I'm going to try to get down to Empire tomorrow. I promised to take the cleaning lady Christmas shopping in the morning. I asked if I could do it on Friday instead, she said no, very firmly. Since she is also my cook and wife,.... is there anything I can pick up for you tomorrow while I'm shopping? LOL Were you fishing up in the coves at the dam or on the main body? What depth were you jigging when you found the brownies? I'll try to get out there in the afternoon. God Bless........D.C.

I received this from a friend and wanted to pass it on with a request for the guys & gals who are protecting us and our right to fish, pray or what ever we chose to do or be. A prayer I think is best heard in the middle of a stream or a log deep in the woods. You can see evidence of his presence all around you there.....its his creation. If you would say one for the soldiers, while in the stream, on a log or comfy in your home....they are the ones making it possible for us to be there: . The Night Before Christmas > >T'was the night before Christmas, >He lived all alone, >In a one bedroom house, >Made of plaster and stone. >I had come down the chimney, >With presents to give, >And to see just who, >In this home did live. > >I looked all about, >A strange sight I did see, >No tinsel, no presents, >Not even a tree. > >No stocking by the mantle, >Just boots filled with sand, >On the wall hung pictures, >Of far distant lands. > >With medals and badges, >Awards of all kinds, >A sober thought, >Came through my mind. > >For this house was different, >It was dark and dreary, >I found the home of a soldier, >Once I could see clearly. > >The soldier lay sleeping, >Silent, alone, >Curled up on the floor, >In this one bedroom home. > >The face was so gentle, >The room in such disorder, >Not how I pictured, >A U.S. soldier. > >Was this the hero, >Of whom I'd just read?, >Curled up on a poncho, >The floor for a bed? > >I realized the families, >That I saw this night, >Owed their lives to these soldiers, >Who were willing to fight. > >Soon round the world, >The children would play, >And grownups would celebrate, >A bright Christmas Day. > >They all enjoyed freedom, >Each month of the year, >Because of the soldiers, >Like the one lying here. > >I couldn't help wonder, >How many lay alone, >On a cold Christmas Eve, >In a land far from home. > >The very thought brought >A tear to my eye, >I dropped to my knees, >And started to cry. > >The soldier awakened, >And I heard a rough voice, >'Santa, don't cry. >This life is my choice. > >I fight for freedom, >I don't ask for more, >My life is my God, >My country, my corps.' > >The soldier rolled over, >And drifted to sleep, >I couldn't control it, >I continued to weep. > >I kept watch for hours, >So silent and still, >And we both shivered, >From the cold night's chill. > >I didn't want to leave, >On that cold, dark night, >This guardian of honor, >So willing to fight. > >Then the soldier rolled over, >With a voice, soft and pure, >Whispered, 'Carry on Santa, >It's Christmas Day, all is secure.' > >One look at my watch, >And I knew he was right, >'Merry Christmas my friend, >And to all a good night.' > >This poem was written by a peace keeping soldier stationed overseas. > Thanks & God Bless..... . Phil, I commend them for this stipulation. I have always had a rule that I do not loan my chainsaws, even to my kids. People have from time to time asked "Why". My kids even, will tell them, "Dad keeps his saws in top shape and he don't want blood all over them, especially of a good friend or family member!". As I deny the loan, I always tell them I would be more than happy to cut it for you if you will help & give me a hand. Yep, I would much rather cut it for them than them drop a tree on their house or kid or cut off their leg with my saw. Then too, I'm probably much easier on chains & bars and Particular about bar oil and fuel mixtures. Might make a few mad, but I don't have to clean blood out of the mechanisms. God Bless...D.C.

