  1. It was good to meet you too Flyfshn. It was pretty tough fishing friday mourning, but I am glad you guys got a boat and got to catch some, you all had come a long way and deserved to catch some. They weren't supposed to be running water friday mourning, after me and my brother-in-law got there and seen the water rolling we just about turned around and went to get his boat. Maybe next time you guys come the water will be off all day and you can get some quality wadeing in. Have a good one, Tightline.
  2. Hey Jeremy, it was good to meet you today.I really appreciate all the good advise and pointers you gave me.Oh and thanks for the flys too.I'll try to put them to good use. I know that with any kind of fishing its easy to get stuck in a rut.You will always go back to what has been successful without giving something new a 100% try. Advise coming from tried and true trout veteran makes it easier to stick with. Man it was really nice wading Taney again!! Tightline.
  3. Crappie, I wish you wouldn't tell everybody about the light pole! Sounds like you had a great time.
  4. We saw 2 last Friday afternoon opposite side from fall creek that were every bit of 5 ft maybe longer. Now this may sound stupid but I think they were going through their spawning dance. If you've never seen gar spawn they kinda act like they are fighting each other.Nothing would surprise me on Taney. Just think how many eggs a 5 ft female gar could spew out all over the gravel bars,2 million, maybe more?Thats alot of good Trout food there, and even better after the eggs hatch and turn into fry! I'll bet a small yellow egg pattern might work well when them ole slimey gars are a spawning. I think the Great Blue Heron does more to hurt a fishery than anything that swims or flys.
  5. Kevinkirk, your so right about the new church pastors compared to the old bible beating, door nocking kind which is what my dad was.I remember us driving all over Taney County just for visitation, and to pick up a few kids to bring them to church. We use to get goverment issued comodities like cheese and eggs gave to us instead of money for tithing. Those were the real men of God. Trav, are you a Republican crying for taxation, thats a switch. I don't think any church or charity should be taxed no matter how big,as long as most of the money is not going into the pockets of the pastor or clergymen. The Billy Graham crusades were a good example of how it should be done. I have been a devoted Republican ever since I cast my first vote some 30 odd years ago, mainly because of the standing promise of a moral look of politics. But after the last 8 years seeing jobs lost, people suffering trying to make it on lower wages, while big buisiness,Oil,Gas,Pharmasuticals have rolled in billions of dollars,I now consider myself an Independent.I'm not sure who I will vote for just yet. In my opinion there needs to a third party, there's just too much difference between the Democrats and the Republicans for anything to ever get done. I was told by freind who is a Democrat in 2004 after I had just voted for George W. that if anyone who made less than 200K a year voted Republican that they were brain washed. I'm starting to see, that might be true.
  6. Your right Terry, all the times I have been to Taney I have never been checked or even seen an agent. You would think such a high traffic area for fishing would be watched a little closer, especially Outlet 1! But at the same time there were at least 4 others that were fishing right next to these guys and never said a word. Me, I am guilty of not being aware of whats going on around me because I am so zoned in on the fishing.
  7. Got down to Taney about 7:00 am friday mourning, and already about 10 vehicles in the lot. Fished down in front of #3 cable and didn't catch a thing.decided to walk up to outlet 1 and try to find a spot away from the crowd. The outlet was packed up close just like I figured, but my favorite spot out on the point just at the edge of the current was open.I noticed that 3 guys up in the outlet were just slaying the trout, and they were good ones to. After about an hour I heard one man who was spin fishing with his wife start telling the 3 guys across from him that those were all slot fish and were not supposed to be kept. One of the guys had held up a stringer full of nice 14-18 inch rainbows. Well I couldn't hear everything he said to them but he was not trying to be polite or cushy with them ,he was very stern and loud. I did hear him say " if you guys think they won't take you to jail you're badly mistaken, go up there and read the rules which you should have done before you started fishing". I have never seen fish taken off of a metal stringer so fast and there was a bunch, they tucked their tails and headed up the hill in a hurry. I talked for a minute to the man who gave the tongue lashing, and he said they stringing more snagged fish than ones that were caught right. I told him "way to go" give hum a thumbs up and headed home, and to my surprise those guys were still in the parking lot, I looked at their license plate,I'll just tell you this they had drove a long long way just to poach fish.
