Yellowstone Park
Phil Lilley replied to Phil Lilley's topic in Lodging, Camping, Kayaking and Caoneing
That's why I'm asking- didn't think about runoff. Is it not fishable in late May? -
Talking about taking a family vacation to Yellowstone next summer. We went 10 years ago in late August so I know what to expect that time of year. What about early? Mid May? Trying to avoid the crowds and of course fish! I'd think early would be good.

Great to hear from you... was wondering what happened. And yes it was a year ago. Haven't had that much excitement since!

And you were worried about the water... Thanks for the report. We had alot of rainbows brought in yesterday. Quite a few caught off the dock on worms and power bait. Fish midged morning and evening... I pushed off with a boat in front of the dock last evening and caught a few on a red zebra myself- one small brown and the rest rainbows. Good reports coming in on fishing the trophy area above Fall Creek using zebras. 3-4 feet deep in the channel and 12 inches on the flat.

Favorite Dubbing For Scuds?

Can't believe Rolan hasn't chimed in on this one... I won't let the cat out of the bag Mine is the same as Rolan. -
They treat water like gold and conserve when they need to. It's a balancing act in dry years. They consider lots of factors. But in wet years they let it rip.

I'm a Chief's fan but if anyone has to beat them I'd like Brett Farr be the one.

Ran alittle water this am- not much- already off. Lots of midging in front of the dock this am... catching rainbows off the dock on pb and worms.

Most of those guys were just talking and didn't fish, including me. Almost all of them cleared out in less than 30 minutes.
-
No eggs- no fish spawning in this area. Not much pressure either- only 3 other boats in sight all morning.

7-10 days. It's called the "Fish House". Mr. Morris changed the name recently... one of the many changes that has delayed the opening. But I understand Morris is taking special strides to make this a show piece since it's in his back yard. Meals are to be reasonable too. Looking forward to seeing it.

Wanted to get serious about fishing this morning after all the talk about slow fishing. Boated up to Andy's house about 8:30 am and started with a couple of scuds #16 and #18 in brown (mink) and gray. Using 6x fl. tippet and setting the indicator deep- about 6 feet- but only fishing 2-3 feet of water. Wanted to make sure the scuds were dragging the bottom. No wind. No current. I had to move the flies every 10 seconds of so to attract attention. The takes were very subtle and I probably missed a bunch but did land 4-5 rainbows. Really wanted to try casting dries along the bluff bank although nothing was active on the surface. Tried a #8 stimulator- nothing. #10 red humpy- nothing. Change to midge fishing on the shallow side. About 9:30 am midge starting hatching and the trout responded. Most of the acivity was on the shallow side but I wasn't doing well using zebras so I tied on an olive #22 biot midge which I thought was the wrong color. It was a very light olive. 7x fl tipet and a half palsa 6 inches above the fly. The rainbows loved it. I had tied on about 20 foot of leader so not to spook the trout, since they were in less than 12 inches of water. It all worked, even with no wind. Caught about a dozen nice rainbows before calling it quits about 11 am. They were still midging good when I left. Trout fought good and hard. Trees are beatuiful right now... Here is a couple of pics from a couple of weeks ago at #2. Water was coming on at the time. Looks like a convention!

Water is off this morning.

Haven't heard anything yet but you might give Mark a call at Cricket Creek Marina. 870 426 3474 http://www.cricketcreek.com/

My educated guess is it will shut down Friday sometime- before Saturday and the weekend. I'd be very surprised if they ran it Saturday.

I think it's 25. Can't gig above Fall Creek on Taney. But there's plenty of suckers below.

Too many trout was the problem back in the late 70's and early 80's, enough to deplete the food base in the lake. Trout management is always a challenge. When we were debating whether or not the new regs would actually work in 95, that was one of the main concerns. One thought was that trout would start dying of starvation in the upper end because of a lack of food if there got to be too many fish. I don't think there's many fish kept by waders when the water is off but when the water is running, I know that guides will take their clients up to the dam and drift egg flies and keep their clients' limits, rainbows under 12 inches.

What a buck! He'll have a hard time out doing this one! I have the same problem... my first deer was a nice buck, my biggest buck so far. Thanks for sharing!

Without sounding "smart", this forum is almost 2 years old and full of information on Table Rock, what lures, where to use them and when. Go back to the era you're interested in fishing, ie fall, winter, spring, summer, and read some of the reports. There's also "How to" threads describing several techniques used on the lake. There are quite a few vets on Table Rock that will be more than willing to help with specific questions. I didn't answer your "where" question. Some of the best places to buy specific lures for specific lakes are at shops close to or on the lake itself. But Bass Pro and Cabelas are also great places to look.

No. No way. They've made that very clear.

