  1. How did you catch your silvers? Describe the technique if you would. Thanks!
  2. Caleb and I got out on the water last evening from about 6:30 till dark. Boated up to the dam and drifted the north bank from the old outlet 4 to the ramp 4-5 times. The best spot was the slack water there at the old outlet before the current picked up along that bank. We threw 1/8 and 3/32 oz jig, sculpin, olive/sculpin, brown/black and white and did the best on olive/black although the other colors produced too. They were running 3 units when we got up there and then dropped in a couple of feet, then they brought it back up, it seemed. Not good for catching- trout don't like that. We didn't do as well fishing the rock bluff/current as I thought we would. Talked to Tracy Frenzel, who guides for us, and he said he'd been doing real well along that stretch using sculpin jigs. I think the water fluctuation nixed the bite for us. We caught maybe 15- 2 browns 14 and 18 inches- and rest rainbows 12-17 inches. Had one rainbow about 20 on but it came off before I netted it. We did make one drift from the cable and only caught one rainbow before the old starting point.
  3. Just a few pics for those who haven't seen the work on Shepherd in a while.
  4. Is there a fund or somewhere someone could just send a donation? We belong to Christian Care Medishare which isn't really an insurance company but a group of people who share in their medical expenses. Reason I'm mentioning this... if every member here sent $10, we could help with their need up to almost $22,000. NOT saying we should and I'm not asking- but for those who wouldn't or couldn't fish a tournament, it would be a chance to help.
  5. Jigs, jigs, jigs! If the water is running, work 1/8th oz white, black, olive, sculpin or brown jigs off the bottom while drifting. That would be my preference.
  6. OK- I'm going to try to address this in a loving and diplomatic way, if that's possible on a forum. I know what Leonard's fly is and while not revealing the pattern, which is not new, I can say it's a pattern I personally have not seen used on this tailwater cause it patterns something we don't have. It's not a new pattern at all, just a new pattern to Taney, or a new pattern to most people who fish here cause I've never seen it mentioned before. With that said- anyone who goes on a forum and says he has a fly that's producing well and then says he won't share it for whatever reason is asking for trouble. Funny thing I think Leonard knew that going in. He knew it would pull some chains and I think he's getting a chuckle from all the attention. Now whether the attention is getting him guide business... well that's a marketing issue I don't want to touch on. Not something I would do personally but I'm not Leonard. So- I haven't betrayed the fly and hopefully cleared up alittle of the speculating. But I won't lock the topic... it's been a pretty good discussion so far.
  7. ditto! ditto! ditto!
  8. If you haven't been... it totally worth every penny.
  9. As soon as I invent... or I mean tie it. It's only in my head at this point.
  10. One thing is for sure... if you exaggerate or lie about reports on a forum, especially this forum and especially on upper Taney- it will come back and bite you good! There's too many people fishing up there and too many of those people reading this forum and posting. For this reason, I don't think Leonard would lie about catching fish (especially during the day). He has too much too lose, being a guide. I'm not saying anything about Leonard's reports in a negative light here... just stating the obvious. On the other hand, if you have a great day... an unbelievable day... on any water and you post it, be ready to possibly take alittle heat. It happens. If people aren't posting it, they're thinking it. Take the guess work out of the equation- take a camera! Just don't hold the fish out at arm's length Lastly, and I'll shut up. I met Leonard at outlet #1 this morning at 8 am. The 2 gentlemen he spoke of were there and Leonard talked about his previous morning's catch within earshot of both of them, even told me to ask them IF I didn't believe him. I didn't, nor did they turn around and give him a funny look like, "what are you talking about???!" So it's pretty safe to say his catch was real. And saying that... it appears we're going to have a fantastic fall season with lots of big trout!
  11. Not to give any secrets away... but I was thinking about trying something with a jig. After seeing Leonard's fly(s), take a jig hook/lead head, cut the hook at the start of the bend (leave it straight off the head), tie in another hook like a stinger- same size as the jig hook using mono, then tie marabou and a collar like normal but with longer marabou on both- the shank of the first hook and on to the second hook. The second hook would have to be a straight, wooly hook, or not(?). Basically you'd have an articulated jig. I know we don't have leaches but these types of flies/lures are getting alot of attention and success.
  12. Phil- -> shaking his head <- Oh Leonard, Leonard, Leonard...
  13. Man, what a day to remember. How many did Ellie land? Will miss our fishing trip in October before the conclave. Not coming back from AK till 10/8. But will try to make it later in the fall.
  14. I've checked and I was surprised how few programs loaded. On another computer, about 18 programs were loaded, slowing the computer down. Thanks- maybe this will help someone else.
  15. What is the key command that brings up the menu that controls what programs are started up when windows starts?
  16. I love the pics... thanks!
  17. Would like to read the whole proposal and other viewpoints. In light of the recent accidents, I'd say if it's what it looks like, it's not a good proposal. Did you know there have been over 2,000 deaths in mines in China this year? Marsha read an article to me last night off Foxnews- I think.

  21. I checked- and Delta is bad about not giving an inch. Check on's limited to 50 pounds and 62 inches, length+height+width. Fit in that and you may want to join the circus... or a show in Branson.

  23. Booked my flight today... leaving 9/9 and heading back 10/8. You guys went over to Margot in my boat! Or did you take 2 boats? Referring to the pic of the group and the boat. I see Jim got the windshield put on. Those silvers put up quite a fight! If you haven't tangled with one, you can't imagine. Bill just emailed me and said to post it here - Quick little post from the last frontier. Getting ready to put Becky on a plane home, we have had a really nice time, however it has been miserable weather up until today. Went to Seward on tuesday and it simply poured all day. Had some great seafood and toured the small boat harbor in the rain. Also went to the marine life center and that was really nice. Wednesday we went to Soldatna, and Kenei. If I would have to fish that crowed river or the Russian, I would just not come to Alaska, it was absolutely packed. There were drift boats by the dozen and raft parties that would make the Colorado River look deserted. I frankly have never seen that ammount of fisherman on taneycomo, ever. Fisherman on the Russian were litterly shoulder to shoulder in the pouring rain. Didn't look like a lot of fun but we had a nice drive. Thursday we went to Mount McKenley and it was spectacular. WE started in a driving rain, but by the time we got there it was bright sun and beautiful. WE came back thru willow ak and crossed over hatcher pass. This is a 4000 ft. mostly gravel pass and it was raining cats and dogs. There were people out however and they were berry pickin and mining for gold in the little Su. Today, Friday, we went to the Alaska Native culture Center and then to the Alaska Museum. Both were very nice and we had a great time. Going to miss her as she is leaving on the 8 oclock flight back to St. Louis. Tomorrow I am headed for Kodiak, They say the Silvers are still in the mouths of the bays and fly fishing the salt is spectacular along with fresh run Pinks. You can wade the bays in front of the river mouths, and catch fish on every cast, so says our hosts. Did see a guy catch a nice silver at keni off the public fishing pier. Bird Creek, Little Susitna, Montana Creek, Six mile, Twenty Mile were fishing ok, but not great. WE viewed all these spots, and people were just flat shoulder to shoulder along with Ship and Campbell Creek. I don't see how a fish gets through. Becky is taking the computer home and so I will say adue' for now. One quick hitter for the lodge, we may be featured in USA Today as one of the most romantic fall places to stay in america. WE have been nominated by Maxcine Pinson a staff writer, and all her selections were published last year. Could be a really nice piece of advertising. Looking forward to seeing you at Naknek.
