I'll keep my eyes open for it, you never know someone could have turned it in. Call 417-847-2330 and see if some one turned it in. Or call the hatchery people turn things in up there sometimes. 417-847-2539.

I use a straight eye mustad hook, and put some hackle on it, and you have a leagle lure for the fly areas. Take the treble hook off and put the single hook fly on the cleo and go fish.
-
If you fish a little cleo or a kastmaster you will lose one now and again, I fish them some when the water is high. Fish them like a jig sometimes, I cast accross and upstream, let them sink and work them back with a jigging type of action. In the big hole up by the hatchery, I throw them in, let them sink deep(count to 10) and then reel them in reel slow, pumping the rod just a bit, trying to imitane a wounded or dead minnow. I use them all the time in shoal creek and flat creek, I have put single hooks, and feathers on them for years for customers, who fish them in the fly area and they work great.

June 30th Fishing Report, Roaring River State Park
timsfly replied to timsfly's topic in Roaring River State Park
The late aftenoon is my favorite time to beetle fish, but they wil take them about anytime right now. -
Well the rains came and went last week, and the river rose a few inches and got muddy, it is a bit off colored now, sight fishing can be done but only in a few areas. The river is getting better everyday, I went down this morning, about 7:30 and caught 5 on a copper john in about an hour of fishing, missed several also. Yesterday evening I landed 7 on a black beetle, and missed a few other than those. The caddis hatches are still going strong as are the tricos in the mornings, and you can catch fish most all day long on adams, elk hair caddis, beetles, stimualators, griffiths gnats(slower waters), renegades and we are still catching a few on hoppers. If you prefer nymphs, then you are in luck, copper johns, pheasant tail nymphs, sow bugs, prince nymphs and brassies are all producing right now, I fish most of these in a #14 or a #16 right now. Zebra midges trailed behind any of the previous flies mentioned are working well, as are micro eggs. Egg patterns, woolybuggers, woolyworms, and san juan worms have all taken some nice fish this week. If you are fishing lures, then a spoon is a good choice, the little cleo, kastmaster, colorado, and the phobe spoons are all good, I prefer gold over silver. Small crankbaits like wee craws, rapalas, crickhoppers, and about any small minnow patter 3" or smaller work pretty good in the murky water we have right now. Roostertails are still a good early morning choice, green, black, skunk, and white are what I suggest you use right now. Fishing with the crankbaits and spoons, 3 or 4 lb line is ok, but when fishing the smaller lighter lures, 2lb is still best, don't go any heavier than 3lb right now, and stay away from blue, clear/blue or braided lines, they don't work so well here at the park, your best choices are maxima, p-line, or vanish. Marabou jigs are still catching alot of fish, black/yellow, olive, white, tan, and brown have all been good colors. If you are fishing salmon eggs, white, brown, flo. yellow and the orange are working the best. If you are fishing the plastic worms, then the cheese yellow, orange, orange/white, or the pink have all been working very well all week. Nightcrawlers in zone 3 have been effective, as has the rainbow powerbait paste, some good fish being caught on corn also. good luck see ya on the river.

I used this one most of the day, I used green, brown and black beetles. http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=P3160022.flv

Crane flooded something terrible today, won't be fishable for a week or so, it is high and clay red right now.
-
I drive by the pine trails rv park a lot and it is very well kept, so it would be a good choice, you will be 30 some miles from crane, 30+ miles to Neosho(hickory creek) and only about 8 miles to capps creek, so it wouldn't be a bad RV site to base camp out of.
-
we had 2.5" of rain here last night at Roaring River, the water is murky and up a bit but we are not flooded, the rains are supposed to move on out of the area by 7:00 a.m. so we should be fine. The river, if the rains quit, should be in good shape by this evening and could be in great shape by tomorrow, the river clears up quickly when it is just runoff water making it murky.
-
I like ants to, just eaiser to see beetles now You should have a great trip, plenty of fish in the fly area.

