  1. Funny enough my dad brothers and I have scheduled a trip with him in April.
  2. Republic, Mo!
  3. Happy New Years everybody! Thought I would start a thread on some Smallmouth only related goals for 2024. Here are mine: 1. Finally catch that 18+ incher. I’ve caught plenty in the 14-16 inch range but it’s time I get that biggun. 2. Fish the Buffalo River in Arkansas (bucket list trip) 3. Find a creek off the beaten path and learn it. What about you?
  4. Thank you!
  5. I have a canoe but I would most likely wade upstream and float back. I live in Republic. I’m not looking for honey holes, but I want to know if this stream is worth my time vs going elsewhere. I’m willing to drive but only if it’s worth it! I haven’t found a lot of info on the fishing on the google. Which may not be a bad thing.
  6. Thank you for the reply. That’s a bummer to hear!
  7. Hey all! This winter I'm researching new rivers and creeks to fish in 2024. Big Sugar Creek is on my radar. It's about an hour and a half from me so it's alittle bit of a drive. Anyone know, generally, how the fishing is? Worth the drive? I know it'll be crowded in the summers, and it looks like a pretty little stream from the photos! Thank you!!
  8. I agree 100%. It’s hard to even classify it as a river, imo. It is super wild though. Its nature is of extremes. I don’t think it’s ever been the best producer of big Smallmouth because of that. I do think the lower thirty miles or so is your best bet for quality Smallmouth. But the “problem” is that it’s all wilderness with no access. The water levels are way more consistent and I think the river is more fertile the lower you go. I talked to a guy in Mountain Home Arkansas who says he catches big smallies where the Buffalo meets the White.
  9. Fascinating! Those fish didn’t take the COVID vaccine did they?
  10. That’s awesome! I think Buffalo River smallmouth live an exceptionally hard life. The floods, and droughts and otters and people make it tough. But they survive.
  11. I would definitely not call it “void of life.” I see hundreds of fish whenever I’m on it. Although the sizable smallmouth are lacking. My brother in law is from Norway and he’s not used to lure fishing. He stood in one spot and caught almost a dozen small smallies using a rainbow trout colored jerkbait, lol. The fish are there.
  12. From my understanding it’s a quantity over quality river. A lot of 8-12 inchers.
  13. Thanks for sharing! I floated from Hammond Access to ROLF and thought it was an incredibly beautiful float!
  14. They’re in the Striper’s bellies 😂
  15. I’ve thought that too. It surprises me that they aren’t amongst the springs more. Especially when it’s hot!
  16. I don’t think a bounty on Stripers would be a bad thing. Depending on whether it would actually work. If the Stripers only affected the trout I wouldn’t care so much. Invasive species vs invasive species. But the Smallmouth heavily rely on crawfish for food, and the invasive stripers definitely compete with the Smallies for them. I think man has screwed up the NFOW ecosystem too much for us to just let nature take back over. Things are completely out of whack. There’s things we should do, within reason, to alleviate some of the mistakes.
  17. Well, I guess I gotta head upstream of Hammond then!
  18. Interesting. Thank you!
  19. Oh, I did see one monster brown trout. Probably 20+ inches.
  20. Thank you for the insight! I guess I’ll try above Hammond next time I fish it.
  21. Great insight, thank you. Did the flood affect the Smallmouth population like it did the trout? My wife and I saw tonnes of life in and around the river, so that’s a good sign. Maybe some species were less affected by it.
  22. Interesting. I would like to talk to someone who fishes the river regularly and see if they’ve noticed a difference in trout fishing. The MDC website states fishing isn’t as good as pre 2017 flood, but doesn’t give specifics.
  23. Interesting. I’ve been wanting to fish Bryant Creek for a while now. Hopefully no stripers there. Heard it’s a good smallmouth stream.
  24. Wonder if the MDC should start culling some of the stripers out. Or maybe start stocking rainbows.
  25. Don’t they spawn in the spring?
