  1. I think this applies to anyone with a loaded gun, concealed or not. I am in favor of being allowed to have a weapon in a national park, but let's be realistic - the chances of needing one to fend off a bear is is highly unlikely, except possibly in Alaska. Most of us who backpack and canoe in wilderness areas consider ourselves lucky if we ever SEE a bear. I support the individual decision to carry one, but I personally would not, considering that I spend lots of money to buy very light gear, and I wouldn't add to my load a 5 lb item that would never be used. As a safety item, a gun would be more useful on Missouri streams, conservation areas, and national forests, but not for protection against bears.
  2. I floated Tan Vat to Cedar Grove last Saturday, and had about the same success as you. The river was up close to a foot, off-color, and still rising. No luck on sculpins, caddis, or most everything else. But it was still a great day - we didn't see a soul between Baptist and Cedar Grove.
  3. I was told that guiding for pay in the trout parks is illegal. Anyone know for sure?
  4. Can't have bacon and eggs without toast in the morning.
  5. You were probably on the private property with a cabin, just upstream from Cardiac. John is a nice guy, but doesn't take kindly to trespassers. He has had a lot of problems with break-ins, thefts, and general disrespect for his property. There is a map in the parking lot that shows the boundaries for the Woodson Woods wildlife area. Anywhere else not in the wildlife area is private property.
  6. Do what Brian says. fyi - fished it a couple weeks ago and caught on stonefly nymphs and Don's Craw. The stonefly imitiations were gargantuan - size 4 hooks, weighted with .030 lead. Use a 6 or 7 weight fly rod with heavy leader; I was using a 3X tippet.
  7. I fished Montauk above the dam on Saturday and there seemed to be plenty of fish, and the size was generally good. My stringer included a 15" and a 14". The fish were picky and at times they would stop hitting entirely. Cracklebacks, large stonefly nymphs, and woolly buggers worked.
  8. Thanks Gavin. I knew gigging is prohibited from Montauk to Cedar Grove and thought that included snagging too, but it doesn't. btw - have you seen the Tan Vat hole lately? Not as much slack water as there used to be, seems like the hole has filled in with gravel. I wonder if this is temporary or if it periodically does that.
  9. BKB - a phone call to either the local agent, Montauk staff, or Operation Game Thief would be a good thing to do when you witness someone like that. Yesterday I stopped at Tan Vat after leaving Montauk and saw a family fishing in the hole in front of the parking lot. On the gravel between the man and his daughter was an open container of salman eggs. When I told him that he would get ticketed if an agent saw him he claimed he was told he could fish with them below the dam. I told him they meant below the dam within the park, and if he had looked at the big yellow sign behind him, he wold see "artificial lures only". They quickly picked up their stuff and left. Was he really that ignorant of where he was and what the regs are? Maybe, maybe not. I noticed he didn't even glance at the regulation signs when he left. I gave him them benefit of the doubt and didn't bother to report it, but if he had kept fishing, I would have made a call.
  10. I'm curious too - and envious if a royalex was bought for $400. The only 15' 8" that Old Town currently has is the Discovery 158, which is the 3 layer polyethlene, weighs in at about 80 lb. I have seen the 16' Penobscot and Camper models sell used for about $600. I would jump on one at $500 or less.
  11. SOLD - thanks for looking. Smokercraft 15 1/2' aluminum square stern canoe. Beat up, leaks, but it floats. I caulk the stern every couple years and it doesn't leak too bad. It was good enough to use on an overnight float last summer. $150 - send me a PM St. Louis
  12. Sent you a PM
  13. parking is $4 this year.
  14. I have seen exactly two(2) walleye upstream from Mill Rock in the last 35 years. But I don't fish for them , so they were accidental.
  15. No, you do not need the trout permit to fish the trophy management area unless you want to possess trout in that area. But you need it if you fish the park during the winter catch and release season.
