keep in mind that this coming weekend is "Old Ironworks Days", with a $10 entry fee, even you are just fishing. I was there yesterday, caught a limit, but there were not many fish in there (not many fisherman either - which was great). Saw the usual poaching - A family with a bunch of kids kept limits for everyone in the family and left with a cooler a foot deep with cleaned trout. Someone complained to a park employee that the kids didn't really catch the fish, but since the employee didn't see it, he couldn't do much. Also saw a guy walking up from the river with a stringer full of sub-legal trout. Seems like it is ok to walk out of the park, catch up bunch, and then go back in.

Do what shawncat said, and if you want to cheat (not really), put on one of the those small styrophome bobbers, er, I mean "strike indicators" a couple feet up from the 1/100 white jig. Make sure you get a COMPLETE dead-drift and watch for any hesitation. Not really fly fishing, but very effective. Also, we've been doing really well with #12 yellow bodied cracklebacks at Maramec spring. Cast across and then use short (1 -2 inches), rapid strips.

Brooks-E - the closest, and one of the best places on the Current is Tan Vat access just below Montauk State Park. Follow the gravel road past the lodge and out of the park, you can't miss it. Further down the road, where the gravel turns to black top, is Baptist Camp Access, another good place. You can wade at either place. Be sure to read the regulations, as this it the Blue Ribbon area.

Welcome to the forum! A good way to learn to fly fish for trout is to fish the winter catch and release season in the trout parks. This normally opens in the beginning of November at both Maramec Springs and Montauk. Find someone who is catching fish and ask for advice. Most fisherman will gladly offer tips and even share flies with you.

Critique: Fly Tie Hooks
bikehikefish replied to Phil Lilley's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
Mustad 94840 for dries, 3906B for nymphs in sizes 12,14,16,18. Some other Mustad styles (don't remember the number) in size 10 for woolly buggers. Don't remember the brand of scud hooks in size 16 and 18 (whatever you had in your shop at the time Phil) I used to buy from Cabelas, but now I just pick up a box from my local fly shop - I like to buy 100 at a time. -
everybody send your money to me, and I'll go down there on Sept 5 and bid. Does anyone want to go with me so we can split the gas cost?

...not to mention the gigging

Even on the river, Paul would be somewhat famous.

I second Gavin's recommendation of the U city loop. The kids would love Fitz's burgers and root beer

He is talking about nylon sewing thread that you can buy at Walmart and other places. It is about 3/4 lb test, so set your drag real loose. I used to use it, buy now I think it is overkill and just use the 2 lb test.

FFM - thanks for the tip on the Yong's Special. What color thread to use on the Current this time of year? I was debating weather to drive down there this Saturday, this report may have made up my mind.
-
Not that it makes much difference, but I think the article was about a guy fishing the Gasconade, not the Meramec.
-
There may be catfish in that part of the river, but they are pretty hard to catch on flies and artificial lures. Remember that the regulation for the Meramec from highway 8 to Scott's Ford is flies and artificial lures when fishing for any species. Soft rubber bodied lures are specifically prohibited.

I waded the trophy trout area between Meramec Springs and Cardiac Hill last Thursday, and water levels are perfect for floating. But keep an eye on the levels as the previous poster suggested; a good rain can change things very fast.
-
Not sure if the trico hatches have started yet, but it is about the time of year for them to start. Fish them very early in the morning with very small trico imitations. Later in the day caddis can be productive. Otherwise go deep with weighted hare's ears, wooly buggers, prince nymphs, etc. Good luck!

Here I Am Asking A Noob Question About My Own Territory Lol
bikehikefish replied to polock's topic in Current River
I almost forgot -- pick up a copy of Oz Hawksley's "Missouri Ozark Waterways". Has mile by mile descriptions of all the rivers, with access points, points of interest, even good gravel bars on which to camp! Support your local fly shop or get one online http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=s...+missouri+ozark -
Here I Am Asking A Noob Question About My Own Territory Lol
bikehikefish replied to polock's topic in Current River
At the current river level, Tan Vat to Baptist is floatable; later this summer it may require dragging the canoe (if it ever stops raining). -
Much more than 400 cfs at Steelville is higher than I like to wade. A few weeks back we were at Cardiac when the level was 2.5 ft, and could not wade across.

