  1. What color Caddis Larva/Pupa do people have the most success with. I tying up a bunch and looking for some insight on colors. I've got some greens/peacock colors, but wasn't sure what else is prevalent in the stream. Hopefully Sam has some input on this one. Thanks guys. Mizzouflyfisher
  2. I'm looking for info on a good streamer rod. Something between my somewhat light 5 wt. and my 8 wt. It will be used primarily for throwing streamers and possibly for terrestrials on windy days out west. I'm looking for something in a stiff 6/moderate 7 wt. Let me know which rods you like for this application. Also, for those of you with inflatable pontoon boats, do any of you use a longer, say 10' rod to help get the line off the water. Just wondered if you thought it was really worth it to get a rod with a limited application. Thanks for the info. Mizzouflyfisher
  3. I wear the neoprene gloves that also have the mitt that folds back. The best ones I have found are made by Kenai I think. Also, when it is real cold, I have a belt with a fleece lined pouch. Throw a little hand warmer in there, and it will be toasty for a couple of hours. Not much good when you're stripping streamers, but for nymphing, just switch between hands while keeping one in the pouch. Also makes you learn how to cast right and left handed. Mizzouflyfisher
  4. I'm tying up a bunch of caddis larva and pupae, and I'm looking for some information on colors. If anybody has any colors/patterns that work well on the Current (hopefully Sam sees this) I would really appreciate the info. Mizzouflyfisher
  5. Thanks for the help guys. rmueller-I do spend some time at Clearwater-I'll probably be over there tomorrow. I don't get over there a lot though, because I order most of my materials off the internet. Brian-Thanks for the tippet-everything is great. I hope to meet up with you sometime down at Taney. 6. I'm looking to tie up a bunch of RS2s. What kind of tail material is typically used. I don't want to spend several bucks on microfibets, so what else should I try. This whole tuition thing is killing my fishing money. Also, do you match the CDC to the color of the body, or can you just use white/cream on all of them. That junk is expensive also. Let me know what ideas are out there. Mizzouflyfisher
  7. With regard to the question about weighted scuds, I tie most of my scuds without weight. Especially in smaller sizes (18 and smaller). This is because I like to sight fish really shallow water with small scuds, and any weight at all will drive the scud straight into the rocks. If i need weight, I add split shot till I get it right, or use a weighted scud/ tungsten zebra midge as my weight. With split shot, I always put them 6-8 inches above the fly. Also, I always put the weight above the top fly if I am using a 2 fly rig. This reduces the number of snagged fish. Mizzouflyfisher
  8. The Current is a great place to fish, but it can be humbling (i.e. 2 weeks ago). If I had to pick 5 flies i would take a size 16 tan elk hair caddis, size 16 prince nymph or zug bug, size 16 hares ear, size 18 cream wd-40, and number 5 would be whatever fly in your box you have the most confidence in. It seems like there are always caddis hatching. I didn't expect to see any 2 weeks ago, but there were, and there are generally midges hatching year round wherever you go. It will be interesting to see what other people say. Mizzouflyfisher
  9. This is pretty cool. What size jig is hanging in front of the camera? And is there any generation right now, it looks like the camera is moving around.
  10. Fished Mantauk for a few hours on Sunday. Started in the small catch and release area below the hatchery. Caught several on a wd-40, nothing huge. I always like to start there to see if there are any monsters in there. Then went down to the trophy area below the park. In about 2 hrs, only managed one hookup, unless you count the 4 minnows that I caught on a wd-40. I saw very few fish. Probably the fewest fish I have ever seen in the trophy area. Did see caddis and midges hatching, but very sporadic. Went back up into the park and worked down from the spring a ways. There were a ton of fish, but not very many large fish. Caught 15 or 20, almost all on a sz 20 wd-40. The key was getting down through the deeper runs. Used a tungsten zebra midge and 2 split shot to anchor the wd-40 and set my palsa float about 4-5 ft. deep. Not how I really like to fish, but it got the job done. Also don't overlook the shallow riffles. Noticed several people that walked straight through the riffles, but I would walk to the riffles after they passed through and saw some of the nicest fish of the whole day. It was a beautiful day. By the way, when is winter going to start? It's supposed to be 65 today. I might have to head over to Bethel Park after class today. Mizzouflyfisher
  11. Got down to Taney for Thurs. night through Sunday afternoon with my dad and girlfriend. Anybody who saw the RV pulling a boat, that was me. Overall, the number of fish caught was awesome, but as others have been saying, there are a lot of short fish. Fished a couple of nights with Rapalas (so cool to see fish waking behind a Rapala), but only caught around 10 with nothing of real size. Friday was great on small ostrich scuds and wd-40s. Saturday we put the boat in for a relaxing few hours. Managed close to thirty small rainbows all on the same white jig set about 3 feet under a float. 7x was absolutely crucial. Sunday was awesome as well, despite the hellacious wind (chased my girlfriend back to the RV after a tangle on the first cast). Good thing about the wind is it chased most everybody away, while I was hooking fish on most every cast. Same set up as friday, ostrich scud with a wd-40 trailer. Caught a few more decent fish, including a 26" rainbow. Picture is on film, so I will post a picture as soon as I can. My girlfriend even managed a close to 20" rainbow which is always cool to see. I caught close to 160 trout, and 90 % of them came on the same three flies. All in all a great trip with awesome weather.
  12. I've also got a pontoon boat. When there are 2 or more units running at Taney, it becomes difficult to fish. Better to just use the boat for getting to spots, and then stopping to fish. I've used my pontoon on Norfork with both units running and on the Snake in Wyoming. In fast water, you just have to use the pontoon to move around. I still like it. Mizzouflyfisher
  13. I looked at the Lund web site at the various models. Does anyoen know how they compair the Bass Pro Tournament V or the Targa series? My dad's got a tracker Tournament v-18 with a merc 90 4-stroke. I really like the layout of the boat, and the motor is great, but the finish of the tracker doesn't compare to the lund. The tracker has been improved since my dad got his, but I still don't think it is anywhere near the Lund (though the lund is probably 50% more expensive). I also don't like the high sides of the lund, we've taken the tracker to Canada 6 times and it's done fine on the big water. In sum, Lund better quality, but more expensive and bigger. Tracker, cheaper and more of a bass boat layout. You take your pick. Mizzouflyfisher
  14. Fishing at norfork is entirely dependent on generation. If there is any generation it is nearly impossible to wade, while at taney, you can fish rather well under 1 unit, and work some areas with 2 units. I have only waded extensively below the dam. I usually take my inflatable pontoon and work farther down. Scuds and midges work pretty well until you reach the boat docks below the dam. Maybe try stripping cracklebacks or soft hackles. At the boat docks, a crackleback or woolie on a sink tip works really well, especially in the deep hole down by the bend. Somebody else will have to give information about McLelland's or the handicap access. Hope this helps.
  15. I've always wanted to fish Crane Creek but never have-hope to this year. Anybody have any general suggestions regarding access and time of year to fish?
  16. I have used a pontoon boat several times on both Norfork and Taney. They are fine on Norfork with both units running, it is just hard to find places to fish-have to fish the seams behind islands mostly. I've been on Taney with 3 units and almost impossible to fish. At Norfork you can arrange a shuttle from the fly shop that is at the takeout where the White and Norfork merge. On Taney, my dad and I usually float to around Lilly's and call a cab. One of us rides back to the RV and comes and picks the other up. I've also used them out west on the Snake and Bighorn. I love my pontoon, there is not better way to get away from the crowds out west.
