Sorry, I would have posted sooner but my dad has had a heart attack and I've been busy. Great dry fly fishing right now, blue wing olives, Adams, caddis, and griffiths gnats have been good, in the afternoon, as it warms up, the beetle, and ant bite has been good, 9' 7X leaders are your best bet, water is low and clear, zebra midges, pheasant tail nymphs, sow bugs, copper johns, small egg patterns, and San Juan worms have all been good the past few weeks, good luck.

Roaring River Still Fishing Well,we Got Some More Browns
timsfly replied to timsfly's topic in Roaring River State Park
Your welcome Tommy. -
Conservation dropped another 500 browns into Roaring River a few days ago, they are all over the place, a lot were stocked in the C&R area and into zone 3, browns still have to be 15" before they can be kept, but most stocked were about 12"-14" none I've caught have been over 14" but they will grow quickly in our sculpin rich river. Still getting fish on drys, the cooler weather will slow the hoppers up a bit, but ants and beetles have been working well all week. Supposed to be a bit warmer this week, so hoppers should still be good until we get a hard frost. Blue wing olives, adams, caddis, griffiths gnats and lt. cahills have been good drys, the past few weeks. Nymphs we are using are pheasant tail nymphs, gold ribbed hares ears, copper johns, zebra midges, burlaps and brassies are all working well. Small #14 baby buggers are working well, olive, black, brown and ginger have all been good colors. Still using small marabou jigs and micro jigs under a small indicator, I'll set the jig at about 18" right now in most areas of the river. The white thread jigs and the small cream colored grubs work well under an indicator just like the micro jig. If your going to use a spinning rod, then a 1/32 or a 1/64 marabou jig works very well, olive, black/yellow, brown, white and white/gray have all been good colors the past few weeks. Small spinners are good the first 30 minutes or so in the morning if you start out at the whistle(7:30 a.m. right now) fishing ends at 6:30 p.m. right now, and all fishing ends on october 31st, and C&R season will start on Nov. 9th this year.

Great weather all week, and the hoppers, beetles ants, and crickets are still working very well, and should continue to work well until the weather cools down, but with 80 degree weather called for for the rest of the week, it should continue to be good terrestrial fishing. I've been catching a lot of trout on Grizzly/green cracklebacks, adams, and para adams, elk hair caddis, blue wing olives, and small griffiths gnats. I'm using 9' 7X leaders and when you add extra tippet, I'm adding about 3' it just gets me a better drift when fishing dry flies. I'll use 9' 6X leaders when fishing woolybuggers, and larger streamers, I use 6X fluorocarbon when fishing small nymphs, I just add about 3 feet of tippet to the end of my standard mono leaders. I've been using a olive woolybugger a lot in the mornings, #14's have been working very well for me. Chamois worms, small egg patterns, and san juan worms will work all day long every day right now, the water is perfect for sight fishing right now. Micro jigs, marabou jigs and woolybugger jigs in white, tan, brown, black, and black/yellow have all been good colors. Glo-balls in orange, white, oregon cheese/red dot, chartreuse and pink have all been good colors. If you are going to use a spinner, then black, brown, or olive have been working well. Plastic worms in orange, white, cheese yellow, pink and flo. green have all been good. Power bait eggs use, white, flo. yellow, hatch brown, pink, and chartreuse have all been good colors. In zone 3 power bait paste, in yellow or red/white/blue or pink have been good. Still catching a lot of trout on night crawlers and corn, good luck this week. Tim Homesley Tim's Fly Shop

Fishing was very good all week, still catching a lot of trout on beetles, ants, hoppers and cracklebacks, also if you like dry fly fishing then you should also be fishing blue wing olives, caddis and adams in sizes 16 and smaller. I fished this afternoon, caught about 15 most on a olive grizzly crackle back but a few were on a #20 adams parachute. I fished 7X tippet and my 1wt it was a good afternoon of fishing the fish were very active, fishing was very good for most of the people I talked to this weekend, a few were having issues, but after seeing they were using 6 and 8 lb line and after we change that line to a 3lb line they did much better. We are still catching a lot of trout on zebra midges, pheasant tails, burlaps, sow bugs and copper johns, small egg patterns have been good producers the past few weeks, orange or pink has been the best colors. Small thread jigs fished a 24" to 36" have been working well, white, and brown have been good colors, and the ole john deere green has been working very well this week. Olive, black, and brown buggers have been good all week. If you are fishing spinners, then black, white and brown have all been good in the mornings. Plastic worms are always a good bet, orange, orange/white, cheese yellow and john deere green have been the top producers this week. If you are fishing eggs, white, and brown are good most of the time, but on the overcast days the flo. yellow and the chartreuse work very well. In zone 3 night crawlers, corn, power bait pastes and live minnows will be your best bet, remember the river is still very low and just a bit off color right now, but it will clear very quickly this week, unless it rains a lot more, good luck on the river this week and use 2lb line it will give the best results right now.