Has Anyone Ever Fished At Simpson Park....in Valley Park?
bikehikefish replied to trizkid's topic in Meramec River
True, most waters and fish are contaminated to some extent. But this MDC pamphlet listed the amount of fish by species that they recommend we eat (or not). For most waters, they recommended not eating more than x amount of x species over x inches long. They stated specifically for Simpson lake not to eat any amount of any species. Anyone can have my share if they want it. -
Has Anyone Ever Fished At Simpson Park....in Valley Park?
bikehikefish replied to trizkid's topic in Meramec River
Seems like I remember seeing it in this years list of lakes where you are advised not to eat any of the fish (mercury, clordane, etc). I don't have the pamphlet anymore, but you can get it where you buy licenses. -
Fly Rods In Zone 3 At Bssp
bikehikefish replied to flyfishmaster's topic in Bennett Springs State Park
This sounds like a "grass is always greener" kind of thing. There is plenty of room in the park, let the bait slingers have their own area. I used to like fishing the fast water below whistle bridge with plastic worms; now I swing a soft hackle through the fast water in zone 2. Plenty of water for all. -
Yes, it can be spooky at night there, but I'm more worried about the 2 legged critters. The last time I night fished the Current, I left Salem about 3:00 AM and headed to Tan Vat the back way, driving past the Baptist Camp turn off. As I was driving down the hill toward Tan Vat, I came across a car half on and half off the road. Looked like he didn't make the turn, hit a tree, and there were car parts laying all over the place. I looked in the car, under the car, and all around the car, and couldn't find any anyone, dead or alive. So I went down to the access, fished a couple hours without success, then crawled into the car to get some sleep. But the whole time I layed there, I was waiting for the car wreck guy to show up. Kind of creepy. But - back to fishing - the best night fishing I had was just downstream from Baptist Camp. A black woolly bugger tricked about a half dozen decent browns just after dark.

Wanting To Canoe And Fish
bikehikefish replied to OzarkKid07's topic in Lodging, Camping, Kayaking and Caoneing
Not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but if you are going in May keep in mind that black bass (largemouth and smallmouth) season opens Memorial weekend, so it is catch and release until then. The middle Gasconade has beautiful high bluffs and the fishing can be great at that time of the year. But be ready to paddle, as between the sets of riffles are long slooooow pools. And jet boat traffic on weekends can be annoying, especially in the area of Vienna MO. But it is still my favorite river, for the mix of scenery, fishing and the chance to see lots of wildlife. Indian Ford canoe rental is located at Hwy 42 near Vienna and can shuttle you up to Belle Chute for a two day float, or even Jerome, if you want a longer float. Get a copy of Oz Hawksley's "Missouri Ozark Riverways" if it is still available. It has mile by mile descriptions of every Ozark river with maps and access descriptions. Worth its weight in gold. -
Fished The Burbouse Sunday October 21.
bikehikefish replied to Center Punch's topic in Wild Trout Creeks & Streams
Kayser, I've slept in those cabins on the north hill. From what I remember, there are 2 cabins and a trailer there. The cabins were just basic "river shacks". In the 70s a fraternity brother of mine from UMR bought the property and operated a canoe livery there - "Mill Rock Floats". For $9 a canoe he would take us up to the bridge at Hwy H and we would drag the canoe down the bridge embankment to the river and float back to Mill Rock. Once it took us 12 hours to float the 4 miles. We cut the float short when the beer ran out. After he got married and had a family he needed a "real" job, so he sold the place and moved to St. Louis. I still fish the area, sometimes with a kayak, a canoe, or john boat. -
We were there on Saturday, it wasn't very crowded. Those fish just under the surface hit small, light colored cracklebacks and #18 Griffith's Gnats. Sometimes they would come up for them on top (dry); other times I would sink and strip them. A real fast strip would sometimes get them excited. Landed about 15 and it was the best dry fly action I've ever had at Maramec. There was a pretty good hatch most of the afternoon - looked like small blue winged olives and some bigger brown caddis. Down in the the river outside the park pine squirrel sculpins fooled a few trout.
