  1. Cant tell you how it is now, but back in the mid 1990's Council Grove KS Federal Resevor had only one duck hunter family, me and the son. We almost always limited and those ducks were flat stupid or just did not have any pressure. We set up on the north end of the lake, at the back end of a cove, when lake level is low the cove in not waist deep, if high we setup on the point about 1/3rd across fromt heleft in the light blue. Lots of Canada geese can show up too. There is a road from just east of Keslo, you can see some awesome deer in that area too. I hunted this area very hard for several years. Most of the Duck hunters from Junction City and Manhatten hunt the two lake nearer those towns Tuttle Creek and MIlford. There is also a city lake but I never hunted it. http://www.swt.usace.army.mil/LIBRARY/Webh...ouncilgrove.pdf
  2. I was watching Winkleman and they were catching some awesome browns anyone evver been there int he winter to fish? Yea I know its cold but man to catch 10 borwns in a day all over 10 pounds!!!
  3. We have a favorite swim bait for trout on white river, but out of every ten maybe three have the right action and sound. Once we find the action and sound that works, seems the color being worn or new dont matter sometimes the more worn the better the bait catchs fish.
  4. Ok I have never dropped brush in the lake for a brush pile some years ago we just wired some rocks on cedars and dropped them under Grandpas boathouse, but never really did anything else. With Crappie being the goal do any of you really know whatit takes to make a great crappie pile? I have seen three and four cedars wired together while scuba diving but never see any reall fish around them. is there a size thats better. say twenty trees? or is that to big? I have a hillside full of cedars so have way more than plenty. Anybody have any ideas? John
  5. Wow do I need to get to the river. Three trips to the hospital in two weeks for a monster 22mm kidney stone just aint the same as wetting aline in the river. We normally fish at lest every weekend either Saturday or Sunday. We had rather be on the river thinking about God than in church thinking about fishing. At any rate have had ESWL and that did not destroy the stone, along with at stent, then last Wed. had laser and another stent. I will tell you those who have not had a stone the pain just dont go away and if the stone dont pass its really going to hurt. The stent is not a joke either runs fromt he kidney to the bladder, likehaving a telphone pole shoved up you twinkie, spasms when you have to hit the head too. I have decided if all is well after the Monday Dr appointment that I may take a week off and go fishing, man life is to short to spent it dry docked. JOhn
  6. How much did the spotted bass weigh? Both MDC and AGFC should work at stocking bass, its the bread and butter of Bull Shoals and Table Rock. Some years ago the AGFC stocked Florida strain LMBass in Greer's ferry and they did great but somewhere they decided that Greers would be a better smallmouth lake. I thought the Florida strain did pretty well with many 12 to 13 lb bass caught. but who knows what goes thru thier mind.
  7. Man and the best Harrison could do back in my day was allow me to take Home Ec. all the guys lol but thats were the girls were. Man o man fishing as a sport I would have ben a four year Letterman!!!
  8. If you are going to fish White River, I would go to Wildcat Shoals near Cotter and Gassville, walk down stream and watch for the light colored rocks on the bottom this is where the fishing starts at WCS. You have about a mile and some change where you can wade. I have caught bows, browns and lots of small Cutthroats there There are lots of rocks across the shoals that harbor fish. Just below Cotter is Roundhouse shoals the road runs along side for a long ways. lots of fish in round house on the near and far side of the island. Watch the water level or you could be stranded across the river. Ranchette has been remodeled and the shore fishing has sucked since. not a lot of room for bank fishing. If the wtaer is going to be low you can cross the river and go down stram and fish thru Rough Hole lots of fish but angain if the water comes up you are stranded. Rim Shoals offers lots of small fish that will eagerly hit a spinner with a single barbless hook, borwns bows and cuts there. Catch and release only White Hole if you go down stream about 1/2 mile is pretty good on top of the shoals water is about 12inches deep and lots of fsih forage in them. I have seen some monster browns in the White Hole area close to the ramp. Thats about it from the bank waling for an old veteran that cant walk far. JOhn
  9. ON another site when the ads pop up if you click them then the site gets some money. Funny thing is its a hunting site and PETAS ads pop up when the owner tol dus this we try to click the ads. Is that true for this site also?
  10. Nothing to measure by. Fish can be the same size and weigh a lot different. Fish they have lived their life in moving water can out weigh slow water fish by a lot. the faster water make for more muscle and muscle is more dense than fat. Plus what rav says may hold some fact. I have seen fish of the same size weigh twolbs and many ounces different, largemouth and small mouth bass.
  11. Vanish gold, mostly in 6 and 8 lb. Wall world has quit selling it in the 250 yard spools. I have had some knots just slip right thru, but thats retied before making a cast. The only other problem I have with any of the flouracarbons is sometimes the break aways away from the lure. Its cost me a couple large browns and several lures. Its truely invisible to humans when in the water and must be hard for fish to see too as we do pretty good using it better than the monolines maybe its lack of stretch. It does cost more.
