  1. No problem buddy, just a thought here now mind ya...in a painting of this nature most works there is a focal point ( so I was taught ) which would in this piece be the eye... 'The Eye of the Brown'...thus a title can be born ?? just my deranged thought process, lol Any photograph is suppose to be harder to draw / paint from than the real thing...kind of next to impossible with a fish!! back in the day the human figure was suppose to be the hardest subject to draw...in college the drawing classes I was in had live (paid well probably) nude models both male and female. the heavier models were much easier to draw as opposed to the slim ones... due to muscles, ribs, etc. I thought my first few drawing classes were great, lmao...then it started kinda getting old...those were the days, lol. I still use a genuine quill tipped pen and inkwell for my work...no feather on it though...I refuse to use the finest tip marker money can buy...the end result is close to the same to all who would view the piece...but the difference...well...guess I'm just kinda anal that way, lol
  2. One is their own worst critic...least that's the way I am, lol That being said I have drawn numerous fish amoung other pieces in my life. Had the opportunitty to send a portfolio to hallmark cards a few yrs. back...I ask the same of them that you are asking, bad or good I wanted to hear it, just be honest with me, ya know. They gave me an honest critic. They said some of my work was excellent and some had room for improvement, better than I had given myself really. Far as your painting...it's good over all...the painting has hard edges and lacks some depth and the jaw of the fish is not accurate, compare it to the picture the picture that gavin gave. Color is good. Smooth out the edges, put a little more emphasis on shading so it does not appear quite as flat and it would be very good, please understand I'm not saying it is not good, ok. With any artist there is always room for improvement...aint nobody perfect, especially me, lol
  3. GB, I grew up in / on "The Big Piney" neck of the woods,...wish I had a nickel for every rock I've skipped on that river, lol
  4. I'll try to keep it brief, the following is speculation on my part. I do believe smallies and browns can share the same water as long as there is forage, if the water warms in summer the trout will seek the colder water temps, smallies don't mind the warmer water...warmwater / coldwater each will find their habitat. IMO it will have to be over studied before any serious considerations will be given ?? IMO a feasability study, desirable conditions, cost/analysis distance for transport, stocking methods, etc. availability of hatcheries to produce the required numbers the profile of the area in question, access points, acquiring more access points...land ownership, etc. environmental impact and all related concerns I could go on but I'm boring myself, lol IMO the list goes on...just some things possibly to think about.
  5. Missouri Outdoors, host Kip something?...imo a useful propoganda tool to compliment their magazine. If CA's you mention were in a higher profile area they would imo be getting allot more attention. Just please keep your eyes (which apparantly you are) open and you will see the things we speak of my friend. There just could be so much more done.
  6. FW, IMO, there's our tax dollars hard at work to benefit us all, nice aint it? I have friends that have jet boats, yeah there fun to take a ride in and useful for fishing if used properly, key word properly, don't matter who you are. The rules just don't seem to apply to some, ya know.
  7. Common courtesy was a friend of common sense...both deceased for several years now, lol. Upon their death not many attended the funeral because so few realized they were gone. Sorry guys, this old hillbilly glitched for a moment, lol...even the ones that are suppose? to protect and preserve our natural resources are guilty of this imo. If anyone can explain this to me I got all day...I'll be more than glad to listen !
  8. I hear ya jc, It's all in the moment to most. To please a few is relativally easy in most cases...to please all, well...that's the hard one! It is man ourselves that are our own worst enemy. As soon as our 'superoir thought process' creates machines that are both mobile and possess 'the power of reasoning' our time, well...we are cutting our own throats imo. Some may be puppets deemed by whatever their circumstances may be...be we aint stinkin robots yet. Good thoughts jc...I DO NOT like the world for which my grandson will have to edure in his lifetime...I hope it will change which it will...that's the only given constant...but the direction it takes remains yet to be seen.
  9. Very well taken beautiful pictures...good job...I only have one question. Not being as familiar with brooks and cuts as I am browns and rainbows... is the last pic a brook or cut ? Just a question on my part due to ignorance and lack of catching many of either. Thanks...brownieman
  10. No envy at all gavin...sorry if i projected that...just wondered about the word 'wicked' not 'huge fish' and was curious about how the regs. applied it being private. I have only boughten 1 tag for the parks many years ago and I understand to each their own...just was not the experience I was looking for. cheers to you too my friend !