The people who call the "shots" aren't at Beaver, Table Rock or Bull Shoals Dams but probably in Tulsa at the Southwest Power Administration's offices. This is how I assume they make their decisions on who and when to generate. They estimate power consumption and then decide what the cheapest way to get it. Factor in varied facility conditions... fossil burning plants and nuclear plants both have down time for maintenance. Hydro has restrictions in the fall because of low DO periods. Then lake levels are factored in. They set a plan, weekly, monthly- whatever. But in the middle of a plan, factors change and generation schedules change- sometimes at a moment's notice. The operators have some knowledge but only so far out. But they do what they're told. Hope this helps... hope it's fairly accurate. Doesn't help estimating for your trip, unfortunately. But again, that's the nature of tailwaters.

One unit down to 703.5 right now. That's about the lowest level they can run. I just noticed it down in front of my office and the water barely moving and thought it may be shut down. They may shut it down today.

In my Alaska travels, I met a real "bush woman" in Naknek that showed me a site to purchase eye glasses very cheap. I didn't want to post anything until I tried the product but now that I have a new pair from http://zennioptical.com I can freely recommend this place for a great pair of glasses at a very reasonable cost! I got a pair of rimless wire, pergressive bifocals (no line) that would have costed me $400 at WalMart Eyevision for about $60 with shipping. It took about 2 weeks from the time I ordered them. Just have to have the paper perscription you'd get from an eye exam and fill in the blanks. Now that I have a good pair, I'm ordering an extra pair cause I'm very hard on glasses!!

Gene Dunaway, President of Friends of the North Fork and White Rivers www.friendsoftherivers.org sends the following for your action. October 30, 2007 RE: Baxter County Quorum Court Ordinance to require Developers to acquire Stormwater Permits prior to ground alteration Dear Friends, In-stream gravel mining suspended on Crooked Creek First, some really good news. The Pollution Control and Ecology Commission (PC&EC) indefinitely suspended in-stream gravel mining on Crooked Creek in the Guy King appeal case last Friday! Friends and the Crooked Creek Coalition intervened in the case, represented by Richard Mays. This is a “watershed” event where ADEQ and the Commission have recognized that this kind of mining is detrimental to our streams. It is another step towards ending this senseless practice that is destroying our stream channels and increasing sediment, the main form of pollution in our streams. We applaud ADEQ and the Commission for their actions. Baxter County Erosion Prevention Ordinance Fails – Very Important! Now, back to business. As you may have read or heard in the local news, the Baxter County Quorum Court (QC) voted 8 to 3 against the above mentioned ordinance requiring developers to prove they have a plan in place to prevent erosion, prior to ground alteration. Historically, many area developers have started clearing land before obtaining a storm water permit from ADEQ. By the time the ADEQ, which is complaint driven, gets involved, the damage is already done. With this ordinance, the County will have authority to require a plan to be in place before clearing begins. They can also monitor developments and enforce a "Stop Order" for those in violation. The ordinance is identified as "Baxter County Quorum Court Ordinance establishing minimum standards for development projects relating to ground alteration, grading and erosion control." A copy can be obtained from Judge Hall's office. After the ordinance was voted down by the QC Judge Hall referred it back to the Environmental Committee who agreed to bring it before the QC at the Nov. 6 meeting for reconsideration. It was also recommended that letters in support be sent to the various QC members and calls made showing support. To expedite that effort, I have attached a letter of support for this ordinance along with a list of the QC members and their contact information. If you are not sure of which member is your representative or if you live outside the county, please send your letter to Judge Hall. These letters will be brought to the QC meeting to be presented as proof of your support. It is also important to note that the City of Cotter has adopted the ADEQ Regulations regarding Stormwater Runoff into their city building codes. The City of Norfork Planning Commission has announced their support of this ordinance as a means to help control the river construction that is taking place in the Norfork area. It is also imperative that we show public support by our presence at the QC meeting on Nov 6 at 6:00 pm. Your attendance will be appreciated. The Deadline for mailing this letter must be this Friday in order to reach the QC in time for the meeting. Please do not let this opportunity pass. Also, feel free to pass this along to any interested party. For the rivers, Gene Gene Dunaway President Friends of the North Fork and White Rivers, Inc. POB 61 Mountain Home, AR 72564 Sample Letter: Oct 25, 2007 Quorum Court Representative’s Name Address Re: Baxter County Quorum Court Ordinance establishing minimum standards for development projects relating to ground alteration, grading and erosion control Dear Sir, I was disappointed to hear the Quorum Court voted against this ordinance. It is a critical issue that needs your attention and support. The problem is 1) even though ADEQ regulations are required by AR Law, ADEQ does not have sufficient personnel to monitor the large areas they cover, and 2) with the system being essentially complaint driven, by the time a violation is reported by citizens, it is too late. The damage is done. I know you are aware of developments, both large and small, such as Overlook Estates that are causing significant damage to our streams, our economy and adjoining landowners. This ordinance is crucial as it requires Developers to show they have a plan and are in compliance prior to disturbing the ground. It will most certainly help reduce the amount of violations and help protect our beautiful area. I strongly urge that you reconsider passing this Ordinance and to support these efforts.
