Alaska, Is It In Your Budget
Micheal Kyle replied to Bill Babler's topic in General Angling Discussion
I have a couple of questions What River system, town is this located near or in. Do we fly to Anchorage then drive or fly out and if we fly out who do we fly out with. This info would be nice so that I may check airline price for myself and my wife. Michael -
Yes it is a long trail though. You would be better if the water is running to drive down the road in Point Royal. The road belongs to Branson and they cant keep people out. I do know that they were trying to buy the road from Branson so you might check be for you do this.( check with city of Branson PR will tell you they own it) they used to try and keep me out then I found this info out about 3 years ago. I then would park down there when the water is on. If the water is off I will park a top and fish fish my way down. Michael

It would not be fishing for me if that did not happen. Thats why I bought that Clackacraft you can fit just about anything in it you need, Flies, rods, reels, difffrent fly lines, leaders, tippets , strike indicators, shot, fly floatant, exta waders, food, grill, about the only thing it is needs is a full time guide. Thom I hope that the water is good and fishable and you and your family have a good time. Michael

With those numbers it could be real close. Oh boy legal chuming I can't wait

Yes but that would go against what the book says. What would we do then?

Why would it

Like I said it will probally happen earlier this due to the colder weather earlier. The Lake turned over a couple off weeks ago according to the charts. when the lake turns over it is due to the top water coloum reaching cold enough water temp which will make that water heavier than the water beneath it, when that happens the lake turns over. Thus making the DO levels greater PPM and thats how you can tell when it happens by looking at the charts. (In a normal year) It takes a lot longer period of colder weather to drive the shad down deep and slow their metabolism down so that they are barely able to move. Which in turn when the generators are turned on they get sucked in and cut up. For the past couple of years we have had very warm winter and that is why it has happened so late the lake turn over that is. So again thats why I think that the major shad kill will happen eariler this year. So yes it could happen in a couple of weeks, this major cold front will help even more to make it earlier. Plus that is why the shad kills have not been very good either because we have not had the long periods of cold weather after the lake has turned over.

The shad kills around here usally do not happen untill mid January to Febuary. There might be some shad comming through but I do not think that it has been cold enogh for long enough period. I bet though with this extreme cold front that it will help out. I also think with this colder weather that we have been seeing this year that it might just happen a little early this year. The past winters around here have been very warm and we just have not had some good shad kills. Not saying that it has not happen in the past couple of years just not as good as I have seen when it is bone chilling for a long period of time. I cant wait though I love fishing the kills it makes for some great fishing, if you can be in the right spot at the right time, I like to match that hatch Michael

Duck hunting was awesome 2 setups and 2 limits of Mallards you shold have came over Duane. Jess had a great time aswell I know he had an itch that got scratched 9 times yesterday. Oh boy cant wait untill Monday. with the cold front it should be another good day. Hey does anybody know where the all geese went Jeremy and I could not find a leagal goose to shoot. We actually drove the boat from Forsyth to KOA no legal geese. I told him maybe they know we have shot guns and not bread(LOL) You better come out and play on Monday Duane.

About 3 years ago a lady in the KC area hit a Mountain Lion, it took the MDC about a week to finaly admit that it was a Mountain Lion. Befor my wife and I bought them Fly shop I managed a ranch out in Kansas he owned about 2000 acres which was down in Prescot, Kansas. If you dirve over to Hume, Mo. take 39 west on the curve where the state boundary sign is take a right that is state line road. He owns all to the left the acerage is all strip pits there were more holes than useable land, he just keeps it for the hunting and fishing. We actually had a Kansas wildlife biologist that lived near the property and he had told my brother and myself to be carefull while hunting on this land that there where big cats on the property. We then were always on the look out never saw them untill we actually stayed over night and sat on a deer carcus. There was no question what it was the tail was alomost as long as the cat and the cat itself had to be aleast 5 feet long adn stood about 30-36 inches tall. If the cats are that close to Missouri they are in Missouri, I think they have a range of about 50 miles I'm not sure though I will have to check on it. I will say this too a lot of people will mistake a Bobcat for a mountain lion as you can see from Gary's pic which BTW great pic of a bobcat. From the distance they do look a little alike. This Bobcat does not hardley have any spots if he does have spots they make the hide look darker at a distance. Plus with the tail tucked under it could be mistaken. Remember the reason it is called a bobcat because of the tail, no tail at all. Alot of the time the Bobcats and Big cats when they see you they will run off not giving you enough time to properly id the animal. Michael

On Taneycomo and on the White I use a fly under the bead like a wooly bugger. I also sale them in my shop. When using it up in Alaska, New York, Pennsylvania, and up in Michigan with the chuck and duck system (using the lead and shooting line). It takes some skill to differeniate between the bottom and a fish. I do not resent you for your comment heck I do not even know who you are, thats why we live in the good old USA so we can say and think what we want and not get in trouble. As a guide when everything eles has failed you, it sure is nice to have an ace up your sleave. My job as guide is to make sure my client catches fish and has a great time. It is a last resort in my boat and sometimes it is a diffrence between a goose egg and a smile. Michael
-
I have used them and fish them just like a regular egg pattern the only difference is that the egg is pegged above the hook. I do not fish them the same as I do in Alaska. In Alaska we use heavy lead with a shotting line here I use a Floating line just as you would fish a regular egg under an indicator. I like the mottled roe the best. Michael

I thought secrets were the trick, the lake is only 26 miles long cant be too may spots since you cant hunt up from KOA and from 65- Roark creek. that makes it only about 22 miles long. Great I bet you might figure out where the spot is now. My dad hooked a goose at night about 9-10 years ago, that was fun. It was a very foggy night and the goose just swam right over his muddler. I told dad there was an easier way to get a piece of jewelry.
-
Yes they have been killing a lot of ducks on the lower lake, I just got back from the doctor and he said I can go. I hope that there will be 12 ducks and 4 geese in the bottom of my boat when we leave on Friday. I have a little secret spot to go it should be a good day. Michael

You would be watching that which one do you want to dance with(LOL) I like Brook Burke Those are some nice smallies Do you think you could catch those on a fly rod sounds like you are using spinning gear just wandering why with all the small mouth flies out there. One that comes to mind is the Ozark Spider in Black and Blue. If you want to next time your up here stop in and I will give you a couple. I have about 1 month left then I think I might be released from the doctor so That I can start fishing again, I am starting to get a little cabin fever I even went to Deer camp just to be able to get out. I just ended up sitting by the camp fire all weekend But I did keep the gun Loaded just in case. I have one more procedure on Monday and I hope that will be it. Keep up the good work Leonard and keep catching those nice fish. Michael