  11. At that rate the return shouldn't take too long...seems high to me but I am not a wealthy man...guess money doesn't matter to thoses who have a ton of it, I'll never know, lol. Not being a smarty gavin but what do you mean by 'wicked' Guess it bothers me to have to pay for fishing period...due to state regs. we already are paying...I know less than most states but still... This being private must one possess a fishing permit / trout stamp or do you know, just curious ?
  12. I don't understand. If this behavior is not to your liking which appears to be the case...why do you visit the site? Cursing on a public forum...well don't care for my grandson reading it but he see's about the same thing on prime time T.V. Myself, I know several intellegent "grown men" as you say that cuss like sailors...most of the time using these type words to place emphasis on something. Has any good advise been given / taken from this "other" site or just a bunch of non-sense?
  13. Just viewed the link to " Westover farms" given by Terrapin Station. Definately some big money being spent there by someone or several in what is in my opinion an endeavor to emulate...for lack of better words..."The way it used to be". IMO these type facilities I fear will be one of the few options my grandson will have as he gets older. Their website is attractive but to me is just a nicely presented sales pitch which is what it is meant to be...I would do the same in the same position. You have to market your product or it is not much of an attempt for success. It is a good honest, expensive attempt to offer the "best of both worlds" and I would say will be highly successful. Some will pay big bucks for this type of recreation. At least it's their choice and their own money they are spending...which imo is not always the case.
  14. Interesting jd and gavin...yes the ONSR has plans to change and give Flying W a make over so to speak from what I have read. The following is from an article I read concerning Flying W... was sent to me by a friend because he knows I have a genuine concern for our states aquatic resources. Reads as follows; "This is a part of our efforts to help make the Ozark National Scenic Riverways a family-friendly place to visit," said Park Superintendent Noel Poe. "Flying W area has been a site for a lot of party activity at the bluff. these proposed changes will help better control deviant behavior there." Within this article they stated they were open for comments and suggestions from the public. IMO this is the facade too often thrown up to make us feel our opinion matters. In my opinion they will analyze, create special task forces, bring in the experts in this field, meet, study and competely over complicate what is in essense a relatively simple matter. So goes our tax dollars. I sent my comments concerning this matter and IMO they were probably filed in the old round file cabinet, lol. jd...concerning the land transfer on the current I have a little knowledge of the land in question. As the article from the Associated Press, which jd gave a link to, before the MDC purchased this trac it was a corporate retreat enjoyed by Alton Club members which consisted of a box company from Illinois. IMO was kind of a playground for the rich and famous within the company. Read that link given by jd from the press and you can tell what the place consisted of. Upon the purchase by the MDC in "the mid-1990s it's been used for a teacher training in conservation and other workshops, but is was generally not open to the public"...so this article states. The end product was the Jerry Presley Center of Learning and Education ??...not sure that is the correct name but will be close if one wants to check. IMO this was something purchased with good intent to better educate teachers and such about environmental issues while at the same time putting a Director / Ex-Director of the MDCs name ( being Jerry Presely) on a sign under such a pretense. I AM NOT downing the intent and purpose of this action...the intent was good. but from the AP article look at the enemities that went along with the total package...what a perfect little set up, ya know. IMO there are several projects the MDC has worked into their budget resulting in huge money pits...primarily due to an influential name or position within the dept. and concerning matters such as these the cost is irrelavent to acheive the desired facility / results. I'm not jumping on any band wagon here, nor is my opinion intended to influence anyone. These are just my opinions...we all are entitled to that and if we differ...well...that's a good thing because that is how it is...we all have the right to dis-agree...but please do so in a constructive manner. Each of you can conclude your own opinions on the information available to you depending on how deep you want to dig...it works for me, don't really know of any other way. I make every effort possible to not speak out of ignorance and beleive me...thats difficult for my simple self, lol brownieman ( CC, you may use bm to abbreviate my name if you like...I thought about that and found it entertaining being a natural function, lol). Sorry to all for the lengthy post...rambling once again...
  15. MAN...this thread took a wrong turn somewhere. Like terry said it's fun to hold fish in different positions to see how they look. I simply asked a question and jeremy gave me an answer and posed a question back...thought it would be interesting to see who was closest...not...de-railed ? Jeremy...was a pretty fish no matter what the size was...don't know what debunked the topic but i would still like to know the actual size...thought it was kinda fun guessing. I'll stick to my 19 1/2 or so if you don't mind sharing...just left me for one curious ??
