Ban The Sale Of Wild Animals? What About Fish?
timsfly replied to Tim Smith's topic in Conservation Issues
What will I do with my Tiger I take with me to Crane, I use him just to kill snakes and meth heads when they get to close, He's such a good boy quiter than a .45 -
Beads and soft weight usually, or a combination of the two, sometimes an intermediate line or a sinking tip. Just tie it on a #20 nymph hook, just tie it smaller.
-
I went down this morning just to break in a new 7' 4wt quad I just purchased, and I think I broke it in right I caught a whole bunch this morning on #20 streamers and #16 buggers, black and black/olive seemed to be the best colors for me to day, I started using a apricot san juan worm when I caught this brown. I caught a lot of fish on different flys today but most on the bugger, and 5X tippet. Saw a lot of nice browns today, and a few really fat rainbows, I worked my way down nearly to the boat ramp, saw a lot of nice fish that away.
-
I carry an intermediate and a sinking tip for my fly lines, I don't use them all the time, but at Roaring, Crane, Bennett, and some of the other small creeks I fish they can come in handy, usually a 9' 6X leader and a floating line is all I need, I prefer the soft lead over split shot, but some type of weight is needed sometimes.
-
I use the #16's and smaller buggers all the time, on crane, taney Roaring, Bennett the seem to work everywhere for me, I've kept #14's in the shop for years, but on occasion will tie some #16's or smaller for a customer, here is the #20 on a TMC 3769 and the #16 on a TMC 5263, or it might be a diachi hook, not sure, but it is a 3X hook I use them with and with out beads, just depends on how fast I want them to sink, I had a bit of good luck with some #18 brown buggers on the san juan this year, and just tore them up on 20's at taney last week

I have two TV tyers they are great I've tied on one for 20 years now -
I fished after I closed this after noon caught 20 or so on small eggs(glo-balls), crackle backs, parachute Adams, and a few on a brassie. Roaring River Resort is just south of my shop, nice people run it, haven't heard anything bad about the place, usually if its nasty I hear about that 417-847-3235 my shop is just a mile outside the north entrance.

Charlie Reading has it, at his fly shop I've used acetate floss in the past, they are pretty, but I never had much luck with them.
-
Fishing has been great, water is in good shape.
-
Roaring is in great shape, water is up 6" and is still clear. The water level is almost normal now, still catching trout on caddis, para Adams, beetles, copper johns, pheasant tails, zebra midges are all working great.
-
Hackle is still out there, I just received 12 grizzly dry fly capes, and they are great quality they run 65.00 to 49.00 if you need something like that holler. They are whiting and some I got from Rumpf & Son COME GET EM while I have them. I'm on the san juan fishing, but Duane is in the shop everyday except wednsday.
-
I caught, browns, rainbows, walleye, bluegill, bass and a sucker on taney the other day, would that be a grand slam ? or did I need a whitebass, a smallmouth bass, and a catfish to round it out ? just wondering, the fishing has been great though.

Fishing is better than ever on roaring river, lots of nice fish being caught, I know of a 7 and 9 and several 3 pound + fish being caught just this past week. Still great dry fly fishing, tricos in the mornings, caddis, and B.W.O's most of the afternoons, some midge activity most of the day, still catching a lot of fish on beetles and hoppers, and ants. Cracklebacks will catch fish most days, and so will zebra midges, small pheasant tails, small woolybuggers and gray sow bugs are pretty hard to beat right now. I'm using 9' 7X leaders right now, if you are using buggers, and larger nymphs, you can get by with 6X fluorocarbon right now, and if you just fish the riffles, 6X fluoro will work all day for you. Tan zebra midges are working well, the chamois worm is really good right now, and I'm catching a few on red san juan worms, but the dry fly fishing is exceptional right now, come over and have some top water fun. Black spinners are working every day right now, and green and brown are pretty good also. Plastics will catch fish every day right now, but use 2 lb low vis or ultragreen line for best results. Orange, white, cheese and pink is good for the worms right now, and for the eggs, brown, white orange, and flo. yellow. Marabou jigs and micro jigs are great right now, olive, and white are the most productive colors, but on a overcast day the black/yellow has been good, marabou jigs use olive, white, black/yellow and ginger, these colors are working. Still fish being caught on small crankbaits and spoons, these fish better in the deeper sections, but they are working pretty good. In zone 3 nightcrawlers and powerbait paste or nuggets has been very good, good luck on the river, and remember, the water is very low and very clear, the lighter the line the better right now, if you got the right equipment, 1lb line will catch a lot of fish in a day, good luck.

