  1. As most of you know we bought a trip to King Salmon, Alaska and sold it out of the shop, all I have to say is what a trip. We bought another week and will be selling it again next year it will be the week of Sept 20 after reading this any interested parties call me and we can hook you up on a rainbow trip of a lifetime. The people that went with us this year were Steve Jensen, Gary Kyle, Bob Mccoy, Rob Reid, Charles McCracken, Duane Dotty, Steve Brigman,Kristina who is my wife and myself. As the plain touched down in King Salmon, I was thinking after reading an article of a man that had tried for 5 years to hit the 30 inch mark on rainbows that it would be great if one person in our group could land a 30 incher. We would start the week at King Ko Inn the only hotel in town that my wife would said she would stay in. The other one in town is like a dorm room. Before moving to Naknek River Camp. The accommodations are not a 5 star hotel but like I kept telling my wife this is a fishing camp who needs running water and a flushable toilets. After the bear speech and a wonderful lunch we headed out in pursuit of the grand daddy of all, the infamous 30 incher. As we headed for the shock and awe of bear country I could feel the increasingly huge pain in my leg no it was nothing just my wife’s fingernails, just the thought of fishing where bears were made her cringe. As we parked the boat at Brooks Camp in Katmi Natinal Park and Jim was saying hurry up here comes one you don’t ask you just steadily walk faster. I was shocked how many bears there were in one area. By the end of the day no 30 incher but we did have a fun day avoiding bears and catching Sockeye Salmon. The Next three days we would spend on the world famous Naknek river, all I have to say is I think this was the best three days of my life what a river system. If you can picture the white three times wider with 8 units on and you are trying to wade. Not to rough but it is very wide shallow in some areas and deep in other areas and probably has a current speed of 3-4 mph. When we arrived at the first spot Jim Johnson took Kristina and my dad and placed them in an area with eggs and beads I told him I was not interested in fishing that way, only way I wanted to fish was with streamers and sinking lines. Jim response was when you are ready to catch fish just holler and I will get you rigged up. Well about three hours went by, Kristina and my dad are putting up some numbers, I am still with a giant goose egg. I switched and on maybe the 2nd or 3rd cast I hooked a fish that would eventually lead me down river ½ mile and start shock and awe of big, no huge, no giant Rainbows. The fish was 31 inches and weighed in at 14 lbs. After catching this fish all the stress was off and the flood gates opened for us. We fished the Naknek for 3 days straight and landed several Rainbows in the 8-10lb range those fish would measure any where from 26-28 inches there where a few 29 inchers caught that would weigh in at 12 lbs. I think that everyone on the trip trip had at least one bow that was 26 inches. By the end of the week we would end up with 10 fish over 30 inches with Kristina catching the biggest it was 33 inches and was 16lbs. One thing that I loved about the trip is that you are going to catch a lot of different species of fish we caught Dolly's, Grayling, Arctic Char, Sockeye and Rainbows. You can catch the Rainbows, Grayling and Arctic Char with out having to move around. I am not for sure but I think that my wife also caught the largest Arctic Char it weighed right at 5 pounds. Margo was blown out the day that we went back to fish for big Arctic Char so we ended up going over to Brooks. The Johnson Family are wonderful people they now what it takes to get you on huge fish and huge numbers of fish. Like I said before it is not a 5 star hotel but like Jim will tell you the fish do not care how you smell. Phyllis is a wonderful cook if you leave for the day hungry or go to bed hungry it is your own fault. I would like to personally take this time a thank Phil for his help and gratitude he put forth to help my dad and Steve the day we all went back to Brooks. Steve and Dad did not handle the boat ride well the first day so they stayed behind to fish the Naknek and Dad got his biggest fish with Phil. Then he also helped my wife with her big fish my wife had injured her ankle with a very bad sprain which ended up being a hair line fracture on the first day. The four of us went up to fish a new area and my Dad and myself got out of the boat and Phil and Kristina stayed in boat went down about 3 hundred yards and anchored not long after that I could see they had a big fish on and the anchor was coming up, that was the 33 incher, with no net. Thank you again Phil. James who is their son which I believe is 14 is going to be one hell of a guide when he gets older. He was very calm cool and collective around the bears and is very knowledgeable when it comes time to catch fish that are around the bears. James we will be bringing duck calls and shot guns with us next year but just one day, or maybe every night after we get done fishing. Good Job James. Sorry it took me so long to post but with just 2 days between getting home from Alaska and then down to the conclave I just did not have the time. Phil has posted most of the pics from the trip so I will not post any. Ok maybe one pic I was very proud and glad to have Kristina catch the big fish. Michael

  5. I can't wait I think of it like Christams for a child. Great fish I hope we have that good luck as well
  6. I have cast and fished the line and absolutely love the line, I was a little skeptical of the price at $100.00 but I do truly believe it is the line of the future. It cast very well and with the way the line is made it seemed to me to have less resistance on the water which made picking up several feet of line off the water even easier. I will warren everyone that it does make noise as it travels though the guides and does feel rough to the touch. Means nothing though. S/A is revealing this out at the show this weekend in Denver. I should have a sample of it next week in the store for people to see and be able to cast. Michael
  7. Keep you posted who do you think I am and oh two peas in a pod we have decided that there is no room for a threesom.(LOL) We leave on the 21 and come back on the 30. There is a drift boat seminar by Ken Richards let me know, You probally have enough practice by now though, if you want to be in on it 50 Bucks. We will be fishing every night That is Thursday Friday and Saturday after the auction. Where's my Trout Slayer. Michael
