Flyfishn, No offense taken. Am used to that by now. By now Ive heard it all from "he's gay" to "Nascar is rigging races for him". IMO that could be the real reason for the decline of Nascar, Fans booing, throwing cans and bottles on the track, harassing certain drivers fans. I personally witnessed these this weekend except for throwing stuff on the track because the race was rained out. Probably will race tommorow since I had to come back for work. Back on topic, None of these booing, harassing fans were Hendrick fans. Its one thing to root hard for your driver, another thing to get nasty towards another driver. I know it is a select few fans that set a bad example. I am a fan of alot of drivers but have grown pretty intolerant of other drivers fans. Gordon and Hendrick nation will go on no matter what, they have for years. I will continue to root for Hendrick and Gordon despite the booing, harassment, etc. Im sure every other drivers fan will root for their driver. Thats what I think makes Nascar, very loyal fans. I agree that Nascar has lost something in the past years but they still fill the stands. Maybe I'll get lucky and the Tues race will rain out and get to go to the makeup race in Nov.. Weather.com looks like they will be able to get it in on Tues. tho. Oh well there is always next year. HFDHOOSIER

Im going to Michigan to watch the Nextel boys mix it up this weekend. I hope it is a good race. Never have been to a Cup race before. I was a fireman in the pits for 3 Busch races and 2 Craftsman truck races at Gateway. Last year I was in the stands for the Busch race. Its a 8 hour drive to Michigan, but a friend of mine got free tickets, so the price was right. rubbin is racin! Go Hendrich 24,48,25 and soon Dale Jr HFDHOOSIER

I tie them with pearl, red, silver, or blue flashabou wrapped up the hook shank with ginger, furnace, olive or grizzly hackle. I dont add the peacock herl, seem to catch as many fish without it. Im lazy by nature and it cuts out the extra step of adding it. I float them dry and then strip back. Im not a great caster by any means but still seem to do well with cracklebacks. They are a great fly to go to. Too many variations to carry them all but everyone finds a variation that works for them. HFDHOOSIER

I cant make it those dates, going to Michigan for the Nextel Cup race. I was there on 8/7 and 8/8 and had the best luck on black zebra midge, cracklebacks and deer hair cddis. Good luck to you, looking forward to your report. The water sure felt good in this heat. Had good luck on glo balls also but had to keep switching colors often. HFDHOOSIER I just saw on Reeds site, kids free fishing day is the 18th.

HEADING TO MONTAUK (8/7, 8/8) TUES&WED
hfdhoosier replied to hfdhoosier's topic in Montauk State Park
Fishing was great. Caught alot of fish. black zebra midge, Olive deer hair caddis, cracklebacks, light orange glo-balls were the ticket. Went to Tan Vat on Wed. mid day and got a few short strikes on deer hair caddis but did not hook up with any fish. The park was great tho, lots of fish in the stream. Somebody said thet there is a kids tournament this coming weekend. They probably are loading the river up for that. Caught two 4 inch rainbows behind the mill that had parr marks on them. I wonder if these were born in the stream. I did not see anyone poaching as jdmidwest did. Wasn't really watching tho, fortunately I was busy releasing fish. i have saw alot of poaching/cheating in the past tho. Weather was really hot, but was able to find some shade and the water was refreshing. I staid in a tent and it really cooled off at night, with the box fan I had blowing in my tent. Slept very comfortably. Great trip, am ready to go back again. Im addicted! If anyone is going, let me know, I need another fix. HFDHOOSIER -
I am heading out Tues morning for Montauk to sling some flies. Heading back on Wed evening, anyone gonna be there during that time? Any recent reports? Will probably fish the park and Current around Tan Vat. You know you wanna go! HFDHOOSIER

3wt, I think that is a great idea about posting flies that work at Montauk. Some of them are already in the fly tying forum with step by step tying directions. I just float the zebra midges under a strike indicator, I add weight in faster water but in slower water the beadhead provides enough weight. I vary the depth, usually the same depth as the fish, I usually get more strikes close to the bottom. The shaded stretch between Hudsons corner and the huge rock up from the dam is a good spot for the midges. I generally fish: Copper johns: copper, green, red, chartreuse, white Zebra midge: red.black White thread jig Beadhead Pheasant tail nymph Mohair leech: olive, brown, black Cracklebacks: olive, ginger, furnace I wrap pearl, gold, or red tinsel up the hook shank and then wrap hackle forward and tie off, I do not use peacock herl as a dorsal rib. Elk hair caddis: I use deer hair since I have deer hair from hunting Adams dry fly Mosquito dry fly Glo ball egg patterns: on a lead jig head hook, mcflyfoam in approx 15 colors These usually will do the trick. I am still learning alot about trout fishing and look forward to all input you guys offer. Hope this helps some of you guys out. Most ofthese flies were introduced to me by kind flyfishers on the river at Montauk. Thats what I love about flyfishing, most of the people are willing to share their secrets and most of the time will even give you a fly or two to try out. I always try to return the favor by sharing it with someone else. Good fishing till then. HFDHOOSIER

