  1. Has anyone been fishing Montauk since opening day or has the fishing been so good nobody wants to draw attnetion to the park so the could keep it to themselves.
  2. So on friday I was bleesed with a day off from my wonderful retail job and with a 70 degree day in the forecast I had to hit the river. I met fellow OA member Kyle at the McD's in Cuba and after a brief introduction we where off to Cardiac, after a short twenty minute drive we arrived at the parking lot at cardiac hil. After talking a little bit more with Kyle we where off to start our death march up stream, I have fished cardiac several times last year in fell in love with this section of the Meramec but this wa Kyles first time so I warned him up front that I fish it fast and hard and also asked if he was prepared for a nature hike after about an hour and half hike up the river we finally made it to the end of the park and within five minutes Kyle hooked into a rainbow running a dropper rig that consisted of a black woolly bugger and a I believe a worm colored San Juan worm but once the fished lounch himself out of the water it was off. I switched over to a tungsten beadhead black woolly bugger and almost instantly hooked into a park excapee that faught like crazy but I managed to land him. I then noticed that just around the bend there where trout sipping off the surface so I switched over to a #20 elk hair caddis and no take I then switched to a #22 rusty dun and still nothing and then they switched off so we started our hike back down stream Kyle and myself worked the log jams along the bank Kyle useing the worm colored San Juan and I was using a dark green scud we hooked into a few but didn't land any. We worked the stream hard from top to bottom and could find any takers along the way which made the day a little upsetting but my goal was to make sure Kyle found fish and we did. About a hundred yard up from cabin hole Kyle hooked into a couple really nice rainbows and out of frustation I broke down and asked to barrow a San Juan, once tied on I worked right below him in a deep section of fast moving water I hooked in to a brute of a fish but no sooner did I hook into him but with in a couple of minutes I pulled the hook. We fished the rest of the way down to the riffle section at cardiac and I hooked into I really nice 16-18 inch bow with really nice color. All in all it was a slow day for cardiac, the best fly for the day was the worm colored San Juan followed by the black woolly bugger, but a bad day on the river is better then a good day at work.
  3. Thank you Dockta I almost scrubbed the trip.
  4. Ok I need a little help here I cant remeber how to actually interpit the water guage for stealvill when it comes to fishing Cardiac right now the guage is at 1.92 and its running at 316 is that wadeable conditions or what.
  5. Kyle I will know tomarrow " Thursday" if I am going to be able to make it down. 3wt I really enjoy the canoe hatch, especialy when they are wearing there skimping bikinis I always carry Mardi Gras beads in my hip pack for those special occasions. Patfish you gonna be able to sneek away from work.
  6. Ok somaybe I am a little to critical about the line since I have had problems with them before, I took it out today and casted fora little bit on a lake and didn't have an issue with the tip. So now back to the fight with SA about my GPX I emailed there customer service last week and got an email the saame day saying they were going to forword it on to someone and they were going to get back to me, wellthey never eamiled me back and now its going on a week now so I called them and got this answer from them "send it to us and we will FIX IT or replace it". Now how in the world do you "FIX IT" when the line is cracked and the internal membrane is wet.
  7. I have fished Cardiac a few times and have done very well, for a fly selection I use with great succes with San Juan worms used in a tandem rig with scuds, woolley buggers in white and black, I also have another fly but it doesn't have a name that I use that is like running a vacume through the riffle sections. I really have had better luck down stream from Cardiac in fact the brown in my profile pic was caught down stream after only being there for fifteen minutes. If I am off Friday I will shoot you a message if you wanna join up I would be coming from St Louis. Patfish is also a good source for advice on fishing cardiac.