  8. Reckon there's any truth to that old saying, ( You ARE what YOU eat !! ) ???
  9. Excellent report Loo10! My bro-in-law and me were there Friday mourning at 7:00 am,we also had trouble with the jig bite,we caught some but decided to try our fly rigs.We threw weighted wooleys and started catching fish more regularly. About 10:00 I saw a guy catch a nice rainbow on floating stick bait,I thought it was too late for that but tied one on any way, about the 3rd cast I caught a nice 19 in bow from behind a big rock, and since we were making our last drift I just kept throwing it,caught a 20 in Brown and a few more bows. One fish made a swipe at it just above Lillys, didnt see anything but the flash, but that was enough,it was as thick as a boat paddle and almost as long,I just sat down and almost cried. A pretty good day,not the best, not the worst. I crush the barbs on my Trout stick baits, makes it much easier and less harmful to the fish,I don't fish with them very often. Those are some beautiful rainbows you and your buddy caught Loo10,way to go.
  10. Vonreed, last thursday when Leonard caught the big flathead I had 11 crappie and 5 whites.Just got back from camping at Truman State Park, the 4 ,5 and today.I caught a limit of crappie friday evening and 2 whites on chartreuse sm and beetles.Sat evening couldn't get much to bite they dropped the water and it seemed to hurt, nobody was catching much, left early about 9:00 pm so they may have bit later. By the way.City of Warsaw put on a fantastic fireworks display last night, the 5th,they shot them off the dam.And Truman State park has the best camping spots and cleanest facilitys of any camp ground I have been to. Hope everyone had a great 4th of July!! TL.
  11. Whack em, he is indeed a pretty good guy, and the more I think about him getting that fish in the more I realize what a huge task he accomplished. I'll bet his ( Leonards) head is as big as a basketball with all this praise he's getting.
  12. If you want a dog that will hunt hard and and find you some birds, and be a great pet and your best buddy as well then take a look at these babys. AKC Registered, champions on both sides of pedigrees Have had all their shots. $300 a piece. I own the Sire and he is a great hunter and my best buddy. If interested call the Dames owner at (417-725-3230) ask for Steven.
  13. Four of us fished at Warsaw last night (6/26)and had a pretty slow night of it.I suspected it might be tough after they had dropped the water level almost 4 feet the night before. One of my old time fishing buddys and co-workers broke the boredom when he hooked and landed a 30 lb Flathead, using 4 lb test and an ultralight. He kept saying he had something big and we all just kinda ignored him thinking he could handle it.Well when he finnally got it to the bank he said( guys I need some help ) in a very serious tone.Harper went and helped him and we all couldn't believe it when he lifted it out of the water. Kudos to Leonard for landing that monster with light weight equipment. He was using a purple beetle on a 1/16 ou head, and yes it was hooked in the mouth. We fished the north bank.
  14. WOW! its GILLZILLA, thanks for posting pic, beautiful fish!!
  15. My son a freind and me arrived at the tailrace a little before 6:00 pm and was surprised to actually find a place to stand. My son had only been fishing twice this year and wanted some fish to eat,so we tried the crappie. We caught them on and off till 10:00 pm and decided to quit.My son ended up with 14 crappie and 8 whites,I had 15 crappie and 7 whites,Harper had about 6 crappie and a 3lb hybrid plus had his line broke a few times. The crappie were all good size from 10 1/2 to 13 inchs,I had 1 that was only 9 3/4,but for the most part the crappie that my bunch have been catching were all good sized. They may feel like a dish towel pulling them but they eat really good, plus I still get a thrill when I see one turn up on its side and it looks you've got a hub cap hooked. Being a conservation guy my self(but I like to keep some to eat),Truman Tailrace is probably the last place I would worry about catching or keeping to many crappie.Infact they probably need to be thined out more if bigger fish is what you want.I think the 9 inch length is good for up there. You're never gonna see the big slabs there like you see on Bullshoals or TR,but the numbers are going to be better. Hybrids, now thats a different story, way to many are put on stringers thinking they are whites.I always throw my small hybrids back. It was a good trip,we fished the north side by the handicap dock, sliders and SMs were the best lures, the flood gates were open and the water was stained. Slider and Vonreed were also up there,I know Slider had a good hybrid and some crappie and whites not sure what VR had.