6 or 7 pound fish won't hold a candle to this fish, I saw the pics on Facebook it is very large.
-
I've caught enough 10 plus rainbows and browns on the white to make me a believer. My best on white so far has been a 16 pound rainbow, biggest brown has been 13 pounds, thanks for adding them to your poll.

Glad your ok, heal quickly.

Catch And Releaser's Should Stop At Their Limit?
timsfly replied to FishinCricket's topic in General Angling Discussion
I went fishing with an old person today and he and I in about 4 hrs caught and released 60+ trout, and I would still be there if not for an appointment I had to get to, I like to C&R till I'm just to tired to set the hook one more time, then I leave. Fish till you drop. -
None of what you have listed are my favorites, we caught 60+ on wine, and white San Juans today.

Catch And Releaser's Should Stop At Their Limit?
timsfly replied to FishinCricket's topic in General Angling Discussion
Sorry, I'll continue to catch & release till I'm done fishing, now on the wild creeks I try to fish when the waters are cooler, early morning is my favorite time, and of course winter time. I will not fish for any fish if I think they are susceptible to being stressed, I think if a fisher person takes care in releasing their catch, then by all means catch all you can, I'm out there to have fun. -
Water is still very low and very clear, the recent rains brought the river up just a bit, but it is falling steadily and will soon be where it was before it rained. Use 2 or 3 pound line, nothing heaiver will work real good, 2lb is the best. Stay away from the camo lines, and the blue or white lines, they suck right now, stick with Maxima or some of the fluorocarbons on the market now days. I'm fishing 9' 7X leaders most of the time right now, 9' 6X when fishing bigger flies and I'm using 6X fluorocarbon tippets when fishing nymphs, most of the time. Water is perfect for dry fly fishing and sight fishing with small flies and jigs, lots of fish still being caught on hoppers, beetles, caddis, ants, crackle backs, blue wing olives, tricos, and adams. All these will catch fish every day right now. Tricos are short lived, daylight till about 9 a.m. I've been fishing a lot in the mornings using small baby buggers and nymphs, pheasant tails and sow bugs are best for me right now, but I've been doing well with a small black, or a small olive baby bugger. I fished a bit the other afternoon using a crackle back, grizzly/holographic green #14, and caught over 30 in 3 hrs, the trout were really liking it that day. San juan worms, in red, orange, flo. green and brown are still working very well, as are the chamois worms, pellet flies tied in dk brown are very good up near any of the hatchery outlets, I like the smaller ones the best, but all the sizes catch trout. Woolies in black, brown and in ginger have all been working well the past few weeks, I've even caught a few trout on small bluegill poppers this past week, I think they are hitting them for hoppers. Plastic baits are the way to go if you just want a few trout to take home for dinner, the eggs in white, orange, and flo. yellow have been good, brown works well but best up near the hatchery. Worms in cheese, orange, pink, and white have been good the past few weeks. Spinners in brown, black, ginger, and olive have been the best for the past few weeks. Small crankbaits are still working, rebel crawfish, rapala minnows and about any small 3" and smaller crankbaits work. Marabou and micro jigs are very good if you know how to fish them, olive, white, tan, black, black/yellow and brown/yellow are and have been the best colors most of the year this year, I think a small olive or tan micro will catch fish almost anytime. If you are in zone 3 and wanting to fish bait, then nightcrawlers, corn, crickets or powerbait paste or nuggets always work pretty good donw there. Good luck on the river. Tim Homesley

Begginer With Question With Grizzly Hackle
timsfly replied to joe2011's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
Charlie Reading at Bennett Springs has some grizzly necks, necks are great for drys it was all we had until Hoffman started breeding some Roosters that produced dry fly saddles, Hoffman, is now whiting farms Good luck with the tying -
They still stock below the park, once a month Curry bridge, is the last place the MDC stocks, from there RR is considered lake, all lake regulations apply below Curry bridge, curry bridge is a good mile above the 86 bridge.
