Late in the conversation too - I've picked around since 7-8 years old. Own a cheap alvarez bought in a pawn shop. Me and my buddy (guitarist in the Dave Caputo Band) take our guitars with us on most Eleven Point River float trips. Specializing: Ozark Mountain Daredevils, John Prine, The Band, Rolling Stones, Amazing Rhythm Aces, Guess Who, Loudon Wainwright III, Marshall Tucker, CCR, and our latest - The Gourds cover to Snoop Dogg's "Gin and Juice". IF you are ever on the Eleven Point and see a couple old hippies with guitars, stop by with a request. We can fake most anything!!

I've posted on Colorado Fishing Forum w/out much luck. Wondering if anyone might have info for me: I am visiting Aspen, Colorado from June 8-12 and will have a 35' RV. Researching the area campgrounds, it looks like the only choices will be the Aspen/Basalt CG on the Frying Pan River and Difficult CG on the Roaring River. Aspen/Baslat CG is $40 per night and busy and touristy, while Difficult CG is more primitive with no electric hookups and only bathrooms and a faucet. Anyone with knowledge of these CG would be appreciated. Thanks Mark

The Frying Pan, Roaring River, and Crystal River are all located within an hour of each other in the Glenwwood Springs/Carbondale/Aspen area if you wanted to have a selection within a short drive. The Frying Pan and Roaring Rivers both have Gold Metal sections. A friend and I fished the Crystal River last summer with some success. We enjoyed it because of the no bait restrictions on the upper part, isolated from the bigger towns, availability of campgrounds, plenty of public access, and the scenery. If you want to check on a map, the river from Redstone to Marble is where we fished and is accessable to the public with lots of places to pull off the road. There are a couple National Forest Service campgrounds right on the river. I recommmend Bogan Flats about 30 minutes south of Carbondale.

I really don't think the fish care if you are sitting or standing!!

Do you use any sinkers with maribou jigs? What size? How far up the line? Do you use indicators? I don't think what I was throwing was the problem, I think it was the presentation, not getting deep enough, and when I went deep I lost my lure. After losing about $25-30 worth of fishing lures, a guy starts to wonder.........what the heck, this is getting expensive!!!

OK, I'm a bait chucker. The only time I fish with artificial bait is bass fishing on lakes with a plastic worm. I recently went thru the Greer to Turner section and not even sure if I had a nibble. Admittedly, I don't know how to use rapalas, rooster tails, etc. I did throw a crawdad imitation for awhile - first without any weight and then with a small split shot. I found with the split shot that if I put it too close to the lure, it didn't move in the water like it should. So moved it to about 14" up the line, but still no bites. Same with a minnow imitation - tried without weight, then small split shot, then bigger split shot, moved it up and down the line - nothing. With everything I threw, I tried different retrievals - sometimes slow, sometimes fast, sometimes let the current take it downstream, casting upstream, casting downstream, nothing! Any advice would be appreciated. I would like to fish that area more but I'm convinced I don't have enough knowledge to have any success with artificial baits. Also, you can assume that I don't know much, if you start talking wooly boogers, caddis, mayflies, etc., I have no friggin' idear what your talking about. I thought the Blue Ribbon area was beautiful, but if I don't catch fish, my trips thru the area will be minimal. Thanks, and with advice, remember K-I-S-S. Keep it simple stupid. Mark

Thanks for input but we don't care for the Forest Service campgrounds. We much prefer a gravel bar on the shoreline where we can get out of our lawnchair and get a line wet. We are familiar with the river except the lower part below Riverton. We are wanting to check that area out. I just want to make sure we are OK camping on gravel bars down there like we are in the trout areas. Is the Morgan Float Camp the same as what's called the Narrows? Isn't there 5 different springs right there together? I hear it is a beautiful area and neat place to camp.
-
My biggest concern was finding a place to camp between Riverton and HWY 142. We would surley spend the night somewhere about halfway and then another night at the Narrows.

OK we are talking about a summer float this year covering the entire length of the Eleven Point River in Missouri. The only sections I have not floated are the Cane Bluff to Greer section and the Riverton to Hwy 142 section, both which I believe are not in the Scenic Riverways designated areas. I am wondering if we will be OK camping on a gravel bar in these areas. I am thinking the trip would go something like this; Day 1 - Thomasville to Cane Bluff (water levels permitting) Day 2 - Cane Bluff to near Greer Springs Day 3 - Greer to near Turner Mill Day 4 - Turner Mill to near Whitten Day 5 - Whitten to Riverton Day 6 - Riverton to Hwy 142 bridge Day 7 - Hwy 142 to Arkansas line Will camping be a problem in the upper and lower sections?

If I remember right, it was below Stinking Pond about 1/2 mile

The river was about normal level and slightly stained, and a great sunshine day. A friend and I fished Saturday from Turner to Whitten. We caught enough fish to maintain our interest. Mostly 12'14" range with a couple very small trout that had to be reproduced in the river. Good day of fishing and floating. Several eagles were spotted throughout the day. Sunday we floated the Greer to Turner section. It was overcast and hi in the low 50's. I never caught a trout but had a few bites. Only thing I caught was a goggle eye.My friend didn't fair much better as he landed 1 14" trout and a smallmouth. The scenery on the Blue Ribbon Section is spectacular and again saw lots of eagles. We attributed our lack of success to the cool front moving through and, for myself, a lack of experience with artificial lures. I had a good time though, but afraid I will remain a bait chucker as first method of choice.

Looks like the river levels have started the spring roller coaster. Looks like it has risen this past week with some needed rainfall. Me and the Trout Whisperer are headed down Friday night. Hope the water is good, though I expect it to be a little off colored. Report will be added on our safe return.

Make that Tranquillity Place Cabin.

I just looked it up - Tanquillity Place Cabin is where we stayed.

Try the Cody Lodging Company - website can be found online. Privately owned cabins. See descriptions on the other thread inquiring about Yellowstone plans next to this thread.

I would suggest trying the Cody Lodging Company in Cody, WY. We found a place near Crandall Creek, WY, in late July 2009 for about $200 per night. It was a private cabin/house off of the Chief Joseph National Scenic Byway about 15 miles from Cooke City, MT - the NE entrance to Yellowstone. The North Fork of the Clark River follows the Chief Joseph Byway from Cooke City southward. Also near Cooke City, the Beartooth National Scenic Byway was about 10 miles from the cabin. Definitely the later in summer, the better. In mid July, most of the streams were still very fast. The Cody Lodging Company's website can be found online. We did stay in Dubois for a night on the Wind River, but the scenery is still mostly high plains and nothing like closer to Yellowstone. If passing thru Cody, I recommend the Cody Rodeo!! Great entertainment!!

Sounds like a good time!! But I'm sure if you took it easy on the cocktails at night, it would be easier to get up in the morning and catch the bus to the river.
-
God forbid you have to get out of your fancy smancy boat and get wet!!

It seems like from all reports that the fishing is outstanding this winter. Would you say it is normal for this time of year or is it exceptionally well right now? MAN, I'm sick of winter weather. I can't wait for warm spring and early summer days. Looking forward to getting the tent out of storage, load up the truck with canoe, cooler, camping gear, BBQ grill, and guitar and heading out for my favorite gravel bar (location withheld)!! It doesn't get any better than that!!

The only time I've floated from Thomasville down to Cane Bluff, we encountered cattle in the stream. Cow crap all over the place and in stream. Our last time of floating that section.

Just saying - affordability is major advantage for some who frequent the area. I wonder if the new owners would consider offering discounts for children under 16 to keep it as a cheap getaway for families.