Looking for supplies and know how
Daddy Carp replied to MOBass's topic in Offer of assistance and aid
If you are looking for generators, ext. cords and other equip. to have on hand for the next emergency, check out EBAY. You can buy a 6.5 hp. 4500w/3500w NEW generator for around $475 dollars SHIPPED. they also have heavy power cords, but I like Thom's idea better. I believe I would use a 12/2 w/groung romax and a weather proof receptacle box. If You have a gas/propane furnace, a 3500w generator should tie in to the furnace power and drive both the fan and thermostat. Be sure to shut off the furnace power breaker in the ckt. brkr. box. That way if the power comes on it will not hurt your generator. There should be plenty of generator power to run a frez.and refrig. plus a couple of 60-75w lights. These Generators normally run about 8hrs. on a tank of fuel (3-4gal). It normally takes about 5-9 days for delivery. If you go thru the "bid" process rather than the "buy it now", you may get an even better deal. I would recommend using a credit card through Pay Pal for the safest transaction. Check your lanterns, many of the later models will burn coleman type (white gas) fuel or reg. gasoline. Be sure to check before trying gasoline. Another good sorce of emerg light is the oil burning lamps and lanterns. Many places carry the oils for these and in the summer, they work great on the patio with citranela oil to chase mosquitos away. The oil/kerosene lanterns are great fishing lights as they will not draw bugs as does a gas/mantel lantern. Hope this helps some, Winter is just starting again! God Bless.....D.C. -
Hey guy's, golly gee, thanks for all the super ideas. Rusty, if we can't get it uncovered with that machine, we'll loan the machine to Phil next year for deer season. If we can't get it uncovered, you blokes may want to drift down to Rockaway Beach area. They are looking for some new attractions. I will fill the tanks with gin & vermoth, stick some olives on her masts and set up a "Floating Martini" concession!! BYOS.....bring Your Own Straws!

I know we have had some snow, sleet and freezing rain here on Taneycomo area, but I still want to put in by Lilley's Landing and try for some of those trophy browns and bows. I've got a minor problem though....I'm not quite sure how to remove the cover off my boat without breaking something!! If maybe Phil, Leonard or Caddis could give me a hand, we could probably get her launched and fishing. I've put a link to a pic of the cover assembly that mignt help. Thanks Leonard, in advance, I know if its to go fishing, you'll find a solution. God Bless.....D.C.

Well, so far it went like I figured it would. The worst ice went up through Wichita,Ks. Manhattan/Topeka and on into Neb/Ia. I spoke with my kids about 1:00p today. They had about 1" of ice 30 mi. North of Topeka, power outage all over the state and cell-phone use almost shut down due to icing on the towers and power to the repeaters. They said that the next storm was just comming in and would take the same path. According to the weather service it would be more intense & severe. They are burrowed in & staying warm. Wish those people up there much luck, it could have been us with just a slight change of the winds!
-
Guess it may be headed this way in a big-way! It all depends on which way this next storm tracks. I talked to neighbors by my place on Pomme de Terre this afternoon. They said that Wheatland area on hwy 54 and Pittsburg on hwy 64 were without power for some time due to the ice storm. She said it was about 3/4 - 1" thick on trees & stuff. I just spoke with my daughter (30 mi. north of Topeka,Ks.) where my son-in-law serves as a PD dispatcher. They are preparing for a possible 2"-3" of ice tonight and tomorrow morning. At present, it is 31 deg. and dry up there. I guess yesterday's ice pretty much took the same path as last year's but a few miles wider. The storm over Olk, Tx & the southwest is the one to watch. It should be in the area after mid-night. May really slam us here in Branson area or go farther north and pretty well miss Springfield area. Either way, my dock on Pomme is gonna get it, got my fingers crossed!! God Bless...D.C.

Forgot to mention, Copperheads are most dangerous in spring when they are moulting(shedding). They lay along pathways or game trails waiting for prey as they are blind at that time. They will strike any movement nearby. So it's best to see them first! I have even seen them strike at limbs & weeds that move near them.
-
If I read this correctly by "Flyfishmaster", the movement of deer from other areas won't spread the disease as long as they don't come in here and start BITING OUT NATS. They shouldn't bite them any ways, they are way to small for much nourishment!! .............LOL God Bless, D.C.