.. River is still in decent shape, the spring is still putting out 6.5 million gallons per day, I talked to the hatchery just the other day, and even with the low water condtions, the water is still flowing from the spring at a good clip, the lowest the spring has been is 3 million gallons per day, so I guess even though it is low, it is still decent. Great fishing this weekend, crowds were down because of the weather, but it turned out really good for the people that braved the rains on saturday, great fishing light rains on saturday and the river is still in great shape, the 1 1/8th" of rain we recieved didn't effect the river at all, but it cooled things down and the dry fly fishing was good. We are still catching trout on dries, adams, blue wing olives, caddis, beetles, ants, hoppers and crickets have all been good, the dry fly fishing will probably only get better in sept. Nymphs will catch fish all day long if you don't want to fish dries, pheasant tails, zebra midges burlaps, copper johns, brassies, sow bugs and hares ears are all working well, we are fishing nymphs #16's and smaller, woolybuggers are still very effective, olive, black, brown and tan have been good colors all week. If you are fishing glo-balls, orange/red dot has been good, the white thread jig is still catching a lot of trout, and the john deere green jig is working very well right now. Plastic worms are very good in zone 1 and zone 3 the orange/white, orange, cheese yellow white, john deere green, pink and pink/white have all been good colors. Plastic eggs in orange, white, chartreuse, flo. yellow, and hatch brown have all been very good all week. Micro jigs in olive, white, and tan have been good, and regular jigs are still very good in olive, black, white, tan, gray and black/yellow. First thing in the morning, spinners in black, skunk, white, and brown have been working well. Water is still very low and very clear, so use 2lb line and only use heavier if you have to. In zone 3, night crawlers and corn is still very good, but any of the power bait products will catch fish down in zone 3 on most days. Good luck on the river this week.

When Fishing/hiking, Do You Carry A Handgun?
timsfly replied to rfd515's topic in General Angling Discussion
I always carry a pistol, mainly because of all the meth heads around, I've carried since I was 14, I don't carry in the state parks, to much temptation to use it But on the creek or in the kayak I always have a pistol, usually it is my .22 S&W ultra light, sometimes I carry my .22 mag. -

Roaring River To Hold Kids' Fishing Day
timsfly replied to Phil Lilley's topic in Roaring River State Park
Going to be a lot of prizes given away at 5:00 p.m. on the 18th of aug. Going to be hot dogs and soda also till all is gone. Going to be a lot of classes on cleaning fish to catching fish. Bring the kids down, under 16 fish for free, over 16, you can help and enjoy the art of volenteer work. MAKO will be there tying flies, so come down and at least give them a hard time if nothing else More help is always needed, baiting hooks tying hooks on, putting line on reels and just helping the kids catch fish, if you can help call the hatchery at Roaring River 417-847-2430 -
Roaring River To Hold Kids' Fishing Day
timsfly replied to Phil Lilley's topic in Roaring River State Park
How about aug 18th Fishing starts at 7 and goes untill 8 Pm The above was for the spring kids day, it should be a great day on sat aug 18th, kids day is always a good time. -
Talked to the hatchery today, spring is running 6.5 million gallons a day, average is 22 million a day of course it always varies with the seasons, the hatchery employee I talked to said we were going to be ok. Lowest recorded flows were around 3 million a day. I fished a couple of hours this afternoon caught several on small Adams, also caught some on a #20 egg pattern and a couple on a beetle and 1 on a crackle back, 9' leader 7X tippet.

