  1. The size of the rod is dependant on fish size. You arent gonna throw an 8wt on a small mountain stream for 8 in brookies. Hell even a 5wt is too big for that. IMO a 3wt is way too small for fishing taney. On one of the smaller streams however, a 3wt would be perfect or a 2 wt or a 1 wt or a 00 wt. Using a 1 wt for stripers would just snap your rod in half. with the average size of fish in taney i would suggest a 9ft 5 wt. yeah maybe if you played the fish till it was dead
  2. sign me up
  3. Is anyone planning on coming up to the reatail show in denver in 2 weeks??? if so let me know cause ill be up there (i posted this on john wilsons site also)
  4. you could always use a .22 with short cart. about as loud as a pellet gun!!!!
  5. Wait one minute!!! Whats this? It cant be! You mean....! Salmo trutta is the only species of trout native to the United Kingdom, where we also have one native species of grayling (Thymalus thymalus). If my memory serves me right, Salmo trutta is the one and only BROWN TROUT!!!! OH MY GOSH!!! Brown trout are also NATIVE to the UK and EUROPE environment-agency.gov.uk/commondata/.../onftroutgrayling_766460.pdf Its amazing what one search on UK Native fish can show you
  6. nevermind....i was refering to the post that gonefishin asked if they were native to EUROPE not just the UK. I never said anything about them (rainbows and browns) being native to missouri....but whatever...what do i know...im just a kid with a fisheries bio degree!
  7. Brown trout are native to europe!! Where do you think the name German brown came from? The UK also has Sea run browns, much like the ones in argentina ; only not as large as their southern cousins!!
  8. I miss those midwestern storms...the ones out here suck, and weve been getting them everyday for like the last 2 months.
  9. They didnt have that in mind when they started to stock them. The old timers wanted food.... and i dont think that they were as conservation minded as we are today.
  10. Let me tell you that you dont have to get on your knees to fish the juan.... there are more people that fish from texas hole up on any given day, the the whole weekend combined on taney. those fish are not shy by any means. I agree with john on the temps. even in september you will feel a heat with a vengance. and be prepared for people and more people and more people. we have better quality fish back home on the white river chain that the juan could ever dream of having.
  11. the pond thing would be pretty cool, but for one, it costs a lot of money to make a pond, not all soils can hold the water effectively. You can seal a pond with bentonite but if you live in the wrong spot, you can pretty much plan on spending hundreds of thousdands of dollars!
  12. Well for those of you that drive diesel trucks, get the conversion to bio deisel, which is pretty much corn oil. and the majority of the hybrids that have come out have the same power as the plain ole hoopty that you drive now. and can pull a bass boat down the highway at 80mph. as for global warming, (another time i can actually use my degree for) this stuff has been going on for millions of years. the earth is just going through her cycle. the same cycle that she has been on for however many years she has been around. Think of it like a human woman...only instead of weeks its hundreds of years...this is just the menstrual cycle of the earth. with the hot flashes!!!!lmao
  13. Here's a little something that i have summed up from reading about cleaning your boots and its what i personally use. If you happen to come out west or even back home to help stop the spread of diddymo, the NZ mud snail, and even whirling diesease, please dont use bleach as it does not kill the spores or larvae of the snails. Use a 50/50 solution of 409 and water and let them soak for an hour or even overnight.and/or freeze them. BLEACH DOESN'T WORK
  14. if you are gonna get waders, you are gonna get what you pay for, buy cheap waders and you will most likely be dissatisfied. Yeah you are gonna have to fork out a little extra cash, but buying one pair of top of the line waders and having them last a long time with the lifetime warranty, is better than paying $100 bucks once a year for crap. Then take in the aspect of how much time you are gonna spend on the water. Not to upset any of the guys on here, but how many days do you average on the river a year. This year i have 100 days on the water already. when it comes down to it, you have to get what YOU want. Listen especially to those who put their time on the water, who know quality and what is gonna last. Im not doggin the cheaper waders, but whatever.
  15. The orvis school provides everything for you. you dont have to do anything but show up. im not sure about the time ratios, or how effective the schools are, but they teach you everything youd need to know pretty much out of the book.
  16. if you still want a "stamp".....you could always move to pennsylvania or new york. they still issue them. my brother went back last summer and it was still a stamp.
  17. Do i neet to repost the picture?
  18. Its the same hatchery that has always been there. They made the holding pond on the opposite side of the road to hold browns. and outlet 3 is going to have a fish ladder installed for the browns. somoeone else can help me out on this also....
  19. gut them and gill them right after you catch them...and pretty much cook them as soon as you can. fire up the grill. leave everything on them...ie. skin heads fins everything. lay em on the grill until you can grab the lower jaw and head and it starts to pull out of the skin....then flip them over and when the lower jaw falls off or the head falls off they are ready to be eaten. take them off the grill and pull the skin off....if you did it right, it should come off in a solid piece. you can them pull the head and back bone out with all the bones. also, pull the fins out and that will take care of the rest. good hot trout that doesnt taste fishy. as for seasonings go, lowery's season salt is a good choice and/or lemon pepper and butter.
  20. Glad to see you guys are getting a much needed rain. we just got done with our monsoons out here...the ants werent as heavy this year on the juan, but the baetis more than made up for it. as for the animas, it was a trickle at 400cfs, and in less than a day jumped to over 1000 cfs and stayed that way. today it is perfect for fishing and last night the fishing was amazing.
  21. yeah it was....but its not uncommon to catch or even strictly fish up there for trout.
  22. hey michael....ask rodney about salad shooter...im sure you know who he is
  23. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06187/703720-113.stm
  24. the dead chicken is the same fly as salad shooter's big ugly...the same big ugly that is forsale in stan and carylon's shop
  25. i agree. any damage to the gills, no matter how severe, can cause serious injury and eventual death to a fish. now you tell me....when you catch a fish that size, and you want to take a picture you know that it takes more than 30 seconds to get the picture. and the fact that they weighed the fish would also take more than 30 seconds to get that fish calmed down enough to even have it on that scale trying wiggling aroudn trying to get off of the hook.....released unharmed could have been belly up watching it float away....but whatever not my problem to worry about resident grouch