Thanks for the report. I hope to get to Montauk again soon. Sometimes the fishing can be a bit tough. Cracklebacks are a great fly, an older gentleman gave one to my wife years back while she was fishing at Montauk. She tied it on and she started catching fish left and right. I then had to learn how to tie them. I usually have good luck with zebra midge (red body with copper wire, and black body with copper wire)sizes 18 and 20. The last time I was there I had the same problem with the fish just bumping my fly. The small zebra midge solved that problem. I need to get back there I am getting the itch. Keep the good reports coming. HFDHOOSIER

Sounds like they need to deputize some of us fishermen to get the problem under control. Seems they are never in the spots where this is going on but one of us on this forum is. I hope you still had a good time. Im sure you would have caught more fish if not for all the partiers. I guess its hard to find a good balance on a river that is dual purpose (fishing and floating). Has anyone made reservations at the park yet? Im getting ready to make reservations and wondered what loop people were planning to stay at. I have not ever been to Bennett and was wondering if anyone had preferences on campsites. HFDHOOSIER

Fished the park on Monday and Tuesday. fishing was good, lots of fish in the stream. Caught fish on zebra midges( both red and black), red copper johns, cracklebacks(dry and stripped), deer hair caddis, egg patterns. The biggest was a 17 inch bow (picture attatched) that weighed 2.5 lbs. Weather was awesome, cool at night and in the mornings. The river was clear so use 2lb mono or lightweight fluorocarbon. I could tell the difference in number of bites between 2 and 3 lb mono. Alot more takes on the 2 lb mono. Hope this helps anyone heading down in the near future. HFDHOOSIER sorry about the double post but I lost internet connection in the middle of posting and it posted twice. HFDHOOSIER

I always wondered if they reproduced also. Some where I heard they do reproduce but not very effeciently, ie conditions have to be just right. I never have fished the current by Baptist but have fished alot just below Tan Vat. Am starting to do pretty well there. At first I did not. Caught rainbows and browns, no big size but the biggest bow at 16in and brown at 15in. Mainly on olive hackle wet flies and orange egg flies. I am starting to learn more ways to fish different styles of water and I think that has helped me outside the park. Would love to fish with others from this forum because it seems I always pick up new techniques or "tricks" when fishing with someone new. I hope I can be helpful in some way to them too . I might be heading to montauk this Mon,Tues if anyone would like to join me. HFDHOOSIER

Good post, seems like you fish Montauk alot. Its my park of choice, the weeds in the stream prompted me to have to change my fishing style but that is good thing. Always learn something new everytime I go trout fishing. Maybe someday we can fish together. I am still learning alot about flyfishing and enjoy learning new things. Keep up the good posts, its the good reports that make me want to go fishing. HFDHOOSIER

I am goihg to try to go Tues-Thurs. I plan on pulling my pop-up camper. I will probably have a bed or two open in the the camper if anyone needs a spot. It has cool AC too if the weather is hot . I still have a lot to learn about fly fishing, and will gladly trade some cool AC for a tip or two . I will probably reserve a site next week. Cant wait to meet ya all. HFDHOOSIER

I will be there on the 19th! Looking forward to meeting you guys. Seems like I already know you from reading all your great posts. Is everyone just going to Bennett for the day or longer? I will probably make it for 2-3 days. Anyone camping at Bennett? Is it Sept. 19th yet, I cant wait that long HFDHOOSIER

yeah, the fly area is really grown up. Alot of my favorite holes were unfishable and others were hard to get a good drift because of the weeds. I fished Tan Vat and had to clean off my fly every other cast. Frustating but still a good time fishing. HFDHOOSIER

can't make it this time, just got back Sun. from there and have to catch up on work around the house. Good luck tho. Tell us how you did when you get back. We can at least then live through your eyes. Fish on! HFDHOOSIER

Heading down Sat.(jun30)and Sun.(july1), anybody else going.
hfdhoosier replied to hfdhoosier's topic in Montauk State Park
Randall, The river was very fishable, normal level, I thought it might raise after the rains Sat. and Sun. but it didn't. Fishing was good on egg patterns, streaky on all other patterns. Caught fish in the park on #10 olive crackleback stripped upstream, white thread jig, olive wooly, copper johns, zebra midge, caddis dry. Outside the park, light orange glow ball and olive crackleback stripped upstream. Here is a pic of a little bow outside the park. I will also post a pic of the stream in Photographs forum. Check it out, cool desktop wallpaper. Staid at Reeds Cabin, wonderful accomodations. It rained both days but never hard enough during the day to keep the wife and I from fishing. Had the stream pretty much to ourselves both days. HFDHOOSIER -

I was able to fish with my family and daughters friend at Montauk for 4 days. I fished both the park and trophy waters by Tan Vat access. In the park the fish were biting on zebra midges, pheasant tail nymphs, orange egg patterns, red copper johns. In the trophy area, good bites on olive buggers, anything with olive hackle stripped upstream, orange egg patterns. another guy was having luck on a chamois worm fly. Here is a pic of my daughter on the left and her friend with their catch in the park. It was my daughters friends first time ever with a fly rod, first time trout fishing and her first 2 trout. Fishing was great, stream up a little but fished well. Hated to leave to come home. HFDHOOSIER