  8. I will be down all three nights, it will be my last week that I will get to fish down there untill mid October.
  9. Not sure why this did not post the other day but here it is again. After helping my wife get the garage sale cleaned up and taking her and the girls out to dinner. We went fishing, we did not get down there until 11:30 and fished until 5am. We saw and talked to Don what a great and funny man man. Russ met up with us and headed up to the cable to start. Duane started out pretty good catching fish right off the start, so did Matt and Jeremy. Not so good of a start for me I think it took me about one hour to get hit then about 10 more minutes to catch my first fish. I asked Duane how many he had and he said 9, you sure are kicking my butt tonight I said. I decided it was time for the secret weapon an Olive Slump Buster and a White Mylar Zonker tied about 24 inches apart. I stated picking up fish and playing catch up. By the end of the night we had worked our way down to the point. I was starting to get wore out and could barely keep my eyes open as I was stripping and catching a few. I did catch a few on a Mohair Leech down at the point Electric Blue was the color. When we got back down to the truck after inspecting the the new ladder which they had water coming through and it even had a few fish in it, we told how many each of us caught. I came in at 18, Duane came in at 19, and Matt came in at 22 (way to go for his second time of night fishing the right way) LOL. Not for sure how many Jeremy and Russ caught because they left early. Michael
  10. Like I said befor nice fish, If you are to work the formula (G2)*length/800 19*19*23=8303/800=10.37lbs That is the formula that we used when I worked at MDC Great fish Michael

  14. Very good 4am6am the fishing really kicks in to high gear plus most of the traffic that is there early on has left and some of the spots that are good to fish will be empty. Micahel
  15. Not sure you might have to come and check it out Thats the beauty of a garage sale you never know what will be there. Early bird will always get the worm at one of these things.
  16. I will have to say after the week I had last week I did some much deserved fishing with my friends. We started Friday night and fished every night, yes I finally got to go four 4 nights in a row. I even was able to get my wife down on the water Sunday night and my dad went with me on Monday night. I fished every stretch of water known to man down at Taney fished Friday all the way down at Fall Creek up to the cable what a night. The fishing was actually kind of slow down below but once we all got up past the rebar the fishing really picked up. With moon high and bright the selection of colors started out with Olive then went to white not hardly moving it at all. I was actually fishing both of the colors at the same time Olive on top white on the bottom and was catching fish on both for a while then the bite went mostly to the white. After making a plea barging with my wife some thing about if you let me go tonight I will not fish Taney until we get back from Alaska, she agreed as you will see that did not last long. Got down there about 7 and stood around in the parking lot until about 9 just talking to everybody that was coming through. We finally got down to the water down by Koa it stared off with a bang. Then it just died no fish I started casting everything to then known to mankind in the fly fishing world. We all headed up top again BAM there they were just waiting to be brought so we could get our fix. After a little mishap of deciding I would take a bath in the middle of the night and catching my self be for I made the plunge and ripping my waders, Duane and I made it up to the cable, I made it for about 2 more hours with my waders full of water. I did talk to a buddy after wards that had caught a nice 23 inch Brown. OK day three, after working with my wife all day getting things ready for a Garage sale this next weekend at the house and yes it will be Saturday all day and there will some fly fishing stuff out of the shop there enough for the ad. I got a phone call from Duane asking if we were going to make it down I said yes let me check. I bribed my wife with Mexican food down at the Landing she was all in, all we had to do was find a baby sitter. Hello grandparents do you want to spoil our children tonight while we fish they couldn't say no to that. We got down to the water at about 10:30 and fished until 2 it was awsome started the night on the north bank and when the south bank cleared out we made our way over again fishing white and olive sculpins. My wife and 12 fish I was proud of her because she does not get to go as often as I do. I also told her that was good practice before we went on the big trip. Well this brings me to night 4 we started out at around 8:30 and it was hot for some and not so hot for others. About 11 I got asked how many fish I Had I responded with the number 3 yes I only 3 fish I explained to Duane I asked him how many you have he said 16. He then went on to tell me I was not stripping fast enough I told him I was burning it in. He asked what flies I had on. I told him I only had one waited black sculpin on. Thats the problem put a non-weighted one on I don't have any. Well to make a long story short he gave me one and then it was on. I was the come back kid. We did have one thing happen at about midnight we both hooked a fish almost at the same time. He said I have a good fish I responded well fight him fare. Then my fish made a nice little run and I thought to myself my fish is nice too. Well to sum it up I netted my fish then netted Duane's fish both fish were identical both were 21" Browns. We quit fishing around 1 when we got to the parking lot my dad was sitting on the back of the truck with Matt I asked him how they did and Dad proceeded to tell what they were doing and since I do not have enough time in this century to replay what he said I will just sum it up for you. White bunny leech, dead drifting basically not moving it all and they both combined to have over 60 fish. Duane and myself were casting an unweighted black sculpin and trailing with a weighted black sculpin were burning it back to us and combined to have right at 50 fish. Sometime it just des not matter if it is on it will be good no mater waht you cast at them. As you can see the night fishing has been good I have been seeing a lot of nice fish being caught and for the most part it does not matter what you through at them in the past week at night I have caught fish on big hoppers and mice during the full moon, Muddlers when they would start to midge. Mohair leeches and pine squirrel sculpins in black and olive. It was great week of fishing. here is a pic of the 2 browns that we both caught last night.