  8. I could understand that the tip will start to sink after hours of use but this was NEW right out of the box, but the guy at BPS said I was being to critical. HMM we will see where I spend my money from now on
  9. Update So I went out to BPS yesterday to talk to Steve who is the lead assoc in the fly shop I showed mt line to him and he said he doesn't have an answer to why this happened to my line after a year of use but said I was in luck because SA had a factory rep there so he would talk to him about it and see what he has to say. They rep look at the line and said wow I have never seen this happen before after just a years worth of use but then in the same breath he has not seen the GPX line in the twotone color before. He gave me the email address to the rep that handles this area and left it at that. So I said I am willing to eat the sixty bucks for new line I just wouldlike to know why this happened and how can I prevent it and I didn't get an answer. So I purchased SA Mastery Trout and said if I don't likeit its coming back. Well guess what it is going back, it cast awsome in the backyard, its as smooth as silk going through my guides but that about all I can say about that. Later on last night I filled my bathtub aka"the test tank" with water too see how well it floated since it has the welded loop and the so called Dry Tip Technology well the tip sank, so I guess I should have gone with my gut and baught the RIO but I was willing to give SA another shot guess I was wrong.
  10. Well I talked to bass pro about the problem and I am supposed to call them tomarrow to see what there answer, I also talked to Chris at T Hargroves here in STL and he said that fly lines has about a 500 hour life span. Now I know I fish a lot but I know I haven't put 500 hours on this line I think I am at 498 hours , come on who keeps track of how many hours they spend on the stream. I took the issue a step further and emailed SA to hear what they have to say but I will see. If I have to break down and buy new line I am moving toward the Rio Gold but does it come in a willow color or do they have a dark tip that transitions into a brighter color.
  11. My future inlaws in myself took a trip to Cancun back in sept didn't do any fishing since it was a family tripand not a fishing trip. There is a charter company there called Aqua World that had several differant charters available and they are a short taxi ride or bus ride within the hotel zone. The bay SIO3 is talking about I believe is the same one they do "jungle tours" in was right across the street from our hotel it looked very fishing and we saw some tarpon along the mangrove island infact I have pics of them cruising through. On a side note we didn't see anything out of the ordinary in the hotel zone but once you get out of the hotel zone your on your own. Let me know if you want more info
  12. DT put it best early in the season they will take just about anything that comes there way not much of a challenge. I use woolybuggers in white do very well for me, #16-18 olive colored scuds have worked for me in the riffles sections, and SAN JUAN worms are killer.
  13. Ok so here is the deal I was out fishing today at Suson trying to beat out the cheeseheads but thats another story. I noticed my line which is only a year old and taken care of better then my car wasn't casting very well, so upon further inspection I noticed it was cracked so in anger I reeled in and called it a day heartbroken because my line is jacked up. So my quastion is what line should I choose should I stay with the SA GPX Mastery Serius or is there a compairable line for a better price.
  14. Well the futures misses just informed me if I wanted to go I could anyone in the Stl area wanna car pool,I have never been down for opening day but I wouldlike to view the mayhem
  15. This is a very rough draft of somthing that has been on my mind for a long time. Le me know what you think. TroutBum A View Inside the Mind of a Fellow Flyfisherman For many years I have been asked “why to you take your fishing to the extreme”, and my answer is always the same “because its fun”, but deep down inside you know there is more to it then “its just fun”. There are days when I wish I never tied a size 20 elk hair caddis fly onto the end of my line, further more I wish I never had the bright idea to try my luck at fly fishing but I did and I loved it. While most people would rather spend there days sitting on the couch watching the next greatest hit on t.v. or better yet go to the big brick and morter buidings we call malls and spend an entire day tring to impress ourselves with the latest and greatest fashion. But for a very select group of people we know there is some place we would rather be for we are Trout bums a self appointed title that we gave ourselves hell there has even been movies made about us, but I myself would rather live the adventure then just sit back and watch someone show me how its done. But how do we know if we have crossed into the next level, or why deep down inside we feel the river is always calling us back for another round, or for that matter how do we explain why we fish the way we do, last time I checked we still put are waders on the same way well I hope I can shed some light on the subject as we take this journey together. Now I am not going to sit here and write this with the intensions that I know more then you or I am better then you, but I am going to give you a glimpse into the mind of someone that feels so deeply about chasing an creature with a brain the size of a peanut but has frustrated one of the most intelligent creatures for thousands of years.
  16. It said I was 54 and I am only 26 Darn I should have cheated.
  17. I would second the bald eagles at the park being pretty cool. If you get there when they open the gates they tend to congregrate right there at the field. I have seen MDC take a bucket of dead fish out to the field and the eagles just sworm in on it.