Fished montauk today, had a blast, not many people on the stream, had it to myself for several hrs. I fished the C&R area first and then on to the flys only area, caught over 50 fish today and had 3 very nice 18"+ fish 1 was a brown and two were rainbows, all on beetles, I caught most of my fish on beetles today, brown, black and green beetles all worked very well, I missed a lot but landed plenty, I stood in one hole and landed 15 in about an hour and a half and most of them on a beetle, I was fishing the #10 my favorite size. The water was very clear, I sight fished a bit, caught several on a white brassie, and on a cream colored san juan worm. Here are some pics, it was a good day, I need to get up there more often. I put the little rainbow on because he had great color and he hated green beetles, tried to kill mine http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=P6260031.jpg http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=P6260037.jpg http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=P6260032.jpg

The river just keeps getting better every week, the last rains missed us again, and the river is in fine shape, with the water getting clearer, the use of 7X (2lb line) becomes more important, I think it will catch you more fish right now than 3 or 4 lb line (6X or5X) and stay away from the blue or clear blue lines or any other line that looks blue or white on your reel, these spook fish in the clear water that we have right now. Dry fly fishing has been really good, beetles, caddis, blue wing olives and tricos have all been good. Ants, hoppers, stimulators, and humpys have all been good in the afternoons. Nymph fishing is still just as good as it has been, copper johns, pheasant tails, burlaps, micro eggs, and small zebra midges have all been working great, brassies, and woolybuggers have also been very effective, but the woolybugger is still the best fly to use all day long if you only have one fly to fish. Plastic worms are still tearing the trout up, the pink/white, orange, and the cheese yellow are still very good. Plastic eggs have been working great as usual, the white, orange, and brown have been working best. Marabou jigs are great now, with the clearing water we are able to sight fish again, and the micro jigs in white, tan, black/yellow and olive have been working better than ever, if you like regular jigs, then black/yellow, white, brown and tan are the ones to use, 1/32, 1/64, and the 1/100 mini jigs have bee working best. Roostertails are great early morning flies, the brown, black, and the white have been really good. Spoons continue to work well, small gold, or silver work very well all day long, some of the more colorful spoons work better when the sun is up, the brown trout spoon was the best producer last week. Glo-balls, grubs, thread jigs, and small micro jigs were very good in the fly area for the spin fisherman, set these up with a cork and fish them about 3' deep right now, fish them on the far bank, and if the cork even bobbles a bit, set the hook. Good fish are caught this way every day. Zone 3, powerbait paste in yellow or rainbow. Nightcrawlers and corn are also good producers. Good luck this week on the river. Tim's Fly Shop Tim Homesley

Anchor On A Solo Canoe
timsfly replied to joeD's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
I use a section of log chain for my 10 ft canoe, and I carry a brush anchor with me, that is all I've ever needed on the small lakes and streams where I go. I tie the log chaing to 20ft achor rope, but I hardly ever need that much length -
You know everyone has that special place to get away, no one asking anything of you, just yourself out in woods or on a stream, just that speical private time everyone needs sometimes. This is my special place I go, now some of you will think you know of this place, but you don't, only a few ever see this gem, there is no public access and no bridges cross this little piece of water, I'm not the only one that uses this little waterway, there are few locals, mostly kids that swim in its cool inviting waters on those hot summer days, I get on the water early, never have seen a soul while fishing this water, I don't catch those big fish like the trout at taney or the state parks, but it is mine alone. The trout I catch are small pretty and never, well hardly ever bothered by anybody, but me and a few herons, and I'm sure a few of the young local boys give it a try once in awhile. I follow this little stream, it is only yards deep most of the time, and give it a try once or twice a year, sometimes I'll go a few years between visits, I fished it a few weeks ago, walked a good 2 miles of stream, never saw a track, and saw very little trash, it is very clean by stream standards. It is as pretty as crane, and just as cold, but few people ever realize there are trout in there, I spent the better part of a wed. on this little stream and it was as good a day as I've had in a long time, I wish I could take friends there, but I was told not to by the owner that has given me permission to cross his property, I take him a few flies a few times a year, and he in turns lets me fish, never really caring if am catching fish or not, his mind is on his cattle and crops he works hard on every year. I use his land to get away, to clear the mind, he has the most beautiful stream on his land and he never even looks at it except to see how high the water has risen, he just doesn't know what he has. I fished this little stream and caught only 12 fish in a days fishing, and was very happy with that number, none were large, the biggest might have been 14" and he was a monster, he came out of a hole not much bigger than a 5 gallon bucket, but he was king of that hole. It was a most rewarding day, I hope it remains the same forever, or at least I hope I never see it change, for now it is very protected by the farmers and there farms, and the fact that it is hard to find and it isn't on any map I've found, I'm very lucky I stumbled accross this gem 25 years ago, thank you Glen for telling me of this place and talking that farmer into letting me use his stream, thanks for the good times.