  17. Nice Fish You need to go out and buy the Penatx Optio WPI it is waterproof and takes great photos at night. You have seen soem of the pics from night with it. I think it sells for around 200 now. Michael
  18. Pr is down stream about 1.5-2 miles below rebar. Here is how it is mapped out Cable, outlet 1, old boat ramp, outlet 2, rebar, point, then the big hole, rocking chair hole, new boat ramp, koa, then point royal. all of this will cover right at 2.5-3 miles of water. Foam is fine . Maps are at delomre.com I hope this will help Michael
  19. We have been fishing pretty hard the last couple of nights and his produced several fish. Believe it or not I actually fished with a lighted indicator for the first time in a long time. Monday night they ran water all night so yes I had two marsupial scuds tied on and caught a bunch of fish. Few 12-14 inches and a few 18-20 inches. I get pretty bored doing this so I quit in time to watch the full lunar eclipse, and what a sight it was. On Tuesday night they shut the water off and it was on, we started up by outlet one and worked our way up to the cable then back down and ended the night down at KOA. I was surprised that when we got down to the KOA area there were actually some people fishing down there. It was very hot down at KOA between the three of us we had 40 fish in about 1 hour. For the night between the three of us we had probally 70 fish. Flies used last night no secrets here, bunny leech's, Pine Squirrel and the Slump Buster. Olive and blacks were working the best. Fish them real slow up top then down at the KOA fish were picking them up on the swing. It has been a great two days and I plan on being back down tonight. Michal
  20. Rich, I have no comment except that is funny. That's is right no new fly and or no secret fly oh yea I almost forgot no secret place to fish any more.
  21. You have to love the bunny leech! It is always a big producer at Taney.
  22. Glad to here you had fun. I cant wait untill the 21 of September.
  23. After looking into my crysatl ball and determining that they were going to shut the water off at 9:30 we headed down about 9. Since the MDC was down on Monday night we stayed above the rebar. In my oppinion I think that the shocking of fish makes them a little sluggish for a few days after. Nick and I started between outlet one and two in on the flat and and worked our way up to the cable then back. We had a great night I brought 34 fish to hand and had over 50 fish on. Nick was not so fortunate, being this was his first time this year down there he had a little trouble with hookups. He would finally get his first one then it was on. He said that he had 16 and had probally 25 fish on the one that would count would come at about 1am. It was a pig a nice 23inch Brown. For needing to go home at midnight the both of us were glad we had no idea what time it was. As we left there were a couple of guys that were in the parking lot that said it was 2:15 Nick basically ran to the truck and that was it no more of the one more cast. We cought most of our fish on some new two toned bunny leeches and mohair leeches. The colors that worked last night were a huge range from purple to white. Michael
  24. This is the great wizard I say here me now If they shock it will be after dark. Thats how they have always done it in the past. And yes it is getting thats time of year. Most of the time the charts and graphs are right I would say If we can get cooler weather down south In Texas and Louisiana they will start to shut it off on more of a regular basis. Right now they have to run during the peak usage time. Ah yes The magic pee you have all figured it out please keep it a secret and the wizard shall grant you all a wish. Terry I will start with you Please tell me what you want! I want a full time DJ under the pavilion so I may listen to music while I fish. Granted Duane what would you like to have? I would love to have some candy with the music. Ah yes some Candy. Granted! Brian what would you like to have? Time to come down and play with my new friends. Granted, you shall a weekend pass from now until she says you cant come and play. Don what do you want? I want everything just mentioned Granted! Ah yes it shall be. I have created the greatest place to fish it will be called TST Taneycomo Striper's for Trout, It will now be the new honey hole. Good luck and do not forget all the fun will still happen down in the water. Michael
  25. Brian Just let me know when And I can get you set up.