  18. I like to use Sanjuan worms, salt and pepper colored scuds, and anything that is small. When are you guys planning on heading down there I too was also thinking about heading down to fish cardiac.
  19. Ok so now I am really confused with this this thread. But I will try to head down to Montauk next week just so this thread can get a fishing report
  20. Has anyone ever fished cardiac at night. I am planning on fish cardiac in a couple of weeks with a new challenge at night. What should I take with ie lighting, and so forth and so on. Any help would be good.
  21. Alright you wanted the story here it is. On Sunday Nov 30 me and my brother headed down to Meremec Spring Park to take part in the C&R trout season. We started up by the wire and work the area hard I sarted with scuds and the I switched over to a San Jaun worm but after about 2 hours and no fish we decided to start working are way down stream in the park. We must have stoped and cast to every fish we saw along the way had several chase my flies but I couldn't get them to take the bait " that was just a figure of speach" I really wasn't using bait. We worked are way downstream to the bridge and decide we would turn around and start back up at the wire and make another pass before calling it quites. At around noon my brother decided he had enough and called it quites. I fished for another 20 minutes and had 2 trout take a rainbow colored scuds but I guess I didn't set the hook. So now I am faced with a delima do a stay here and fish the part or do I go against what everyone said and head for cardiac. I went back up to the car to find out what my brother wanted to do since this was only his second time trout fishing and I really think he likes going giggiing better then this. So I asked if he wanted to try cardiac out, he was a little hesitent because I have told him how easy it was going down the hill but the trip back up is a B***H "fill in the blanks." He agreed that he would give it a try and with that we were off. I cut through St James because it looked faster but I must have missed the turn and found myself hearing banjo music up in the hills some where. I finally found some locals that informed me that I was actually by dryfork and not cardiac so after getting directions to cardiac again we where off. Once we arrived at cardiac I again warned him the we had on easy walk down the hill but we were going to have to come back up it and he said lets do it. We got down to the stream around 1:30 and we started heading down stream. Now I know none of you guys have fished with me before but when I fish cardiac I fish it on the fly I don't really stop a whole lot I try to fish it fast and hard. After about 10 mins in the stream I was drifting a fly about 3 feet under my indicator and with a slight twich of the indicator the fight was on, I was happy because now my day is going to be complete I finally caught a trout. After a short fight with this rainbow I landed him and released him. I told my brother we only were going to fish about 15 to 20minutes and then call it quites so we headed down stream a little farther to a spot that I have hooked into several fish before but never landed them after fishing this little spot for a few minutes I said to my brother I amgoing to make a couple more drifts through this hole and we would call it quites. That when It happen on my final drift my indicator completely summerged and I thought I snagged the bottom so I lifted my rod tip to free my self and that when I noticed that it was moving. I relised that this was somthing big it felt like I was dragging a brick acrossed the bottom but this brick was fighting back. I have never seen my rod bend this way before I knew it was somthing big I faught this fish for like ten minutes before I even was able to get a glimpse at what it was. The first thing I saw was its tail and when I saw it I new it was somthing special after about fifteen minutes of fight this fish I told my brother it was time to net him. And that is my story I WILL NOT give the name of the fly I was using but I will say this there are two other members to this site that know my goto fly. I will tell you what color it was BLK & WHT. And all I will say about the location is it was down stream from the put in at cardiac. I am including more pics from this magical day including a bending rod pic and the pic of the fish again. Tight lines to everyone. P.S. If anyone would like to know where this spot is you should come fishing with me. Here are the links to the pics the first is a rod bend pic http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g294/bra...11-30-08001.jpg The second is the fish in the net http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g294/bra...11-30-08002.jpg The third is me almost loosing the brown back to the stream http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g294/bra...11-30-08004.jpg And the final is the MONEY SHOT http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g294/bra...11-30-08005.jpg
  22. I promise once I get out of school tonight I will give everyone the story. Thanks for the comments everyone it has taken me 5 years to get a trout that nice. I will tell you this, the trout in the picture was Released unharmed.
  23. Sorry I made everyone wait but I add the photo
  24. Is the suspense killing you well here is the pic. I couldn't figure out how to add my photo here so I added it to photobucket. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g294/bra...11-30-08005.jpg I know its not very big but it still was the biggest brown I have ever caught