  12. This time of year can be cold as mentioned, the Gulf can be cool the water can drop into the 50's. but the fishing around the oil rigs can be hot!! Capt Troty Wetzel out of Vience will do what it takes to put you on fish. We have used him several times and even for spear fishng trips. I know yu can get into some big Amber jack, I maean big AJs, lots of smaller fish, maybe even red snapper. depends on whats legal and in season. Common trigger fish are pretty darn good eating!!! Lime Green Power bait eggs works pretty well for those. Cobia are in and out. Here is alink to their site. http://www.rodnreel.com/xtreme/ Good people and they will work hard for you. We booked three days last trip and spent the night out but it was warmer and we were way to hell ooutin the gulf and some of the guys hooked up with bill fish and one had a monster tuna. The motels in Vience are scarce so be sure to book them asap. John
  13. Just wondering how badley their store was damaged in the twister. have seen some of it on TV. great place to eat we at Saturday before the Twister. Wife was almost to their place going to pickup a togo order when the twister hit, she saw the cloud and decided to turn around and wait until the rain stopped. I was home nursing a kidney stone. Back to Stephens D7S bbq. John
  14. Depends on how you want to fish. Right now we have plenty of water and using a small 1/32 maribou Road Runner dropping it into the deep front of the holes you can do really well. Had a client bring in a super 4lb smallie today, he used a 1/4 oz white maribou. Light line and slow is the key. April, May will be good, if you are able to watch the water and catch it turning aqua color after a rain and dropping a CD-3 gold Rapala in the shoals will be a killer. Later in July and August the water will be low but you can catch a lot of smallie almost one per cast but they will not be large maybe a pound, using a floating BPS lazer eyes in gold, blueback and shallow bill, the deepr holes will be fine with the deep diving in the same color. You can flip the lure out and just twitch it and the smallies will bust the crap out of it, be ready for two at a time near stumps and rocks. Tight lines JOhn
  15. Have not been able to login since the change. Finally had to get Phil to reset for me. We fished the area last Sunday, did pretty good caught lots of fish lost one nice brown. Made the run up stream and floated down Seems flourocarbon line either works great of snaps when you lest expect it. I change it often but dont make any difference. Anyway we hit the water about 1 and fished until dark caught a better bunch of fish. Kept two limits to smoke, Oh my I like fish fried but this smoking with fresh green oak for a couple hours I can tell you they are great. temp is about 300F during the smoking, I cut the fresh oak limb cross grain in one inch rounds. gets more smoke and sure does the fish great. I am working on dialup and will be trying to post some pics of the last years fishing trips. I also quit using Wal Mart for film, took a roll in that had some nice Cutthroats and browns on it, well they sent it off, was suppose to be next day. they got it back logged it in and gave it away to someone else all in the same week!!! JOhn
  16. That day we fished the big chute beloow Cotter dwon to the catch and release area. Yea we release a lot of fish, so theres no problems with having a few next week. We did two weeks of tagging fish last summer with orange plastic tags like is used for clothing and we have not caught them a second time. We have seen a few swim by or under the boat with the orange tags but not many. Wife is down with the flu and I need to have LITHOTRIPSY for a stone, spent last night in the hospital with it. so I think we will miss this weekend. We fish different areas and have about the same luck everywhere. We have fished the upper end of TACOMO and done pretty good but we throw a lot of crankbaits, the smmall rebel crawdad works really well in light green up there.
  17. Wife and I headed out to White River, great day and man did the sun feel good on these old bones. SW power admin, said there was zero units on line, we arrived a the river and there were two units running and the fish were HUNGRY!!! We quit counting at 50 fish all but one were rainbows. we did keep two limits (to hell with catch and release, I catch and eat) nice limit of fish from 14 to 17 inches. This batch is headed to the smoker tomorrow!!! Standard fillet, leaving the skin on, then removing the pin bones for bonesless fillets. Mild peper and salt allow this to sit ont the fillet for about 60 minutes the salt firms the meat a bit more. Fresh hickory and get the smoker smoking well. cook about 60 minutes at a medium heat and hummmm good.
  18. I always fill those out, with outher peoples names. Yo know what they say about paybacks!!! Yep its payback time foe some LOL.
  19. I have an older Eagle, uses two six volt batteries. Works very good about like the 100.00 Humminbirds. My son lols says everytime its makes a sound we catch fish. I keep it with the hopes of going back to Canada someday. Get a name brand!!
  20. I would love to see a few close up pics of the brookie. Good clear pics are hard to come by. Thanks John I would love to see a few close up pics of the brookie. Good clear pics are hard to come by. Thanks John
  21. Does anyone know where I can buy 1/32 oz white maribou road runners?? BPS dont stock them and Wally world is zero hope. Thanks JOhn
  22. Wow, wish it had been videoed. Many eyars bad, Ft Riley MWR had boats for rent out on one of the local lakes. We rented a large deck boat, it was very underpowered a 50HP on a boat rated for 120 I think it was. Anyway the wind came up and we were acorss the lake, had life jackets on the kids. as we crossed the lake headed for saftey of the marina I tried to keep the motor trimmed and the nose up, a huge wave came over the front and washed everything off the rear to include the kids, I grabbed one as they floated by, Ray grabbed one. As the weight of the water hit the rear of the beck boat the nose stood up even higher and it was just seconds until the the boat was half under water nose up. It only takes a second for all this to happen. Wiith those trees maybe the load shifted or as they were dropping trees who knows what. As long as noone was hurt everything else can be replaced.
  23. Pretty sad. Hard to imagine seeing your friend drown and not being able to do anything about it.
  24. Hey those are mannatees and not mermaids!!!
