They are raising them in the Tsimingo (sp?) hatchery for stocking in some Missouri waters that have the habitat--
there is great contoversy right now on unlimited harvest on the biggest gator gar with some states putting limits on them--- as the biggest fish are getting rarer--as far as eating, it is a high demand food fish now--last time I heard 6 bucks a pound--a big temptation to anyone to take as many as you can and sell the meat--in many ways like was done on spoonbill eggs here in the past, closest place I know is the lower white river--or the Arkansas river to get one--I would urge anyone if they take any 'gator gar --->harvest the smaller ones

Being a (don't laff) serious carp fisherman, I posted on another forum exact details on a good spot--only to find out later that the spot was pounded by bowfisherman--the fishing on that spot has never recoverd to what it once was--
if that can happen on carp, imagin what effect will have on bass, crappie, walleyes or Trout! --still share your info but only generally--then those that want to know specifics can ask via PM--that way the spots do not get overwhelmed or fished down to the point the hotspots no longer producing as it has in the past--
we ALL know of places like this--share with friends --those that catch and release or selective harvest--the spot will be just find--let the meat fisherman or game hoggs find it--then kiss it good by

I think you will find that $420 million addition is like adding a Las Vegas Style Casino's worth of Traffic, water quality degradition, and pressure on infrastructure--the amount of people traffic to justify that kind of investment is staggering
you can bet that pressure--fishing and boating will increase exponentally--but hey they can fish shoulder to shoulder at Roaring River just think how many they can get along the banks of Taney!--
fishing will prolly still be fine--but in some areas at sometimes atmosphere will be like fishing in a swiming pool full of jets skis with 50 people passing gas and spitting loogees at the same time--I can't imagin how much more trash alone it will generate---
you guys in Branson are at a point when you need to ask yourself when enough is enough. Some states on some waters limits the numbers of boats that can be on the water at any givin time--my bet is Taney will soon be just like one of those.

I never caught any red ears in Lamar until around 93-- the fishing is not as good for numbers of bluegills as it was in the 80's because of more pressure--but you catch more BIG bluegill
I think they have a seven inch size limit on panfish and a bag limit of 10 or 15 and that seems to be working

Bud, we will get together sometime this spring--as far as bushwacker--I have not fished it for several years--it used to have big BlueGills and some huge Hybrid sunfish--never remember catching red ears there
if I had to go south--Merrits Mill pond IN FLORIDA----its awsome used to fish there as a kid,... 2 pounders are common--I think the old record was from there--its managed for trophy redears--I think they must be 14 " before legal
--place to stay is at Arrowhead campground

WOW
hey guys these are all great redears. When is the best time to fish Lamar Lake for them and what are you using?
Usally start about the 1st moon phases in April/May---just after the bass are --which is early in lamar usally the first moon of March/April
I have caught some big fish in june but more earler--best bait red worms--leave the crawlers at home!

Here is a link on how to tie a hair rig--for trout use apropreate sized hooks and add a spring to the hair

Whats the purpose of the tripod set up, as opposed to a rod holder of some kind?
good question--
I use tripods because of rocks, use 2 of them because they won't feel tension with the rods horizontal----
I can un-screw the legs and use just the bank sticks--but in lots of places--no way to get them into the ground
I use the same set up trout fishing --but I use 9 foot ultra lights and okuma 15 baitrunners
in stead of a bolt rigs I use a running rig with a stop and hair rig a small spring and use powerbait--hooks them in the lips and will out fish most regular bait set ups for trout

MOCarp,
have you ever used a fly rod for those beasts? Would love to hook up with you sometime and do some flying for big carp
I have yet to try on a fly--That would be something I want to try--prolly need salmon sized gear a 9 wt?
I know a spot close to forsyth that I can get them in--shallow--wadeable and very clear--perfect for flyfishing for them
once this year in the heat of the day saw several cruising and picking up the little bits of chum--I would think it would be like bonefishing--shoot me a PM and we can hook up and try

Those are some nice ones. Looks kinda hi tech for my idea of fishing though. I know a couple of places where there are some really huge carp if you are interested.