  16. Cracklebacks - size 12 seemed to outfish 10s. We were at the park today and did ok. Best part of the day was the 7 bald eagles in the field between the road and the campground.
  17. The best way to learn is to go now; don't wait for the regular season to open. There are lots of fish in there for catch and release, and fewer fishermen.
  18. Never noticed the corn stalks. Why? I know a guy that slipped, floated through that riffle, down the river, almost to the next bend, but that's another story.
  19. Bman - I agree - last two trips to Cardiac this fall resulted in 0 fish. ...but, as watched some giggers floating down the river, they remarked that they were seeing trout. Assuming they can tell the difference between trout and other fish, seems like there are still some fish there, but they must have lock-jaw.
  20. My in-laws lived outside Salem, so when we visited for the weekends in the early '80s, I would drive to Montauk for the catch and release. One day, as I left the farm about 7:00 AM, it started to snow. By the time I got on 119 there was 4 inches on the road. Getting down the hill toward Pidgeon Creek wasn't bad, but the wheels started to spin going up the hill on the other side. Almost made it to the top before I went off into the ditch (on the hill side, not the cliff side, luckily). At that time, some guy lived in a trailer next to the creek at the bottom of the hill, so I decided to ask him if I could use a phone. The worst part of it wasn't the $50 towing fee, or the guy in the trailer calling me a dumbass, it was hearing the siren in the park going off as I trudged down the hill. Eventually got to park, and had a great day of fishing. Another day when I arrived at the park at 8:00, it was about 29 degrees and sleeting. I was the only fisherman there at the siren. The park employee who checked me in (in those days you had to purchase a no creel permit and present it at the office each day before you fished) said "you gotta be crazy!
  21. ...and it is catch and release. Put this number in your cell phone: Operation Game Thief 1-800-392-1111. Call it if you see poaching (it is a good bet that you will).
  22. Dovetail, That was probably not agent, just an MDC employee that conducts creel surveys. Nice guys to talk to, but they aren't authorized to do enforcement. Murdoc - good idea - I think I will do that and hope that others do it also.
  23. Dovetail - you are right about the need to report the violations. I have called OGT and the agent responded (too late - the jerks already left). But...it isn't like they are unaware of the problem. We talked to an agent at Maramec Springs this summer about poaching at Cardiac Hill. He didn't know where Cardiac Hill was. At another time this yearm an MDC rep was asked about increasing enforcement on the trout streams and his response was "trout already receive a disproportionate share of enforcement". Like you said, it comes down to a limited number of agents. It seems like enforcement has decreased in the last 10 years. I used to occasionally see, or be checked by agents in the trophy areas, but I haven't seen one in at least 10 years. And it is a good question as to weather there are more violations or if we are just more aware of them. Forums like this certainly certainly provide information we didn't have 20 years ago. And maybe I didn't notice the violators in the past like I do now that I'm a cranky old fart. But it sure seems as though people are bolder. "Do whatever you can get away with" seems to be the attitude.
  24. Nothing you said here surprises me - just a normal busy weekend at Maramec Springs. I see that kind of stuff EVERY time I am there. I was there Saturday too - but when we saw it was Derby Day we decided to not fish the park, and went to the trophy area outside the park. We saw the usual violations there too - a guy starting to put a sub 15 inch fish on a stringer until I "reminded" him about the regulation; another guy fishing with plastic. There was a posting on this forum a week or so ago from someone who said he was an MDC agent, who suggested the anglers report violations. That's fine, but I would be spending a good portion of my fishing time - every time I go - calling OGT and identifying poachers. Maybe if an agent stopped by the park one afternoon a week, he would have no trouble finding violations, and after a few tickets were written, word would get out that the rules should be followed.
  25. I fished Cardiac for a few hours last Thursday afternoon. Water was in great shape (it is going up today), but the three of us didn't get a bite. Tried cracklebacks, wooly buggers, caddis, prince nymphs, pine squirrel sculpins. In other words, top water, deep, and in between.