I've fished the ozarks area for over 50 yrs. In all that time, I have only seen about 4-5 Cottonmouths all on Table Rock. I've not seen any, that I recall else where. I saw 1 about 15 yrs. back on Hillsdale lake in Kansas. Ya, the books say that's too far north too, but there he was and very agressive in the water. We lived in northeastern Ks. until July of this year. We had timber rattlers and copperheads on the place. Copperheads a-plenty, even though 1 is plenty enough for me. My grandson and granddaughter would hunt, catch and skin them to make hatbands. My daughter said we should leave them as they kill rodents. I explained to her that is the function of blacksnakes and DECON. Just before we moved, a copperhead bit my bird dog while he was in his kennel/run. His leg swelled up to about 3-4 times normal size. The Vet said not to worry as their bite is normally not fatal to dogs, but, a bite from a Rattler can kill a dog real fast. Go figure, Rattlers are less poisonous to people than copperheads. My nephew (30yrs. old) was bitten on the foot by a copperhead 4 years back. He was hospitalized, his leg turned almost black and swelled to about 4 times normal. He was very sick with a lot of pain throughout his leg. It took him several weeks of slow recovery. Yep!! Blacksnakes and Decon for me, the rest make nice looking hat bands! LOL God Bless, D.C.

Ya, it's just like the zebra muscles, the disease or pestulance starts in one small area. Normally it is detected & pointed out. Sometimes it is carried and spread by people who are unaware of the problem. Usually, it is spread by air-headed idiots who are too selfish to clean their equipments, disenfect or wash them. Animal diseases are often carried in the carcus of out-of-state game when the hide & wastes are disposed of during home or local processing. I would like to see a law (national) requiring all big game be processed in the state it was shot and any rack, mounts or hides disenfected & tagged as such before permited to enter the state. There will be a fast enough spread of diseases by the animals themselves without out help. We just can't control them, they don't pay attention. Of all the special places we have set up just for them, and even marked & labled each "DEER CROSSING" They just don't read or don't obey cause they still cross where they darn well please. They should have a ticket or something! LOL Your tight Thom, it's a serious problem & gets worse every year. D.C.

Hey, Gov. Guys, you all did fantastic in tracking the calf of a cow that lived in the USA for several years after being born in Canada. Now our MDC guys are intercepting "undocumented elk" at the borders. The Law-Type dummies can't seem to intercept thousands of illegal aliens at the borders or even find them later. Maybe we should hire the MDC guys out & pay them a bounty. Might get results faster!! LMAO & rollin! Have a good one, D.C. http://mdc.mo.gov/cgi-bin/news/news_search...196444900,96635,

Well Hoover, I made it down to Pomme. Between a very sick little dog and the cold weather, all I could do was look out at the lake. I got the place winterized in case we don't get our usual warm-weather Dec. this year. Oh well, that many more in there for next spring. Yep, I sure am! Definitely a fair-weather-fisherman...LOL

Sounds like you had a good & enjoyable time just getting out & fishing together. "The destination migh be poor, but the journey is priceless!" Bad day fishing beats a good day at the office. What part of the lake were you on? What part are you planning on fishing this summer? I'm new to the lake but I am told there are some Killer walleye in there and the white bass will almost jump in your boat when they're running. Best of luck to you & your's. Hope to see you on the lake. D.C.

Stand back Geezer and give me a little room. I got a couple new reels I picked up that I want to give a try. If you've ever seen me with a baitcaster that I'm not used to......you know why to stand way back. LOL LOL . I picked up a couple reels on EBAY, a Pinnacle "TARA", of which I have several, and a Pfluger "Citerion". The Pinnacles I love and are probably my favorites. The Pfluger reels have appealed to me for some time and I've always wanted to try them, just never would part with the coins. This ones like new in/out, all lubed up with "hot sauce" & ready to go. I've got a whole $8.65 in it (including shipping). I couldn't believe I got it so cheap. When it arrived & I disassembled it to check & lube, it was like new with very little signs of use. The TARA was about twice that amt. which is still very cheap. . I'll be up the few days after Thanksgiving. Geezer, if your out & about, I'll be mostly in Deckers Branch (cedar cove area) or on the pomme side just around the corner (upstream) from Deckers. Just look for that old maroon/wht. Maxum converted bow-rider. Leave a few in there for me! D.C.

Hey guys, thanks a bunch for all the info & inputs. I'm gonna give them a good try. I think I finally got my old motor lined out now. The other day she seemed to idle just like she used too---slow & steady......YEA! May ya safely be in Heaven, 'afore the devil knows your gone! D.C.