  16. I have always wanted to fish Crane Creek.I've seen it many times down at the mouth where it flows into James. By the way ,it was good to meet you Troutbum4wt,Its neet to put faces with these names. Have a good one. TL.
  17. Yes it was alot of cleaning. Vonreed, it was really good to meet you,and fish with you finally. I want to let every one know that this guy can put the fish on the bank. I was standing right beside him and he was catching 3-4 to my 1.I think he got tired of hearing me whine and cry,Slider had a spot open up by him so I moved down by him and finally got in the groove.
  18. Five of us, Vonreed,Slider,me and two other fishing buddys piled in one vehicle and headed for Warsaw thursday afternoon. It was crowded but we all managed to get a spot.We started catching as soon as we got there(about 3 pm) and alot of what was being caught was hybrids. This is my forth year fishing the tailrace, and I don't remember seeing as many big hybrids caught as there was thurs afternoon. But the whites and crappie were hitting well also.Everyone was catching some fish. Vonreed had 4 good hybrids and Slider had 2,but I think Slider nudged out for the big fish of the night by a little. All of us had a blast and caught lots of fish,I didn't catch any big wipers but had a nice 21 inch walleye to go with my mess.We brought home around a 110 - 115 fish.We fished the north side, caught fish on just about anything and seen them caught on everything.Like spooks, sliders, swimming minnows, tube jigs, rapalas, sassy shads, tiny torpedos, slab hunters, slab slayers, etc, etc. It was just one of them days.Heres some pics of our mess and the 2 biggest hybrids. The water was calm and no flood gates. Three of us went back today, flood gates were open, water was turbulent and very stained. We had 5 whites and 1 crappie.Didn't see very many of anything caught, but there was plenty of people.
  19. Sounds like fun Vonreed.Glad your son did good,it may not be to much longer before he starts beating ole dad with that fishing rod!
  20. We had intentions of going up to the dam and trying to catch some of those wallys and whites before Leonard catchs all of them. But we stopped to fish before we got there and my partner hooked a nice fat Brown and that was all she wrote we stayed down stream. Leonards just killing me with his reports. Structure Web!
  21. Actually we caught them from Koa to Fall creek with no particular spot better, except for the island below koa, where there is a seam and the currents meet, that was pretty good.
  22. We(my brother-in-law and me) started about 3 pm today at Roark creek.Water was murky and fairly warm.Didn't catch much on our fly rods, a few small bass and some bluegills.Decided to run up to the KOA and drift fish a while, boy I mean thats some quick drifting,it didn't take us long to give up on our fly rigs and tie 1/8 ounce jigs to our spin rigs.We only caught 22 between us on 5 drifts, but they were all good quality fish between 14-18 inchs except for one stocker. The thing that surprised me was that more than half were Browns and they were all good 16-18 inchers. It was great fun, except ,I lost every 1/8 ounce jig I own.White was the best. I couldn't believe how much it has changed down there,it will be interesting to see up by the outlets and the rebar hole when the water goes down.
  23. Smallmouth man,I know what the state record SM weighed, thats why this particular big fish story stuck in my mind.I heard it from more than one person also, and having fished that hole many many times,it wouldn't surprise me at all. That hole is over looked by James river floaters and wade fisherman won't bother with the long walk to get to it because there's not any good water to fish above it. My mistake for not putting(supposedly caught) in the post.I bet you would be surprised just how many near record and even record fish are taken home, fillet and eaten without a second thought. SMM, have good one, my friend.
  24. That low water bridge is gone,Stone county has built a real nice bridge there now. 2 summers ago there was a local lady that caught a 7lb smallie in that big hole at the mouth of Finley,if I remember right it was caught using a big nightcrawler.
  25. I'm with Bill,it doesn't take 30 seconds to click on the Tablerock forum and see if any body else has posted about loading ramps,or what they are biting on,or where at,ect. Hog don't pay any attention to Bill being kinda abrasive at times, its just one of those things that happen when you get to a certain age!!