You guys owe it to you to check this out what a blast!!! www.carpanglersgroup.com
The Carp Anglers Group was started in 1993 as a small newsletter with a circulation of 30 anglers. The (then) American Fishing Association published the first ad in their newsletter and the CAG was off to the races. Word of mouth and lots of help from EuroTackle and CarpSense helped sell the idea.
The February 1995 issue of the always progressive and open-minded In-Fisherman brought in several hundred members, as the article introduced carp fishing to many North Americans as a true sporting venture.
The Carp Anglers Group is especially strong in the Midwest and Eastern parts of the United States, with growing pockets in the Southwest. There is a Canadian component centered in Ontario and we have 25 members in Europe. CAG is recognized as the North American specimen club for carp by the Carp Society in England - a good start in just a few years and on no budget.
Now we are a non-profit organization led by a president, with state and provincial district chairperson volunteers. Our newsletter, The North American Carp Angler, is published quarterly and is filled with fishing tips, club news, big-fish reports, book and product reviews, etc. Our newsletter is evolving into the first magazine devoted to carp angling published in North America. We hold numerous regional events at sites around the USA and Canada each year and also sponsor a few national events, including the Chicago Carp Classic - the competition for the title of North American Carp Champion.
Another service we provide is a list of devoted carp fanatics, some of whom may live near you. We hope CAG members will teach each other about carp fishing and form local clubs to spread the word. Believe it or not, there are carp clubs all over the country that were formed for the singular purpose of catching old "bugle-mouth." It turns out that carp are a popular fish, but most anglers thought they were the only ones catching carp. We hope to change all that forever.
he not-for-profit organization registered as ‘Carp Anglers Group Ltd’ (also referred to as CAG) was established to pursue the following objectives:
A) To gain acceptance of the carp as an exciting and challenging sport-fish.
To become better carp anglers, assist others and encourage them to join us.
C) To treat the carp with respect, promote the release of trophy-size carp and encourage others to do the same.
D) To provide both members and non-members with the opportunity to meet, socialize and enjoy fishing for carp in a group atmosphere.

INHO a small fake slow sinking plastic corn works best --If you toss out some whole canned corn a head of them " they have special sling shots just for that sort of thing" just squeeze you plastc corn in the sweet corn juice and you set--its like stalking bonefish--its not easy but the sizziling runs are worth it
--I got mine in 2 places wacker baits and ACS if you go to www.carpanglersgroup.com there are links as well as a forum some there fly fish for carp--I tryed a 7 weight this summer and shelled it out on the 1st fish
you need to go after these guys like salt water quarry--I have heard of guys using a fly that looks like cottonwood seed duff and catching them on drys--wow! slurp-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt!
a small carp is 8 pounds and will test tackle better than any fish I know of in fresh water

Great place to euro fish for huge carp--nothing quite strips line of your reel like a 20# carp!!!
-
huge carp are available many well over 20 pounds yet few people know how to fish for these fish --many flyfisheman swear that they make runs like bone fish and the ones I have caught with the euro gear back this up--with smoking runs of over 50 yards!
the fish avg in the low teens to over 30# how often do we get to tangle with fish of that size on a rod and reel?
carp --big ones over 15# are not common in most waters--carp like the same water temps as brown trout and thats where they get biggest--Taney around powersite up to the trophy area has a fair population of big carp
you should give them a try--toss back the biggest ones " over 15#" and keep some of the small ones as they are great table fair smoked and that allows the big fish to get bigger
James River white bass
in Table Rock Lake

one of the best spots I know to fish for white bass early and is wadeable and very flyfishable --is baxter springs kansas--a low dam on the spring river has runs of whites and some small hybrids starting in mid/late feb--usally after the first warm rain--the water is very shallow rairly over 3 foot deep even with a rain--nice thing is lots of times you will have the place to yourself