Hey Thom! No wonder I couldn't catch very many. They were all down there following you!!! LOL Ya, it looked like you were pretty busy & in the middle of a project when I was there. Enjoyed meeting you and will look forward to the time when we can share a few fish stories. I spent most of the time that day just playing around with some hard baits. Slow, but a few. If you would, carry a couple rocks with you when you go out fishing. From time to time, throw one in the water. That will scare a couple, of all those fish swarming around you, over to us....LOL. Have a good one! D.C.

I know there are some real impressive large-mouth bass in Taneycomo. Does anyone have any info on small-mouth/spotted bass in Taney? I know they are in Table Rock and Bull Shoals in good size & numbers. This being the old White river I figured they are probably in Taney also. Any inputs or suggestions? May ya safely be in heaven, 'fore the devil knows yor gone!! D.C.

I went to the Fall Creek area this afternoon to fish & check out the lake in that area. I stopped in at Fall Creek Marina and then at Lilley's. I was lucky enough to meet 3 guys from the area who are definitely PROs. I enjoyed the meeting & conversation very much and truly apreciate them taking the time to pass along a few good pointers. I felt almost like a kid who went to watch a basketball game and ended up meeting the Globetrotters! lol I fished for about 3 hours below Fall Creek trolling & casting. Not too bad for my 1st in that area. I was throwing several lures & spinners I've not used for a longtime, along with a couple of stand-bys. Had some follows and 3 hook-ups. 1 for dinner and 2 went back for next time. Hits on a blue/grey, bluefox inline with white tail. The best hits & follows was on (yes Leonard, the same) a cross between a stickbait & a diver. This is a brown crawfish pattern that I least expected rainbows to dive on. For some reason, they do. Guess these didn't read the book....LOL For a Dummy to the area, not a bad day. Hope that as I get smarter on the fish up there I can catch more of them......My next re-learn is going to be when I blow about 10yrs. dust off my Fly stuff & tying bench. BEST OF LUCK TODAY & BETTER LUCK TOMORROW.............D.C.

No need to apologize!!! I was going to (after reading the stepfather's story)suggest, that a few of us good-ole-boys, invite him to tag along on the hunt. I think we could have found her and saved a lot of time after a "heart-to-heart" discussion with him. The "nice, upstanding" citizenry won't employ efficient methods in cases like this. Where innocent kids & lives are at stake........I can and would! Guess that's why some call me a crude A-hole. Yepper!, I resemble that! My heart & sympathy goes out to the ones who truly loved that little girl. At this point, that excludes the mother as she knew the guy she brought home, or should have. Certainly, before she would leave her daughter in his care. No excuse, Stupidity don't exist if decisions are made on true love. Besides, she was at work. If she was smart enough to find her way there & back home.....she was smart enough to know better than to leave her daughter. She was just a horny ole gal who put herself first, ahead of her child. I better sign off, these kind of happenings really put me in "kill" mode.

TRY LINX.......... I lived in K.C.area for many years, mostly on the southwest area. We would see a Linx from time to time in the Gardner/Olathe area, out in the county. They are big! with a bobbed tail and appearance of a bobcat except bigger with ear-tufs very visable (ling hair on points of ears). Could have been what they reported on as a wildcat, mountain lion. Regardles, wouldn't want either on sharing my tent!! LOL

10 1/2 ft. JON...... If it is very wide & deep, it may hold a 10hp. I'm assuming it is a standard jon that one man can carry. My many years of experience would recommend the following: 10'-12' stay with an electric with the battery in the front.-- 12' go with a 3.5 to 5hp, a 7.5 if you are very experienced boater and swimmer. -- 14' go with a 5hp to 10hp and put the gas tank in the front or center. Always check the certification tag for approved weight and max. horsepower rating on the particular boat. There are many variables such as beam width, depth, hull material and construction that will dictate the actual safe hp you can use. What I have given is a "rule-of-thumb" for a light-weight utility Jon boat. A "V" bottom hull design can normally handle a little larger motor.....One big factor to consider is the weight of the motor(it will be entirely on one end of the boat) and the load you will carry. When you sit in the back with a "tiller-steered" motor, you don't want the nose so high in the air that the first breeze will flip your rig & wet your wig, LOL. Hope this helps and gives you a good basis of info to start with.