  16. now c-mon...this is a set up lmao did you mearure and / or weigh her accurately? i'd saaaay...19' inches,a tad better maybe...3 to 3 1/4 lbs...little lighter if anything OK...you got it,, NAIL ME. lol still think it's a trick question ?? when all are done guessing let us know who wins
  17. Sounds like a decent trip in all. Any day on the river is always a plus in my book...glad to hear you caught a good # of smallies. It don't get much better !! IMO if efforts are not made to control the jet boats on the " smaller streams" it can and will have a negative impact of the rivers eco-system. Shoals are like nurseries to everything from aquatic incects to minnows, trout, rough fish, etc. Thankfully some native species prefer slower / deeper water and therefore are not quite as subject to the damage incurred from boat motors ( both prop and jet ), canoes, tubes, foot traffic...just anything that disturbs the shoal itself. If the integrity of the shoals are affected it weakins the most basic link of the chain and the entire strength of the chain will suffer...being the eco-system of the entire stream will reflect such actions. IMO each has their place and there is plenty of water for all to enjoy, although becoming less and less. Understanding the problem is easy...fixing it...well...this old boy can only speculate. IMO it's all stewardship whether it be amoung fisherman, boaters...all who use these waters for their own personal preference of enjoyment and most importantly a stewardship with " Mother Nature". IMO...far as a fix...I don't have the answers, have a few thoughts and suggestions but being neither influential or wealthy...well guys like me just don't get much attention, lol As far as the detramental effects that are occuring by us all ( understanding it can't be helped if you fish ) will prove to be a curse to our fisheries, unless promt action is taken without doing years of 'studies'...well...we will not leave a very comfortable bed for our...guess my grandson for lack of a better term and I can only imagine what will be seen through his eyes.
  18. Thats good gavin..."Dude Ranch"... sure you spelled dude right i.e. "Dud"...all kidding aside got a laugh outta that one.
  19. I understand your point fully and agree. Concerning this particular post I do believe the symbols were not meant in an abrasive or improper manner...CC has a grasp of the english language far above most I have seen. I for one do not think his symbols represented any foul language...guess it's all in the perception of the reader. Just my take on this one.
  20. thanks for the decent reply terry...meant no harm but was afraid my eye would get blacked on that one, lol. marketing strategy it is...have a ton of pics shot from every angle imaginable. my avitar the pack of smokes under the bottom fish is a good reference. you are good my friend...how you got that 32 incher to appear to be a dink...well...I aint figured that one out yet, lmao.
  21. ...do's ?...are you talking dissolved oxygen levels? one more question...why do most fisheman especially the guides extend their arms out while holding the fish to make the fish appear larger than it is...is it marketing strategy or otherwise ?...just curious
  22. [i have to say that even though I've joined the "dark side" with the jetboat, I'm afraid of what will happen in the future. Al, I always ran a prop with a jack and crept up the shoals and drug my boat upstream when it got too shallow. Just curious...with the damage being incured on river shoals from various reasons, what's your opinion ? For a jet to run in 2 to 3 inches of water as they are noted for they have to be planed out from what I have seen. In water up to probably 3 to 4 ft. deep it is apparant they disturb the bottom of the river, you can see clean gravel stripes where they have run them due to the stream of water shot from the lower unit downwards. Do you think this has a negative impact on shoal dwelling aquatic incects, minnow spawns etc. Hellgrammite's (dobson fly larvae) sure you know that... used to be fairly abundant on the shoals, could drape a seine across the shoal and kick aroud a few rocks above it and get a few. They are bar none one of the toughest best baits I have ever used...their numbers are minimal compared to years past from my experience where ever jet boats frequently are used...especially in the warm water streams which tend to be more condusive for them. Just curious your feelings concerning this...I see so few anymore and wonder what has attributed to the decline in numbers.
  23. I agree with that. If a fly rod is desired the only bait I have found (besides the almost non existant helgrimite) that are tough enouph to make a decent cast are leeches. They work excellent if you worm them on the hook, often you can catch multiple fish on one leech if you can stand to put the little blood suckers on, lol.
  24. thats a good one, I've had several fish over the years "give a plug back" so to speak... had a couple of friends that we shared info amoung ourselves...couple of times we got each others plugs back...pretty cool ! IMO often times if the plugs aren't buried good the fish will rake them off on cover...especially if it's restricting them from being able to feed well. used to be an on going topic (given each other s**t ) on who has the right to lay claim to the plug, lol.
