most of the time. But i will vary my angles depending on how fast the water flow is. I look for faster water rather than pools.

Well last minute change of plans and went to Lane. Met a buddy there. River was up but fishable. I got 3 and he got 6. All on soft hackles.
-
Thanks Matt. That's the plan. Gonna go there tomorrow morning and scope it out. If bad may swing by the Little Piney by lane and check that out too. Thanks for the info. Eric