That was probably my fault, as I gave Phil a lot of his info. Only the upper part of zone 2 is C&R flies only, from the F-Hwy down to the old dam is the regular part of zone 2 (catch and keep) flies only, sorry for the confusion, but the maps look great, Phil has done a great job on them.
-
Wading has never been allowed in zone 1, in zone 2, from Dry hollow all the way to the end of where the kids wade, fisherman can now wade fish, the upper 1/2 of zone 2 is the C&R area, and from just below the F-Hwy bridge, down to just above copper head bend is fishing and wading, but also the swimming area for campground 2 and 3. Also you can wade all of zone 3, and it is best fished in this manner, except for few holes, by wading. Hope that helps. Don't know why wading was never allowed, but most of the holes are deep and not very wide, wading wouldn't really help over most of zone 1, and zone 2, when the water is very low, like last year wading would really have been of some use. Good luck, holler if you have any more questions.

It was fast thismorning, but not that easy, I fished the middle section above town this morning, only landed 4 trout, nothing very big, I did see a trout(following my bugger) that might have gone 16" + but he turned off at the last moment, and didn't see him again. I caught most of my fish this morning on a # 10 very bushy hares ear, 3 on that fly and the last one on a red san juan worm. I had a 5/32 tungsten bead on the hares ear, just to get it down in the deeper part of the runs(this is where the fish seemed to be today) and on the san jua worm I had it tied on a 1/64 oz. jig head. The creek is in good shape, everything I caught looked healthy, all the trout I caught today were 10" and smaller. Water is running very clear, it is up a bit but not to bad, take a few extra sinkers with you. I couldn't get a fish to come up today, but I'll bet they would this afternoon, but I have stuff to do this afternoon, so I'll let someone else play with them this fine afternoon, this is great weather we are having.

Great see ya on the water one of these days.

I won't kill a snake, I don' t have any kids around so I don't have to worry about that. I have rat terrier that hates snakes and has killed her share, she keeps the yard clear of snakes, lizards, and chipmunks, her most hated of enemies. I pass snakes all the time on crane and flat creek and even at the parks, never had any trouble with them yet, I get spooked sometimes when one splashes into the creek between my boots, but I get over it, they were here first. I have the Simms Snake bite gaurds on my waders, I think Michale sells this option out of his store in springfield. In my old shop there was a nice big king snake that lived under the ice machine, in the two years he was around the snakes dissapeared and the lizards became mighty rare, he must be gone, the lizards are back in great #'s

That is the rattleheaded copper snake, very rare indeed I see those on crane over 10 foot long and usually eating baby calves.

The fishing has been really great this week, the big rains all missed us last week, we had a bit of heavy rain before the weekend, but it only effected the river for a short time, the river was in great shape all weekend. The dry fly fishing has been getting betters, we are still catching trout on beetles, ants, adams, lt. cahills, stimulators, and on small trico's in the mornings. Good nymphing, the water is perfect for nymphing right now, the biggest problem I see is people are not putting enough weight on their lines, even while fishing a bead head you need a shot 10" or so up from your fly, the weight helps get the fly down where the fish are and it helps slow down the drift a bit, I have been using two flies most of the time, a copper john/zebra midge, or a pheasant tail/ micro egg combo is my favorite right now, we are still catching trout on sow bugs, hares ears, burlaps and soft hackles are good most of the day, a glo-ball or san juan worm will work most all day long. Woolybuggers are still very good, I'm using the bigger #8's or #10's early in the day, and when the sun is up good and high, I'll start using #14 woolybuggers, I like olive, black, and ginger the best right now, dk. brown has been good also. Marabou jigs in olive, black/yellow, white, dk. brown and ginger have all been good, 1/32 and 1/16 are working well right now. Powereggs, and power worms in yellow, white, orange and chartruse have all been good, and the hatch brown eggs are working better than ever right now. Black, brown, olive, and white roostertails have all been working well. If you are using crankbaits then the small rapalas, and small crankbait crawdads have all been good. Spoons are working very well this year, the high water is great spoon water, a spoon sinks fast and the fish love em. If you are fishing in zone 3, nightcrawlers, corn, cheese, and white powerbait has all been good, good luck on the river this week.