River has not dried up YET !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great Dry Fly Fishing Water is still low and clear, but the fishing is still pretty good, I went down sunday afternoon and landed 14 nice rainbows in about 2 hrs on beetles, ants, and a #20 adams, caught two of the 14 on a small white chamois fly. Saw a lot of nice fish in the river, several 2lb rainbows were caught this last weekend and a 10lb rainbow came out on wednesday. I fished up near the old CCC lodge, the water is very good for dry fly fishing on that end of the river, great hopper and beetle fishing down in zone 2 under the trees, any time a breeze came thru you could see the trout taking a few flies off the surface, I think there were little red ants being blow into the water out of the brush along side the river. The hopper dropper system has been working very well for a lot of anglers, a #10 or a #8 hopper with 15" of 7X tippet tied to the bend of the hopper hook, with a small pheasant tail, zebra midge, burlap or a small copper john works very well right now. Small egg patterns and small woolybuggers are still catching a lot of trout, a #20 egg will catch fish most of the day, under a float or sight fishing both methods work well right now. A lot of people are fishing the micro jigs under floats right now and are catching a lot of trout on the olive, white, tan, and the black/yellow are doing best right now. Plastic worms in john Deere green, catalpa worm green, white, orange/white, cheese yellow, and yellow/orange have all been good colors, this week. Eggs are always working, white, flo. yellow, hatch brown, and pink have all been good this week. Spinners are always good early in the morning, brown, white, and black have been the best colors this week. If you are fishing in zone 3 then paste power bait, corn, minnows, and night crawlers, or red wigglers will work most times, good luck on the river this week.

Roaring river is still low and clear, but the flow remains constant, the trout are fine down here the water is still cold and refreshing and the trout are taking dry flys and nymphs as usual. The river is clear and the use of 2lb line is very important, if you have to go to 3 pound, but 4lb is not recommend right now. I fished an hour last night and caught 12 nice rainbows, the smallest was 3" and the biggest was a nice chunky 13" rainbow, caught them on a #20 adams, 8X tippet and a 1wt bamboo built by a local builder. I fished a 12' leader last night, but a 9' will get you by just fine, I wouldn't go shorter than 9' if you do it will probably cost you a few fish, longer leaders are better when the water is this clear. Beetles, ants, hoppers, crickets, caterpillars and crackle backs will work most of the day, early in the mornings, small adams, griffiths gnats, and midges are working well, around 10 we will start using caddis, and blue wing olives. The hotter it gets the better the hoppers, beetles, ants and crickets produce. lots of other flies will work, stimulators, royal wulffs, big humpies, and big renegades, work well also. If you want to fish nymphs, smaller is better right now, copper johns, burlaps, pheasant tails, zebra midges, about any small #16 or smaller nymph will work well. Small jigs and glo-balls fished under a indicator will catch fish most everyday, fish these less than 2' under the indicator most of the time, same as the small nymphs, 18"-24" most days this will work well. Marabou jigs and micro jigs will work great most days, small 1/32 and smaller work best right now, olive white, black, brown, and tan works best right now. Roostertails in brown, black, olive and white have been working well. Plastic worms in orange, cheese yellow, white, john deere green and orange/white have been good colors. Plastic eggs, white, orange, flo. yellow, and hatch brown have all been good. If you are fishing in zone 3 then corn, night crawlers, red wigglers, or any of the power bait paste is a good choice, good luck on the river this week. Going to over 100 everyday this week, Roaring River is a nice cool 57-58 year round, come down and enjoy. Tim Homesley Tim's Fly Shop 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville,MO

Even with the rains the creek has hardly moved at all, there is some water in town, it disappears right above town, there is water way up above town the trout are fine, but we need some rain in the worse way. Walked the lower section the other morning, caught 3 trout all on a caddis, water is ok, just low.

Crane is very, very low, it is completely underground for a long ways above the city crane.

We received a nice 1" rain on saturday, didn't do much, the river came up and then dropped almost as quickly, it murked up and the fishing was great all evening, the beetles and ants were everywhere, the rain must have washed thousands into the river, lots of fish were being caught on that nasty MK leech patten and woolybuggers, and there were blue wing olives, everywhere last evening and lots of midge activity, and still plenty of caddis around, the nymph fishing was good also, copper johns, flash back pheasant tails, small zebra midges and burlaps were all working last night, with the murky water 6X tippet was fine fishing anything under the surface, still using 7X when fishing dries. Been really good beetle, hopper, and ant fishing this year, you can really do well on these in the heat of the afternoon, tricos are still around, but haven't been hatching real heavy the past few weeks, small egg patterns and chaomis or san juan worms are working very well everyday, if you are a sight fisherman, then the water is perfect for your kind of fishing. Small jigs under corks are doing well, for the fly fisherman or the spin fisherman, jig fishing in general has been very good, the 1/100th-1/32 are the sizes we are using the most. Zone 3 is very shallow right now, but there are still a few deeper holes, and if you don't mind ticks, chiggers, snakes and man eating tree frogs, they are the worst right now But if you are fishing in zone 3, use power bait and night crawlers are good right now, hard to beat good ole canned corn. Good luck on the river.
